Today's Bible Study Lesson
“All People Praise God”
Aim: Understand
how
God’s salvation and justice for all people inspires praise and
worship;
Embrace
the
significance of praising God in unity, and Respond
to
God’s
love, goodness, and grace with joy and exaltation.
Background:
Revelation 7:9-17
Bible Lesson:
Revelation 7:9-17
Memory
Verses:
“These are they which came out of great tribulation,
and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the
Lamb.” Revelation 7:14b KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Revelation
is the last book of the New Testament. The word Revelation means
“to take the cover off.” The Apostle John records in Revelation
the visions given to him while he was on the Isle of Patmos, where
he was exile for preaching the Gospel. One commentary states
“Revelation is a book about the future and about the present. It
offers future hope to all believers, especially those who have
suffered for their faith, by proclaiming Christ’s final victory
over evil and the reality of eternal life with Him.” Revelation
1-3 are letters to the Churches of Asia Minor while Revelation 4-22
are messages for the modern day church.
-
Prior
to where our study begins with Revelation 7:9, the Lamb of God, who
is the second Person of the God Head, opens the sixth of seven seals
of a scroll that only the Lamb was worthy to open. Chapter 7 begins
with John seeing four angels standing at the four corners of the
earth holding back the four winds of the earth. A call comes to them
to not harm the earth or the sea or the trees until the 144,000
servants, 12,000 from every tribe of the sons of Israel are sealed.
12,000 each from the tribes of Reuben, of Gad, of Asher, of
Naphtali, of Manasseh, of Simeon, of Levi, of Issachar, of Zebulun,
of Joseph, and of Benjamin. This is the sealing of the sons of the
tribes of Israel and is referenced by the phrase “After this”.
John saw in his vision a great crowd, too many to be counted. John
describes this crowd to be comprised of people from every nation,
kindred, people and tongues. They all stood before the throne of the
Lamb. They were all dressed in white robes and waved palm branches
in their hands. The diversity of the crowd symbolizes that God’s
salvation has no restriction and is available to all who will
believe and accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. In other words,
even though God’s Plan used the descendants of Abraham to
introduce salvation through Jesus Christ, we too experience
salvation based upon on our faith and trust in Jesus Christ and a
belief in His death, burial and resurrection. The white robes worn
by the crowd symbolized purity. This purity is not brought about by
their or our perfection, but through the perfect sacrifice of Jesus
who died on the cross for our sins. The palm branches were used in
celebrations like the Feast of the Tabernacles and were also used
during the triumphant entrance of Jesus during the last week of His
earthly life (John 12:13).
-
This
enumerable crowd standing before the throne of the Lamb was not
silent. They were shouting with all their might “Salvation comes
from our God who sits on the throne and from the Lamb!” Salvation
comes from God through His gift of His only Begotten Son, Jesus
Christ and Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins. “For
by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it
is] the gift of God:” Ephesians 2:8 KJV
-
As
John continues to describe what he saw, there were angels, elders,
and four living beings surrounding the throne of God. We know that
angels are created beings with the sole purpose of doing the Will of
God. For example, an angel announced to Mary her role in bringing
Jesus into the world. Another angel declared to the women at the
borrowed empty tomb of Arimathaea, that Jesus had risen from the
dead. On many other occasions, angels delivered messages for the
Almighty Living God. In Revelation 4:4, John sees 24 elders seated
around the throne clothed in white raiment with golden crowns on
their heads. Revelation 4:6-9 records that there were four beasts
full of eyes round about the throne. One beast has the face of a
Lion, one the face of calf, one the face of man, and the last with
face of an eagle flying. Each beast had six wings and they
continually day and night proclaim “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God
Almighty, which was, and is and is to come.” On cue when the four
beasts gave glory and honor and thanked Him who was seated on the
throne, Revelation 4:10, states the elders fell down with their
faces to the ground before throne as they worshiped and cast the
crowns from their heads at the foot of the throne.
-
The
song of praise and worship that is sung at this time of sincere
worship is “Amen! Blessings, and glory, and wisdom, and
thanksgiving, and honour, and power and might be unto our God for
ever and ever. Amen.” This is a seven fold acknowledgement of
God’s magnificence. First, Blessings, which mean words of praise
and commendation. Next, Glory which acknowledges God’s radiant
splendor which lights up His surroundings. Wisdom, which
acknowledges that all truth and all knowledge comes from God.
Thanksgiving, which expresses sincere appreciation for all God’s
wonderful works in the past and in the present. Honour, which
acknowledges that God is worthy to be worshiped because of who He
is, Creator and Sustainer of all that we see and do not see. Power,
there is nothing too hard or impossible for God. Finally, might. We
draw our strength from God who is Almighty.
-
Next,
one of the twenty four elders asks John, “Who are these clothed in
white? Where did they come from?” John states he is unable to
answer, but turns back to the elder for the answer. The answer is
they are those who died in the great tribulation and who have washed
their robes in the blood of the Lamb which made their robes white as
snow. This reference to tribulation could be that of the Great
Tribulation Period prior to the end of time or the general trials
throughout the ages. At any rate, the reference of their robes
washed in the blood of the Lamb means that these saints stood strong
during persecution in the Name of the Lord and the cleansing power
of the Lord’s Blood allowed them to be clothed in robes of white.
Because of their faithfulness and Jesus’ Sacrifice, they are
enabled to stand before God’s throne and to serve Him day and
night in His very presence. God provides for them shelter and
protection.
-
This
great crowd standing before God’s throne will never hunger,
thirst, or be scorched by the sun because the Lamb of God is their
Shepherd. He will provide for them and lead them to living springs
of water. The world’s sorrows will no longer trouble them for He
will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Their blissful state
includes an exchange of their earthly bodies having new ones which
are designed for Eternity. This future prophesy provides hope for
all believers that our current trials, tribulations, and troubles
will one day be no more and we will be in the presence of the Living
God we will give Him praise and experience Eternal Life with our
Creator and Sustainer.
Take
Aways:
-
God’s
salvation is available to all who will accept Jesus Christ as Lord
and Savior.
-
Eternal
Life is a reality that gives us hope in spite of our trials,
tribulations, and troubles in this life.
-
Our
reasonable response to God’s Grace, Goodness, and Mercy is sincere
praise and it is just a rehearsal for our praise of God in Eternity.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“O
come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the
rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with
thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.” Psalm
95:1-2 KJV
“The
LORD [is] my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my
strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my
salvation, [and] my high tower.” Psalm 18:2 KJV
“For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.” John 3:16-17 KJV
“This
is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become
the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for
there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we
must be saved.” Act s4:11-12 KJV
“Wherefore
God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above
every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
[things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the
earth; And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is]
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11 KJV
