THE DOON PROMISE

August 2019

Welcome onboard Harwant Sir !

It's been a month and a half since the whirlwind that is Harwant, picked up the reins of education consultant at Aasraa.
Managing expectations is important in life, so as not to overreach and face disappointment... equally important is to not pitch too low. But sometimes you get it just right. And that is what Harwant is, just right. He is a motivator; a motivator of children, of coordinators, of project leaders and management. Aasraa has always pushed boundaries, worked hard, been ambitious for the projection of our children. Today however, we have the whirlwind who is Harwant breathing renewed life, purpose and new systems into Aasraa. We are grateful and now, even more ambitious for our children.

GOVT SCHOOL INTERVENTION PROGRAMME

Aasraa started its official Government School Intervention Program, SQEP, with a sample selection of 6 primary and upper primary schools. SQEP, stands for School Quality Enhancement Program. This has included infrastructure development, computer, science and language labs, teacher training, additional teachers and updated pedagogy. Since April 1st, we have mainstreamed 350 children and impacted 350 more children already enrolled in these very under resourced government schools. The Hans Foundation and Fundacion Heres have stepped in to fund this ground breaking program. What has been extraordinary has been the cooperation of the government school teachers. They are delighted with the new learning systems and resources. The children are responding strongly and in conjunction with our afterschool program, the sky is the limit of what they can achieve!

SPECIAL NEEDS CENTER

Though an inclusive organization that started with normal and special needs street and slum children 10 years ago, we noticed an increasing number of children who are unable to cope with studies in a natural classroom environment.  After a formal assessment at Indresh Hospital these children have been diagnosed with having various forms of learning disorders requiring attention by trained facilitators.

The current status of inclusive education does not meet the special needs of these children. Hence, we launched our Special Needs Center in 2019 where after successful evaluation an IEP (Individual Education Program) is developed and with regular classes/sessions with the child, we hope to see a marked difference in the overall behaviour of the child.
