Welcome to your Mead Way newsletter

Thank you for signing up to this Mead Way newsletter. It will provide key updates on the improvement scheme and details of any road closures and diversions which may affect you, your staff or your customers.

From February, this newsletter will be issued monthly to update you on progress but if you'd like any more information, you can find this on our website or by contacting the team.

Why are we doing this work?

Mead Way connects residential areas of North and West Swindon with major employment areas and the town centre. Since the road was constructed in the 1980s, the area around Mead Way has expanded and so has the amount of traffic.

We understand that queuing at the Meads roundabout can be a problem, particularly during the afternoon rush hour and Westmead roundabout is currently working beyond capacity and subsequently not performing as originally designed.

What improvements are being made?

Approximately £4 million is being invested to improve the capacity of the road and to help resolve some of the current issues.

  • An additional lane will be built going northbound from Meads roundabout (on Great Western Way by the Mini garage) to Withymead roundabout (by Simply Gym and Kidz About)
  • Mead Way will be resurfaced between Meads and Withymead roundabouts
  • The roundabout at Westmead Drive and Stonehill Green junction will be converted into a signalised crossroad junction with a toucan crossing for pedestrians to cross Westmead Drive
  • As part of the widening, we will also be improving some of the safety features above the subway
  • Street furniture will be replaced and street lighting will be upgraded to be more energy efficient. A replacement bus shelter will also be incorporated

When is the work starting?

Due to essential gas works taking place at Bridge End Road early in the New Year, the start date of the Mead Way improvement works has been moved. This is to avoid major delays occurring on the road network.

We anticipate the contractor will begin the main construction work at the beginning of March 2020, with the scheme due for completion in Autumn 2020.
