To know that HTI’s vision is to be the catalyst (literally and figuratively) for organizational and individual transformation seems massive, but so doable. And it all starts with 3 actionable steps:
Building Community - One of the most important things we do is build community. If you know HTI, you know how important it is for us to support teams through community-building exercises that help them establish trust and get to know each other better.
To effect change among people, structures, and systems we have to start with building community. It’s amazing that we can work side-by-side with people for 5, 10, or even 15 years of our lives and never know the names of each other’s children or where we grew up. We show up in community every day and often forget to establish true community. Why is that?
We had a proud partner moment recently at a leadership meeting when a Wallace team member opened the meeting with a community builder.
We have had the opportunity to work with the Wallace Foundation over the last two years to support leaders of youth arts programming. During this time the Wallace team has come to view the value, intentionality, and varied measures for building community. Community builders are now the norm!
The team has a deep appreciation and recognition of thoughtfully holding space, lifting up voices, and creating environments for meaningful conversation/connection and productivity. It's great to see transformation in practice.
YOUR SONG COMMUNITY BUILDER
Here's a simple community builder you can use the next time you start a meeting or convene a group.
Ask participants to share a song that describes their day so far, their personality, or their year. This is a fun way to learn more about people's personalities, the day they had, and what type of music they listen to and enjoy! You can also make playlists from the songs for future use in that community. People love hearing their favorite tunes!
MEET THE WALLACE FOUNDATION FACILITATION TEAM
SuRa FoMa is a group of passionate facilitators and youth-development professionals that know the value of thoughtful collaboration. In March of 2019, the group teamed up to pursue a project that brought excitement – the facilitation of the Youth Arts Initiative Learning Community in June of 2019 in Chicago, in partnership with The Wallace Foundation and Boys & Girls Club of America.
As the group prepped for their interview experience and thought about their roles, they had an ah-ha moment of just what they were building, a quintet of facilitators, each bringing a style and skillset uniquely their own that builds a stronger collective. And that is how the group became the SuRa FoMa Collective. Each one has a role (or instruments) to play.
Starting Tuesday, June 9th (12:00 PM - 2:00 PM EST)
