The True Story Behind the Events on 9/11 that Inspired Broadway’s Smash Hit Musical Come from Away, Featuring All New Material from the Author
When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill.
As the passengers stepped from the airplanes, exhausted, hungry and distraught after being held on board for nearly 24 hours while security checked all of the baggage, they were greeted with a feast prepared by the townspeople. Local bus drivers who had been on strike came off the picket lines to transport the passengers to the various shelters set up in local schools and churches. Linens and toiletries were bought and donated. A middle school provided showers, as well as access to computers, email, and televisions, allowing the passengers to stay in touch with family and follow the news.
Over the course of those four days, many of the passengers developed friendships with Gander residents that they expect to last a lifetime. As a show of thanks, scholarship funds for the children of Gander have been formed and donations have been made to provide new computers for the schools. This book recounts the inspiring story of the residents of Gander, Canada, whose acts of kindness have touched the lives of thousands of people and been an example of humanity and goodwill.

“As lyrical as it is chilling, as astonishing as it is empathic, Our Missing Hearts arguably achieves literary perfection.” —Booklist (starred review)
From the number one bestselling author of Little Fires Everywhere, a deeply suspenseful and heartrending novel about the unbreakable love between a mother and child in a society consumed by fear
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. Bird knows to not ask too many questions, stand out too much, or stray too far. For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic—including the work of Bird’s mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet who left the family when he was nine years old. Bird has grown up disavowing his mother and her poems; he doesn’t know her work or what happened to her, and he knows he shouldn’t wonder. But when he receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, he is pulled into a quest to find her. His journey will take him back to the many folktales she poured into his head as a child, through the ranks of an underground network of librarians, into the lives of the children who have been taken, and finally to New York City, where a new act of defiance may be the beginning of much-needed change. Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. It’s a story about the power—and limitations—of art to create change, the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact.

A soul-stirring novel about what we choose to keep from our past and what we choose to leave behind, from the New York Times bestselling author of Wish You Were Here and the bestselling author of She's Not There
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can trust him completely. . . . Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in Ash, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her. Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves.

The gripping new Jack Reacher thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling authors Lee Child and Andrew Child
“No Plan B is not to be missed. A perfectly plotted, fast-paced thriller, with bigger twists than ever before. It’s no wonder Jack Reacher is everyone’s favorite rebel hero.”—Karin Slaughter
In Gerrardsville, Colorado, a woman dies under the wheels of a moving bus. The death is ruled a suicide. But Jack Reacher saw what really happened: A man in a gray hoodie and jeans, moving stealthily, pushed the victim to her demise—before swiftly grabbing the dead woman’s purse and strolling away.
When another homicide is ruled an accident, Reacher knows this is no coincidence. With a killer on the loose, Reacher has no time to waste to track down those responsible.
But Reacher is unaware that these crimes are part of something much larger and more far-reaching: an arsonist out for revenge, a foster kid on the run, a cabal of powerful people involved in a secret conspiracy with many moving parts. There is no room for error, but they make a grave one. They don’t consider Reacher a threat. “There’s too much at stake to start running from shadows.” But Reacher isn’t a shadow. He is flesh and blood. And relentless when it comes to making things right.
For when the threat is Reacher, there is No Plan B.

Fiction Addiction's Featured Reader: Mazey Eddings, Romance Author
We're excited to be implementing a new segment in our monthly newsletter: Fiction Addiction's Featured Reader! Everyone has a story behind the books that mean the most to them, and we want to tell yours. Want to be featured? Reply to this email and let us know, and you might see yourself in an upcoming newsletter!
Don't miss our upcoming book talk and signing with Mazey on October 1st!
What was your favorite childhood read and why?
I was obsessed with the Junie B. Jones series as a kid! It was so special to grow up with a main character so unapologetically herself. As a teen, I fell deep down the Twilight rabbit hole… pretty loca of me, right? (That’s a very cringey and niche Twilight reference I’ll probably regret adding here as soon as I hit send).
Do you have a go-to comfort book that you’ve read over and over?
Tessa Dare’s historical romances all feel like a great big hug, and I find myself thumbing through the novels at least once a week. In particular, The Duchess Deal holds a special place in my heart—it mixes razor sharp wit, an incredibly melodramatic hero, and endless tenderness about learning to love yourself and be loved by others. It’s also absolutely hilarious.
Why do you love reading?
As someone with ADHD and autism, the real world can often feel like a lot, but reading allows me to live a thousand different lives in the most comfortable way possible. Characters become friends and a way to understand human nature on a nuanced level. There’s nothing quite like diving head first into a story and walking beside the characters!
What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year?
This is a truly impossible question!!!! One that I can’t stop thinking about, even though it’s been months since I finished it is How to Fake it in Hollywood by Ava Wilder. It’s poignant and clever and truly hits you right in the feels! I also got the chance to read her second book (releasing 2023 #authorperks) and it’s just as amazing as the first.
What’s on your nightstand right now?
It’s a bit alarming how many books I have precariously stacked on my nightstand! Right on top is Bi: The Hidden Culture, History, and Science of Bisexuality by Dr. Julia Shaw. It’s such an affirming and fascinating read on bisexuality and an examination on the bi experience that I’ve been craving for years!

