November 4th is the 100th Anniversary of the Discovery of King Tut's Tomb |
|
|
|
11/1/22 - St. Martin's Press - $29.99
Two celebrated Egyptologists bring to vivid life the intriguing and controversial reign of King Tut's parents.
Akhenaten has been the subject of radically different, even contradictory, biographies. The king has achieved fame as the world's first individual and the first monotheist, but others have seen him as an incestuous tyrant who nearly ruined the kingdom he ruled. The gold funerary mask of his son Tutankhamun and the painted bust of his wife Nefertiti are the most recognizable artifacts from all of ancient Egypt. But who are Akhenaten and Nefertiti? And what can we actually say about rulers who lived more than three thousand years ago?
November 2022 marks the centennial of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and although "King Tut" is a household name, his nine-year rule pales in comparison to the revolutionary reign of his parents. Akhenaten and Nefertiti became gods on earth by transforming Egyptian solar worship, innovating in art and urban design, and merging religion and politics in ways never attempted before.
Combining fascinating scholarship, detective suspense, and adventurous thrills, Egypt's Golden Coupleis a journey through excavations, museums, hieroglyphic texts, and stunning artifacts. From clue to clue, renowned Egyptologists John and Colleen Darnell reconstruct an otherwise untold story of the magnificent reign of Akhenaten and Nefertiti.

9/7/21 - William Morrow - $16.99
Lady Evelyn Herbert was the daughter of the Earl of Carnarvon, brought up in stunning Highclere Castle. Popular and pretty, she seemed destined for a prestigious marriage, but she had other ideas. Instead, she left behind the world of society balls and chaperones to travel to the Egyptian desert, where she hoped to become a lady archaeologist, working alongside her father and Howard Carter in the hunt for an undisturbed tomb.
In November 1922, their dreams came true when they discovered the burial place of Tutankhamun, packed full of gold and unimaginable riches, and she was the first person to crawl inside for three thousand years. She called it the “greatest moment” of her life—but soon afterwards everything changed, with a string of tragedies that left her world a darker, sadder place.
Newspapers claimed it was “the curse of Tutankhamun,” but Howard Carter said no rational person would entertain such nonsense. Yet fifty years later, when an Egyptian academic came asking questions about what really happened in the tomb, it unleashed a new chain of events that seemed to threaten the happiness Eve had finally found.

2/21/23 - Grand Central Publishing - $29.00
From celebrated New York Times bestselling author, Steve Berry, comes the latest Cotton Malone adventure, in which the discovery of a lost historical document challenges the global might of the United States.
King Ludwig II of Bavaria was an enigmatic figure who was deposed in 1886, mysteriously drowning three days later. Eccentric to the point of madness, history tells us that in the years before he died Ludwig engaged in a worldwide search for a new kingdom, one separate, apart, and in lieu of Bavaria. A place he could retreat into and rule as he wished. But a question remains: did he succeed?
Enter Cotton Malone. After many months, Malone’s protégé, Luke Daniels, has managed to infiltrate a renegade group intent on winning Bavarian independence from Germany. Daniels has also managed to gain the trust of the prince of Bavaria, a frustrated second son intent on eliminating his brother, the duke, and restoring the Wittelsbach monarchy, only now with him as king. Everything hinges on a 19th century deed which proves that Ludwig’s long-rumored search bore fruit—legal title to lands that Germany, China, and the United States all now want, only for vastly different reasons.
In a race across Bavaria for clues hidden in Ludwig’s three fairytale castles—Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee—Malone and Daniels battle an ever-growing list of deadly adversaries, all intent on finding the last kingdom.

