An attempted robbery has been reported aboard a cargo vessel anchored at Callao Anchorage, Peru. Four robbers were spotted boarding the vessel via the anchor chain, before breaking into the forecastle store. The perpetrators threatened a duty crew member with a knife as he approached the forecastle. The alarm was raised and the crew mustered, resulting in the robbers escaping empty handed. The incident was reported to the local agents who notified local authorities.
This is the first incident of this type to occur in Callao anchorage this year. However, eight similar incidents occurred last year, with the most recent occurring less than a month ago, on 19 December. In most instances, robbers were discovered armed with knives, and able to escape with ship's and/or crew property; most incidents occurring on or around 2000LT, or 0230LT.