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of What If? and How To answers more of the weirdest questions you never thought to ask
The millions of people around the world who read and loved What If? still have questions, and those questions are getting stranger. Thank goodness xkcd creator Randall Munroe is here to help. Planning to ride a fire pole from the Moon back to Earth? The hardest part is sticking the landing. Hoping to cool the atmosphere by opening everyone’s freezer door at the same time? Maybe it’s time for a brief introduction to thermodynamics. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade, built a billion-story building, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on a geyser as it erupted? Okay, if you insist.
Before you go on a cosmic road trip, feed the residents of New York City to a T. rex, or fill every church with bananas, be sure to consult this practical guide for impractical ideas. Unfazed by absurdity, Munroe consults the latest research on everything from swing-set physics to airliner catapult–design to answer his readers’ questions, clearly and concisely, with illuminating and occasionally terrifying illustrations. As he consistently demonstrates, you can learn a lot from examining how the world might work in very specific extreme circumstances.

9/20/22 - Random House - $28.00
From Pulitzer Prize–winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Strout comes a poignant, pitch-perfect novel about a divorced couple stuck together during lockdown—and the love, loss, despair, and hope that animate us even as the world seems to be falling apart.
With her trademark spare, crystalline prose—a voice infused with “intimate, fragile, desperate humanness” (The Washington Post)—Elizabeth Strout turns her exquisitely tuned eye to the inner workings of the human heart, following the indomitable heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton through the early days of the pandemic.
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea.
Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire. At the heart of this story are the deep human connections that unite us even when we’re apart—the pain of a beloved daughter’s suffering, the emptiness that comes from the death of a loved one, the promise of a new friendship, and the comfort of an old, enduring love.

As a little girl raised amid the hardships of Michigan's Copper Country, Fenna Vos learned to focus on her own survival. Ultimately, controlling her surroundings and eluding traps of every kind helps her keep a lingering trauma at bay.

9/27/22 - Scribner - $20.00
From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of All the Light We Cannot See, comes the instant New York Times bestseller that is a “wildly inventive, a humane and uplifting book for adults that’s infused with the magic of childhood reading experiences” (The New York Times Book Review).
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of recent times, Cloud Cuckoo Land is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope, and a book.
In the 15th century, an orphan named Anna lives inside the formidable walls of Constantinople. She learns to read, and in this ancient city, famous for its libraries, she finds what might be the last copy of a centuries-old book, the story of Aethon, who longs to be turned into a bird so that he can fly to a utopian paradise in the sky. Outside the walls is Omeir, a village boy, conscripted with his beloved oxen into the army that will lay siege to the city. His path and Anna’s will cross.
In the present day, in a library in Idaho, octogenarian Zeno rehearses children in a play adaptation of Aethon’s story, preserved against all odds through centuries. Tucked among the library shelves is a bomb, planted by a troubled, idealistic teenager, Seymour. This is another siege.
And in a not-so-distant future, on the interstellar ship Argos, Konstance is alone in a vault, copying on scraps of sacking the story of Aethon, told to her by her father.
Anna, Omeir, Seymour, Zeno, and Konstance are dreamers and outsiders whose lives are gloriously intertwined. Doerr’s dazzling imagination transports us to worlds so dramatic and immersive that we forget, for a time, our own.

9/6/21 - Scribner - $32.50
Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.
Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.
King’s storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy—and his dog—must lead the battle.
Early in the Pandemic, King asked himself: “What could you write that would make you happy?”
“As if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be asked, I saw a vast deserted city—deserted but alive. I saw the empty streets, the haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying overturned in the street. I saw smashed statues (of what I didn’t know, but I eventually found out). I saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so high their tips pierced the clouds. Those images released the story I wanted to tell.”