What was your favorite childhood read and why? I honestly believe it might be impossible for me to narrow this down to just one book. Can I give a few? First, I adored Where the Red Fern Grows. The story had just the perfect mix of coming-of-age angst, country mountain setting, adventure, and most of all, an emotional glimpse of the heartfelt love between a child and their pets. I cried and cried over the ending when I first read it, and I still cry over it today. I’ve tried reading it aloud to my kids but I’m not sure we’ve ever finished the last chapter because I broke down in sobs and couldn’t finish! My two runners-up would be Island of the Blue Dolphins and The Sign of the Beaver.
Do you have a go-to comfort book that you’ve read over and over? The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy by Jenny Han will forever be a favorite. I love the beachy setting and the sort-of, on-again/off-again love triangle. There’s a good dose of deep emotions and a swoonworthy connection between the protagonist Belly and her long-time love interest. It’s an easy read that always supplies the deep feels I’m looking for.
Why do you love reading? There’s validity to the saying that readers live a thousand lives through their books. First and foremost, I read to relax, to escape all the nagging thoughts in my own head about to-do lists and deadlines and whatever else is stressing me out. There’s something so pleasant about sinking into a terrific novel and feeling as if you’re walking in someone else’s shoes for a while. And with that being said, reading is also an awesome way to get perspective—on common human issues, social aspects, and cultures outside your own. Also, as an author, I read to keep my own craft strong. As a writing mentor, one of the things I always have told my mentees (and I practice myself) is to read in my genre.
What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year? Hands down, the best book I’ve read so far in 2022 is Book Lovers by Emily Henry. I saw it heavily discussed online so I grabbed a copy and wow! I generally prefer the love-in-a-small-town trope but I love how this book turned that a bit on its ear. The protagonist is anything but a “country girl” but there’s something so endearing about her and her love interest both being city folk “trapped” in the small town. The chemistry between them is spot on with just the right amount of sizzle.
What’s on your nightstand right now? The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston. Ghosts and ghost writers and secrets in a Southern town? Yes, please! I’m loving it so far.

Four-time Hugo Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author N.K. Jemisin crafts a glorious tale of identity, resistance, magic and myth.
All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.
In order to defeat him, and the Enemy who holds his purse strings, the avatars will have to join together with the other Great Cities of the world in order to bring her down for good and protect their world from complete destruction.
N.K. Jemisin’s Great Cities Duology, which began with The City We Became and concludes with The World We Make, is a masterpiece of speculative fiction from one of the most important writers of her generation.

11/8/22 - Little, Brown and Company - $29.00
LAPD detective Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch team up to hunt the brutal killer who is Bosch’s “white whale”—a man responsible for the murder of an entire family.
A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.
For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him—the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: come volunteer as an investigator in her new Open-Unsolved Unit, and he can pursue his “white whale” with the resources of the LAPD behind him.
First priority for Ballard is to clear the unsolved rape and murder of a sixteen-year-old girl. The decades-old case is essential to the councilman who supported re-forming the unit, and who could shutter it again—the victim was his sister. When Ballard gets a “cold hit” connecting the killing to a similar crime, proving that a serial predator has been at work in the city for years, the political pressure has never been higher. To keep momentum going, she has to pull Bosch off his own investigation, the case that is the consummation of his lifelong mission.
The two must put aside old resentments and new tensions to run to ground not one but two dangerous killers who have operated with brash impunity. In what may be his most gripping and profoundly moving book yet, Michael Connelly shows once again why he has been dubbed “one of the greatest crime writers of all time” (Ryan Steck, Crimereads).

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache returns in the eighteenth book in #1 New York Timesbestseller Louise Penny's beloved series.
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge.
But something has.
As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines.
But to what end?
Gamache and Beauvoir’s memories of that tragic case, the one that first brought them together, come rushing back. Did their mother’s murder hurt them beyond repair? Have those terrible wounds, buried for decades, festered and are now about to erupt?
As Chief Inspector Gamache works to uncover answers, his alarm grows when a letter written by a long dead stone mason is discovered. In it the man describes his terror when bricking up an attic room somewhere in the village. Every word of the 160-year-old letter is filled with dread. When the room is found, the villagers decide to open it up.
As the bricks are removed, Gamache, Beauvoir and the villagers discover a world of curiosities. But the head of homicide soon realizes there’s more in that room than meets the eye. There are puzzles within puzzles, and hidden messages warning of mayhem and revenge.
In unsealing that room, an old enemy is released into their world. Into their lives. And into the very heart of Armand Gamache’s home.

