The Official Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Fansite is incredibly honoured to have touched base with Jimmy Nail AKA Leonard Jeffrey ‘Oz’ Osborne to bring fans an exclusive three-part Q&A newsletter special!

Jimmy Nail played ‘Oz’; the unforgettable brash, loud mouthed, opinionated loose cannon with an endearing vulnerable side to absolute perfection. Fans of the show warmed to his character's humour immediately following his opening scene with Dennis and Neville on a ferry crossing the Channel; destination Germany, Dusseldorf.

It is well documented; at 28 years of age at the time and with zero acting experience, Jimmy attended a casting session in Newcastle upon Tyne for a new television series to be made by Central Television. His somewhat unconventional interview would ultimately catapult him to overnight stardom.

It’s no secret; Jimmy was blessed with some of the finest script writing ever penned by legendary writers Ian La Frenais, Dick Clement and Stan Hey. Oz’s one-liners, wit and put-downs have since become cemented in Auf Wiedersehen Pet folklore.

For the first time in 22 years, Jimmy answers our AWP questions about his time on and off the set. Over the coming months, we’ll reveal his answers to questions we’ve received from you via the Official Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Fansite and social media platforms!

In the first of our three-part exclusive, we find out how he felt when first setting foot on the ‘BECO Building Site’ film set as a novice actor with a leading role that would soon make him an instant household name.

We ask Jimmy what, if anything, he would change about his performance throughout Series 1 and 2 as a ‘young Oz’ and how on earth he sustained that substantial bruise as seen during the opening scenes of series, 1 episode 11, ‘The Lovers’.

We spoke of his recollection of his characters first encounter with Big Baz (AKA John Strachan / Ying Tong John) in episode 2, ‘Return of the Seven Pt 2’ when one aggressive head-butt knocks Baz clean to the floor with such conviction fans are left feeling his pain.

We finally put to bed that recurring rumour of a missing scene involving Oz pouring a pint of beer over a chap in The Cross Keys bar following an altercation with his stool and we discuss his character's passion for Country & Western music and what, if any influence he had on his tremendous rendition of ‘I Can’t be Myself’ by the late great Merle Haggard as featured in series 2, Episode 6, ‘Cowboys’.

And lastly, we asked that timeless burning question! As a staunch Newcastle United fan both on and off screen, how did he feel about a storyline that would take his character out of the claustrophobic confines of ‘Hut B’ along with Dennis, to offer rivals Sunderland FC a little support against Liege in series 1, Episode 3, ‘The Girls They Left Behind’.

And so, it began and the team were off! We rewind to November 1983 and take a look inside the TV Times with an increase of 1p to 28p per issue! This edition not only featured the first ever TV Listing for Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Episode 1, 'If I Were A Carpenter', but included three fantastic pages of behind-the-scenes pictures and interviews with the cast and crew.

This would be our first taste of 'The Magnificent Seven', and boy were we in for a ride! 13 weeks of unadulterated brilliance that has stood the test of time - even if it was set on a building site in Düsseldorf! Take a look back at how it all started.