What do mystery writers do to relax? Solve a murder mystery, of course! Have a great time with this busman’s holiday of a novel. Enjoy how it wraps in upon itself as the author of the book you are reading is ALSO a character. The Enigma of Room 622 by Swiss author Joël Dicker typewriter taps us into his world full of mystery novel tropes, nods and genuine love for the genre.
“Dicker salutes Agatha Christie even as he drops the reader through one trapdoor into another, so that by the end, we doubt we’ve ever read another novel quite like it. (We haven’t.) Fans of Ruth Ware and Lucy Foley will hug this book in between chapters; the many readers who love Anthony Horowitz’s mysteries will celebrate. And me? I’ll be reading it again.”—A. J. Finn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window
A burnt-out writer’s retreat at a fancy Swiss hotel is interrupted by a murder mystery in this metafictional, meticulously crafted whodunit from the New York Times bestselling author of The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair.
A writer named Joël, Switzerland’s most prominent novelist, flees to the Hôtel de Verbier, a luxury resort in the Swiss Alps. Disheartened over a recent breakup and his longtime publisher’s death, Joël hopes to rest. However, his plans quickly go awry. It all starts with a seemingly innocuous detail: at the Verbier, there is no room 622.
Before long, Joël and fellow guest Scarlett uncover a long-unsolved murder that transpired in the hotel's room 622. The attendant circumstances: the succession of Switzerland’s largest private bank, a mysterious counterintelligence operation called P-30, and a most disreputable sabotage of hotel hospitality. A European phenomenon, The Enigma of Room 622 is a matryoshka doll of intrigue–as precise as a Swiss watch–and Dicker’s most diabolically addictive thriller yet.

Country music icon, army veteran, father, outdoorsman—Craig Morgan shares all aspects of his life, revealing stories even his most avid fans don’t know.
In 1989, as US news outlets declared an end to Operation Just Cause, Craig Morgan was part of an elite group of military operatives jumping into the jungle along the Panamanian border on a covert operation. Fans know the country music star from his hit songs and acclaimed albums, but there’s a lot more to him—a soldier who worked with the CIA in Panama, an undercover agent who fought sex traffickers in Thailand, and a dedicated family man who lives the values he sings.
Craig details these many facets of his life and more in God, Family, Country. An on-stage appearance with his father’s band at age ten may have planted the seeds for life as a country star, but first he trained as a paratrooper in the army. After earning numerous distinctions, his path to sergeant major was all but assured. Then came a momentous decision: he left the active military to pursue music.
With unwavering support from his wife and a pack of part-time jobs, he toughed out the lean years and achieved his first success with the poignant ballad “Almost Home.” Other hits soon followed, from party songs like “Redneck Yacht Club” to the soul-rending “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost.” Born from the anguish of his son Jerry’s passing, the song’s tribute has consoled and inspired millions across the world.
Duty to country has been a constant throughout his life and globe-spanning career. In 2006, as “That’s What I Love about Sunday” topped country radio charts, Craig was riding in a convoy of Humvees in Iraq. An avid outdoorsman, a former sheriff’s deputy who’s still a member of the auxiliary, and always a husband and father first, Craig Morgan will inspire you with his life lived by the deepest values: God, family, country.

An extraordinary, untold story of the Second World War in the vein of Unbroken and The Boys in the Boat, from the author of Friday Night Lights and Three Nights in August.
When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, college football was at the height of its popularity. As the nation geared up for total war, one branch of the service dominated the aspirations of college football stars: the United States Marine Corps. Which is why, on Christmas Eve of 1944, when the 4th and 29th Marine regiments found themselves in the middle of the Pacific Ocean training for what would be the bloodiest battle of the war – the invasion of Okinawa—their ranks included one of the greatest pools of football talent ever assembled: Former All Americans, captains from Wisconsin and Brown and Notre Dame, and nearly twenty men who were either drafted or would ultimately play in the NFL.
When the trash-talking between the 4th and 29th over who had the better football team reached a fever pitch, it was decided: The two regiments would play each other in a football game as close to the real thing as you could get in the dirt and coral of Guadalcanal. The bruising and bloody game that followed became known as “The Mosquito Bowl.”
Within a matter of months, 15 of the 65 players in “The Mosquito Bowl” would be killed at Okinawa, by far the largest number of American athletes ever to die in a single battle. The Mosquito Bowl is the story of these brave and beautiful young men, those who survived and those who did not. It is the story of the families and the landscape that shaped them. It is a story of a far more innocent time in both college athletics and the life of the country, and of the loss of that innocence.
Writing with the style and rigor that won him a Pulitzer Prize and have made several of his books modern classics, Buzz Bissinger takes us from the playing fields of America’s campuses where boys played at being Marines, to the final time they were allowed to still be boys on that field of dirt and coral, to the darkest and deadliest days that followed at Okinawa.