“Beautifully written and carefully observed . . . King is a wildly talented writer.” —Chicago Tribune
Fifteen years ago Vida Avery arrived alone and pregnant at elite Fayer Academy. She has since become a fixture and one of the best English teachers Fayer has ever had. Living on campus, on an island off the New England coast, Vida has cocooned herself and her son, Peter, from the outside world and from an inside secret. For years she has lived largely through the books she teaches, but when she accepts the impulsive marriage proposal of ardent widower Tom Belou, the prescribed life Vida has constructed is swiftly dismantled.
Peter, however, welcomes the changes. Excited to move off campus, eager to have siblings at last, Peter anticipates a regular life with a “normal” family. But the Belou children are still grieving, and the memory of their recently dead mother exerts a powerful hold on the house. As Vida begins teaching her signature book, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, a nineteenth-century tale of an ostracized woman and social injustice, its themes begin to echo eerily in her own life and Peter sees that the mother he perceived as indomitable is collapsing and it is up to him to help.

11/15/22 - Grand Central Publishing - $29.00
From celebrated ballerina and New York Times bestselling author Misty Copeland, a heartfelt memoir about her friendship with trailblazer Raven Wilkinson which captures the importance of mentorship, shared history, and honoring the past to ensure a stronger future.
Misty Copeland made history as the first African-American principal ballerina at the American Ballet Theatre. Her talent, passion, and perseverance enabled her to make strides no one had accomplished before. But as she will tell you, achievement never happens in a void. Behind her, supporting her rise was her mentor Raven Wilkinson. Raven had been virtually alone in her quest to breach the all-white ballet world when she fought to be taken seriously as a Black ballerina in the 1950s and 60s. A trailblazer in the world of ballet decades before Misty’s time, Raven faced overt and casual racism, hostile crowds, and death threats for having the audacity to dance ballet.
The Wind at My Back tells the story of two unapologetically Black ballerinas, their friendship, and how they changed each other—and the dance world—forever. Misty Copeland shares her own struggles with racism and exclusion in her pursuit of this dream career and honors the women like Raven who paved the way for her but whose contributions have gone unheralded. She celebrates the connection she made with her mentor, the only teacher who could truly understand the obstacles she faced, beyond the technical or artistic demands.
A beautiful and wise memoir of intergenerational friendship and the impressive journeys of two remarkable women,
The Wind at My Backcaptures the importance of mentorship, of shared history, and of respecting the past to ensure a stronger future.

The dramatic and deliciously swashbuckling story of Sarah Kidd, the wife of the famous pirate Captain Kidd, charting her transformation from New York socialite to international outlaw during the Golden Age of Piracy
Captain Kidd was one of the most notorious pirates to ever prowl the seas. But few know that Kidd had an accomplice, a behind-the-scenes player who enabled his plundering and helped him outpace his enemies.
That accomplice was his wife, Sarah Kidd, a well-to-do woman whose extraordinary life is a lesson in reinvention and resourcefulness. Twice widowed by twenty-one and operating within the strictures of polite society in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New York, Sarah secretly aided and abetted her husband, fighting alongside him against his accusers. More remarkable still was that Sarah not only survived the tragedy wrought by her infamous husband’s deeds, but went on to live a successful and productive life as one of New York’s most prominent citizens.
Marshaling in newly discovered primary-source documents from archives in London, New York and Boston, historian and journalist Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos reconstructs the extraordinary life of Sarah Kidd, uncovering a rare example of the kind of life that pirate wives lived during the Golden Age of Piracy. A compelling tale of love, treasure, motherhood and survival, this landmark work of narrative nonfiction weaves together the personal and the epic in a sweeping historical story of romance and adventure.