9/20/22 - Harper Paperbacks - $18.99
New York Times bestselling author and journalist Anderson Cooper teams with New York Times bestselling historian and novelist Katherine Howe to chronicle the rise and fall of a legendary American dynasty—his mother’s family, the Vanderbilts.
One of the Washington Post's Notable Works of Nonfiction of 2021
When eleven-year-old Cornelius Vanderbilt began to work on his father’s small boat ferrying supplies in New York Harbor at the beginning of the nineteenth century, no one could have imagined that one day he would, through ruthlessness, cunning, and a pathological desire for money, build two empires—one in shipping and another in railroads—that would make him the richest man in America. His staggering fortune was fought over by his heirs after his death in 1877, sowing familial discord that would never fully heal. Though his son Billy doubled the money left by “the Commodore,” subsequent generations competed to find new and ever more extraordinary ways of spending it. By 2018, when the last Vanderbilt was forced out of The Breakers—the seventy-room summer estate in Newport, Rhode Island, that Cornelius’s grandson and namesake had built—the family would have been unrecognizable to the tycoon who started it all.
Now, the Commodore’s great-great-great-grandson Anderson Cooper, joins with historian Katherine Howe to explore the story of his legendary family and their outsized influence. Cooper and Howe breathe life into the ancestors who built the family’s empire, basked in the Commodore’s wealth, hosted lavish galas, and became synonymous with unfettered American capitalism and high society. Moving from the hardscrabble wharves of old Manhattan to the lavish drawing rooms of Gilded Age Fifth Avenue, from the ornate summer palaces of Newport to the courts of Europe, and all the way to modern-day New York, Cooper and Howe wryly recount the triumphs and tragedies of an American dynasty unlike any other.
Written with a unique insider’s viewpoint, this is a rollicking, quintessentially American history as remarkable as the family it so vividly captures.

A suspenseful and atmospheric horror set in 1980s Oregon, perfect for fans of Stranger Things, Neil Gaiman, and Margaret Peterson Haddix, from New York Times bestselling author and the Decemberists’ lead singer/songwriter Colin Meloy.
Maybe Archie Coomes has been watching too many horror movies.
All of a sudden, the most ordinary things have taken on a sinister edge: a penny on a doormat. A man in a brown suit under a streetlamp. The persistent sound of an ax chopping in the middle of the night.
He keeps telling himself that this is Seaham, a sleepy seaside town where nothing ever happens. Or at least nothing did, until his dad’s construction company opened up the cliff beneath the old—some say cursed—Langdon place.
Soon, though, he and his friends can’t deny it: more and more of the adults in town are acting strangely. An ancient, long-buried evil has been unleashed upon the community, and it’s up to the kids to stop it before it’s too late. . . .

Level Up by Stacey Abrams & Lara Hodgson
|
|
I was surprised to learn that Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Lara Hodgson have been small business partners through 15 years and three different small businesses. Their story, which exemplifies the trials and tribulations of small businesses throughout this country, should be required reading for everyone, but most especially for anyone about to start or buy a small business. The authors are clear-eyed about the systemic obstacles small businesses face, while at the same time inspired to solve them. In the meantime they give great advice for navigating the current system. I greatly admire their resilience and fortitude.

Psychological horror is an apt description and not surprising since the author is the host of the popular true crime podcast Morbid, and has a job as an autopsy tech. Using New Orleans with its swamps, bayous and ancient cemeteries as the setting just adds to this compulsive and unputdownable read about a savage and sadistic serial killer and the woman who desperately wants him caught.

Do yourself a favor and find out what happens when four sixty-year-old women retire from a clandestine government backed agency (clandestine because they are assassins) go on a company sponsored retirement cruise only to find out the agency they have worked at for forty years has ordered a hit on them. James Bond on steroids - or should I say hormones?

Back to the Garden by Laurie R. King
|
|
A beautiful mansion and gardens in Northern CA that was once a commune in the early seventies is one of the main characters in this police procedural in which Detective Raquel Laing is trying to link bones just unearthed when a statue is moved to the serial killer known as the Highwayman. Dual timelines take you back and forth between the hippie days of San Francisco and the present time where the estate is now part of a public trust and opened to visitors daily. A terrific mystery featuring a complicated and dedicated detective who doesn't play by the rules because she cares too much about her victims' families.

Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian
|
|
Just the premise of Never Saw Me Coming should get anyone who loves real psychological thrillers to start reading. What could be more intriguing than a psychological experiment that brings 7 diagnosed young psychopaths together on a college campus? Each character has their own story to tell - and sometimes they even tell the truth. When 2 members of the program are found murdered three others kind of band together (psychopaths aren't very trusting of others) to try and find out who is killing their group before they perhaps fall victim. I am not sure how Kurian had me rooting for known psychopaths to not get hurt, but I was sure hoping they would find the killer before anyone else got hurt.

The Marsh Queen by Virginia Hartman

|
The Marsh Queen is a beautifully written, slow paced novel about family and love and hidden secrets with a mystery and lots of tension thrown in. The descriptions of the birds and the Florida marshes help make this an atmospheric novel that you won't want to miss.

Alias Emma by Ava Glass
|
|
Newly minted British secret agent Emma Makepiece has 12 hours to convince a young doctor (the son of a Russian nuclear physicist who gave Russian secrets to the British) that his life is in danger. For some reason, after years of living peacefully in London friends and colleagues of his mother are being killed and the British are sure that she is the real target and that they will use Michael to get to her. What ensues is a 12-hour run through London – literally, they ran for most of the book – through a city with more CTV cameras than anywhere in the world and a city where the software for facial recognition from these cameras has been hacked. Of course, there is always a back story, and the reason the Russian’s are now targeting these people and the background of Emma, Michael and Emma’s mentor R. are what makes the novel so interesting. I can’t wait to read more of Emma’s adventures.

The Vicious Circle by Katherine St. John
|
|
When you are young and vulnerable, have poor self-esteem, and circumstances have left you with little or no options, the promises and the peace and contentment offered by a spiritual wellness center like Xanadu become just too hard to resist. Pretty soon you are part of the vicious circle which brainwashes you into believing all that the charismatic leader is telling you. When Sveta finds out her beloved, but estranged uncle, has died and left her millions, including his very remote wellness center in an isolated Mexican jungle she has no choice but to go there to attend his funeral. Of course, Xanadu is not as it seems nor are all of the members. It is up to Sveta to try and figure out who she can trust and what she can do to hopefully save the members from a Jonestown type ending. Lies, and omissions from her mother, her uncle's lawyer (who she once had a one-night stand with) and from her uncle's wife, who is now the self-proclaimed head of Xanadu, make this a high stakes quest for the truth, with twists and turns around every bend of the isolated jungle.

I love the faster pacing of books written for a younger audience (middle grade and young adult), but will try just about anything fiction, especially if it has some romance. I also have a soft spot for really special picture books.

Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake by Mazey Eddings
|
|
Don't miss our upcoming book talk and signing with the author on October 1st!
Lizzie struggles to manage her ADHD, and it shows. What she doesn't have a problem with, though, is managing her romantic relationships, mostly because she doesn't have them. One night is plenty to scratch any itches she has. And that works perfectly for Rake (yes, he's heard all the romance jokes), who is also not interested in relationships and is about to return home to Australia anyway. But after two nights, they both can't stop thinking about each other...and then Lizzie finds out she's pregnant, and Rake moves to the U.S. to be a part of his child's (and Lizzie's) life. Learning to live with each other is something neither of them wants to do...but maybe if they can figure out why they're so reluctant to make attachments, they might be able to make another exception for each other. Lizzie is such a fun character, and I loved rooting for her in all of her pursuits.

Defend the Dawn by Brigid Kemmerer
|
|
Tessa and Prince Corrick are back! King Harristan wants desperately to hold his kingdom together, but it seems almost like a lost cause, as tensions with the rebels simmer, and the consuls are unwilling to budge in regards to providing more medicine to the people. When a representative shows up from a neighboring kingdom they'd written off, Corrick and Tessa volunteer to accompany him to make a trade agreement that both kingdoms desperately need. But no one trusts each other, and everyone is looking for secrets, and eventually those secrets turn dangerous. A heart-pounding sequel that you won't be able to put down, with characters you won't know whether to root for or against, and with all of Kemmerer's trademark intrigue and action.