From beloved actor and producer Omar Epps and writer Clarence A. Haynes comes the biggest epic fantasy of the year. A powerful saga of three teens, the children of refugees from a fallen African utopia, who must navigate their newfound powers in a climate-ravaged New York City. Perfect for fans of Black Panther and Children of Blood and Bone.
For Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho, Nubia is a mystery. Before they were born, a massive storm destroyed their ancestral homeland, forcing their families to flee across the ocean to New York City. Nubia, a utopic island nation off the coast of West Africa, was no more, and their parents’ sorrow was too deep for them to share much of their history beyond the folklore.
But New York, ravaged by climate change and class division, is far from a safe haven for refugees, and Nubians live as outcasts, struggling to survive in the constantly flooding lower half of Manhattan, while the rich thrive in the tech-driven sky city known as the Up High.
To many, being Nubian means you’re fated for a life plagued by difficulties and disrespect. But Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho are beginning to feel there might be more. Something within them is changing, giving each of them extraordinary powers. Extraordinary and terrifying powers that seem to be tied to the secrets their parents have kept from them.
And there are people Up High watching, eager to do anything they can to become even more powerful than they already are. Now Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho will be faced with the choice—do they use their inheritance to lift their people, or to leave them behind. The fate of their city, and their people, hangs in the balance.

Little Secrets by Jennifer Hillier
|
|
Not sure how I missed this one since I read and loved Jar of Hearts and Things We Do in the Dark. I picked it up to read because I saw that it is going to be made into a TV series. Wow - is that going to be some gut wrenching show to watch. I hated what Marin and Derrick were going through but I also hated how Marin and Derrick were acting. But, who was I to say that I wouldn't have acted the same way as Marin knowing I was to blame for my child being missing. I thought Derrick was a jerk but then that is what Hillier intended us to think. What I didn't think of or see coming was the ending. If you haven't read this yet do yourself a favor and read it before the TV series comes out.

The Prisoner by B. A. Paris
|
|
Imagine being kidnapped and locked in total darkness for days and days. How Amelie acts during this time - her thoughts, her flashbacks, and her observations as well as her attempts to escape are a good portion of the book. The vivid description of what she is going through literally kept me on the edge of my seat. I did figure out one small part of what was going on, but I had no idea why or how things all fit together. I thought this was one of Paris's best books to date.

The Resemblance by Lauren Nossett
|
|
The Resemblance takes place in Athens, GA and is a realistic look at campus life from the perspective of professors, students, and public officials with a heavy emphasis on sororities and fraternities and the harm they cause. It looks at how politicians and officials tend to turn a blind eye rather than upset wealthy parents or give a University a bad reputation. But more than that it is a story about Detective Marlitt Kaplan and her demons and her determination to find out who killed a college student, even though it is being considered a suicide or just a horrible accident by her colleagues and superiors.

A Cosmic Kind of Love by Samantha Young
|
|
Hallie is a perennial people-pleaser who manages to get in some quite interesting situations because of it. Add to that her job as an event organizer, and it seems like everyone in her life sees her as a joke. After a client accidentally sends her private video messages from her astronaut ex-boyfriend, Hallie records and sends her own video letters in response as a way to let off steam. And since the emails bounce, it does no harm to keep sending them, right? Except the astronaut in question, Chris, is getting them, and falling for Hallie just as surely as she's falling for him. When they cross paths at an event, it becomes clear that there's definitely something between them. But with the family baggage and insecurities they would both bring to a new relationship, are they really as destined to be together as it seems? Hallie is so relatable, and I love her best friend Althea, who is a total mama bear. But it's especially great when Hallie grows enough in her confidence to stand up for herself. A great rom-com.

Ship Wrecked by Olivia Dade
|
|
Your favorite Gods of the Gates stars are back, this time with Peter and Maria's story front and center! The two co-stars have a rocky beginning, with Maria leaving Peter after a one-night stand, only to run into each other the next day at the casting call. Then they spend six years together filming on a remote Irish island, forming their own little family with the crew -- but not in a romantic relationship. They both have baggage, and they both have to face themselves and each other after filming wraps, but as Olivia Dade's books always are, readers will willingly go along for the ride. Dade's characters are so much fun and amazingly 3-dimensional in a way that makes you root for them wholeheartedly. And this book in particular carries a lot of emotion that I think will resonate with readers with their own emotional baggage.

Tennal is a neuromodified 'reader' who can read emotions and minds. He's also a spoiled, rich playboy who's now been conscripted into the military, forced to sync with neuromodified architect Surit who can control others. But when Surit finds out that Tennal is not there of his own free will, he refuses to execute the illegal sync, and the two determine to fake it until Tennal can manage an escape. Through action-packed missions involving possible traitors, political intrigue, and family secrets uncovered by them both, Tennal and Surit forge a bond that brings them closer to each other than either has been to anyone else -- but can it transcend Surit's principles and Tennal's desire for freedom? I loved watching both Tennal and Surit's character growth within Maxwell's wonderful world building, and the slow burn romance was amazing.

A Quiet Life by Ethan Joella
|
|
Loneliness and grief-and how we deal with it-are at the center of this new novel by Ethan Joella. Three seemingly unrelated people are trying desperately to keep their heads above water in a sea of grief. Chuck is mourning his wife's death to cancer, Ella is anguished after her daughter's kidnapping, and Kirsten misses her dad who was senselessly murdered. Yes, it's a sad novel, but the sadness brings kindness and beauty as the characters' lives interweave in unexpected ways. Perfect for fans of Anne Tyler and Ann Patchett.

How to Survive Everything by Ewan Morrison
|
|
This book is so incredibly inventive that it captures you from page one and forces you to stay glued to the action until the very end. Told through the lens of a teenage girl who along with her younger brother are tricked by their father on a weekend visit to join him and a sketchy group of others at his post-apocalyptic survivalist compound. Dad has gathered his children in advance of what he predicts will be a society destroying massive pandemic which will make COVID look like a slight inconvenience. Once you're in the compound, you are into stay, which gets tricky when ex-wife Mom shows up and wants to liberate her kids. This one is exceptionally well told - is there really a pandemic? Evidence seems to suggest...but?? Regardless, the colorful group have to face many obstacles, some life-threatening as they progress through this adventure. A wildly entertaining read, I highly recommend, very cleverly crafted to be shown through the eyes of a child.

This book has a theme that anyone who ever dialed a wrong number can understand. For the single person a very safe connection, it is over the phone, no FaceTime or Zoom, just chatting. When they both realize that they enjoy one another's company plans to meet are arranged. Then life happens. The book delves into deep subjects and character development that keep you engaged until the last page.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate
|

Lisa Wingate is a master storyteller and I am particularly attached to her historical fiction. Each time I read one of the books I learn of a part of our southern past that is mostly forgotten, or in the case of the Tennessee Children's Home, swept under the rug. Rill is an amazing child faced with horrors most of us will be unable to imagine. We have Lisa Wingate to bring them to life and paint a picture of horrible corruption and poverty, but also show the amazing determination that can survive anything. The book is an expose and deeply moving family history. Any fan of southern history, especially South Carolina and Tennessee will enjoy this book.

Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins
|
|
This book keeps you hanging on trying to determine who you can trust and who to fear. Daily you change your allegiance and become more embroiled in something you cannot understand. What could be more romantic and adventurous than sailing to an atoll from Hawaii on a glamorous trip of a lifetime? When you are young, carefree, and fearless you don't hesitate. Just met your fellow travelers? Not even worth considering. Lux is on the mend from the death of her Mother and feels abandoned and adrift. Meeting Nico and following him to Maui seems to be the answer to her loneliness. Heading to an abandoned atoll with a mysterious and dark history seems romantic. Unfortunately it is everything you never imagined. The book moves seamlessly between before, after and now. It is rare you find a book with six characters where they are so well developed you feel like you know all of them. This book, in typical Hawkins style accomplishes that feat. You will be shocked at the ending of the story, be sure your reading will not be interrupted!