A Merry Little Meet Cute by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone
|
|
Bee (aka Bianca von Honey) is a very successful plus-size adult film star who is trying to branch out into the kinds of acting jobs she's always wanted. Nolan was the naughty one in boy band Ink back in the day and is now trying to rehab his image to better provide for his mom and sister. They meet on the set of a Hope Channel Christmas movie, where Bee has to hide her career, and they've both been warned to keep it in their pants -- something they both fail spectacularly at, since Bee's had a crush on Nolan since his Ink days, and Nolan has been following and fantasizing about Bianca von Honey for years. But when they catch real feelings for each other at the same time an unscrupulous reporter starts sniffing around for dirt on Nolan, things get complicated. A hilarious, laugh-out-loud, delightfully sex-positive rom-com.

The Boys by Ron Howard & Clint Howard
|
|
The Boys is the best memoir I've read in 2021. Ron and Clint Howard's story of their show business childhoods is mesmerizing. The brothers share in alternating sections about their work with legends such as Henry Fonda, John Wayne, and George Lucas, as well as their zany antics on set. But the real stars of the book are their parents, whose calm guidance and strong example led the boys to find fulfilling lives. A great holiday gift for the classic TV and movie lover in your life.

Her Final Confession by Lisa Regan
|
|
Lisa Regan grabs you from the first page of this book and does not let go. If you read the Josie Quinn series this plot will be a huge surprise. The book can stand alone, you get background, but is most appreciated as a series installment. Josie is very respectful of privacy and protecting your past. That ends up being a serious disadvantage when a body is discovered in a deputies driveway. The push and pull as a friend versus detective is very strong in this book. Limits are constantly tested. The plot is very unexpected and has many twists and turns. Any suspense fan will appreciate this book.

Last Girl Ghosted by Lisa Unger
|
|
This is a frightening story about the ways technology can expose us to situations we cannot imagine. Everyone has secrets, some more shocking than others, what if someone knew all your secrets? What if they decided to take advantage of all the things they knew about you? What if they met your every need and desire? Then what if they disappeared? This story explores all these horrors in elaborate and completely realistic detail. I could not put it down when I started. Lisa Unger has written one of her best books, don't miss it!

Disney Princess: Beyond the Tiara: The Stories. The Influence. The Legacy. by Emily Zemler
|
|
For generations, we have been entertained and shaped by the masterfully created animated films of Walt Disney. For so many people, the most important of these films are those of the Disney Princesses. We know their names, we follow their stories, and you have probably had one of their songs stuck in your head from time to time. But do we know all of the inspirations and dedication that it took to create this troupe of Princesses? In Emily Zemler's new book, Disney Princess: Beyond the Tiara, the reader has an opportunity to dive deep into the creation of these beautiful films that have stood as role models, fashion icons, and best friends to many children and adults through out the years. But Disney Princess: Beyond the Tiara goes even deeper to show how these films affect our lives outside of the movies themselves, wether it be a spin off novel that becomes a New York Times best seller, a wedding dress that inspires a bride to be their own princess, or a television series that keeps up on your toes to the bitter end. Finally, it discusses the girl power affect that the Disney Princesses have given to us. Every Disney Princess has left us with a life lesson: From self awareness and acceptance of who we are, the grace, power, and fortitude to stand up against oppression and hardships, or the simple gifts of kindness and a gentle spirit.

The Anime Chef Cookbook: 75 Iconic Dishes from Your Favorite Anime by Nadine Estero
|
|
For anyone who has ever watched a Studio Ghibli film, and any genre of Anime, you will know that passion for food is one of the essentials of this art. For many of us, the response to the beautifully drawn dishes and the sense of awe and euphoria that over takes the characters is: HOW DO YOU MAKE THIS AMAZING FOOD?!?!?!? Well, thanks to Nadine Estero that question has finally been answered. The Anime Chef Cookbook is filled with delicious recipes that are easy to follow and created delicious dishes. In addition to the details of how to create these dishes, each recipe gives detailed information regarding which show or movie and episode that the recipe was inspired by. I highly recommend the After Practice Nikuman with its savory filling wrapped in the thin steamed dough, and the Ohagai rice balls with the chewy outer layer of glutinous rice and the rich creamy filling of bean paste.
