SUNDAY MORNING WOMAN-PROJECT 2022

After almost 18 months of practical and hands-on exercises at the SMW project, we had to part ways with the ladies at the project in December 2022. The SMW project in 2022 was focused on hair braiding, wig manufacturing, nail art, makeup and baking. The most difficult part was saying goodbye to our sisters and their children, who became family to us. For their farewell, all five mothers and participants received everything they needed to kickstart their own business and become self-sufficient. They also received money to assist them transitioning back into their communities to start working and supporting their families. For some, loszughana offered extra support with getting new accommodations since they had difficulties in getting apartments/rooms. Overall, five mothers and SMW participants left the project together with eleven children. We had a great time with all the ladies at the project and even though it was sad saying goodbye, we are happy to see them following a new adventure which makes every penny and support worth it.

SMW 2023

After a successful farewell to the 2022 applicants, we prepared to recruit new females at the village as part of our annual strategy. The team was fortunate to have a local volunteer on board to help with the search for new girls. After weeks of searching and interviewing several ladies from different communities, about ten were shortlisted and invited to visit the project location and children’s village community.
Although the candidates were enthusiastic, several had difficulty leaving their families for the first time and had to withdraw, bringing the total to five. Before being relocated to the community, all the young mothers were medically screened to ensure they were clear of infectious diseases or illness which could endanger the inhabitants at the children’s village. After weeks of waiting, the ladies and their children were overjoyed to be selected for the project. The children's village welcomed five new ladies and 11 new children. In an official welcome ceremony, all new mothers were asked to bring a relative or close relation to witness their new location. LoszuGhana used the opportunity to show the new mothers around and guide them through the code of conduct which they had to sign as a final affirmation of their interest in the project.

LoszuGhana continues to impact many lives through its Sunday morning Woman (SMW) project and for this year we have stepped up our game by focusing on the candidates' interests rather than the financial limits associated with delivering various skill training. In contrast to prior years, this year's training incorporates fashion design and hair styling in addition to hair braiding and nails arts and pedicure that were introduced last year. The sole objective is to bring diversity in our trainings to meet the demands and appropriate skill set required to successfully establish a small sustainable business.
Currently, three ladies are undergoing hairdo, hair braiding, cosmetics and nail tech training and two ladies are receiving training in fashion design, which includes fabric design and sewing. All trainings are completely hands-on and practical due to the limited training period of 13 months with us in the project.

DUA-PA PROJECT (progress-check on past SMW candidates)

A follow-up on the value of the acquired skills and training in the SMW project plays a key role in the continuity and advancement of the SMW project. To ensure that our SMW graduates are utilizing their skills, we introduced the “Dua-Pa” initiative this year. With this initiative we want to support all of the former participants and also get an overview of their current challenges.
For this reason, the LoszuGhana team visited all five past participants at their various communities in March 2023. Three out of five participants have already settled and are actively working in their communities.

As they say, their first big challenge was to set up and integrate. After accomplishing that they had to address, convince and gain new customers. Also to being able to purchase additional materials (for hair braiding, baking and nails) they had to gain extra capital, which has been another challenging factor in the process of setting up their business.

Moreover, they are still working on finding a permanent structure and location to permanently setup their business.

RECONSTRUCTION OF KIDS PLAYGROUND

With the arrival of 11 new healthy and vibrant children (seven girls and four boys ranging in age from ten months to twelve years) we have a total of 18 kids currently living in the village and receiving care, support, protection and free education.
In spite of a few difficulties at the beginning, we happy to say that all kids have integrated into their new children's village environment and love their new home. They are enthusiastic to learn and tryout new things. Those of school-age have been enrolled in our community school and others between one and a half to four years are in our kindergarten. Our new kids, likewise, love to play. Most of their learning on daily basis happens at the playground through socializing and playing with their peers.

Unfortunately we still do not have enough or adequate playing equipment for their playground. But thanks to your continuous support, we already do have a swing and a slide (currently in a depreciable state) installed at our kids’ playground and a table tennis for older kids. As part of our renovation and reconstruction plans for this year, we would like to create an improved and safer environment and playing equipment for our kids at the project and others who visit. We feel that play areas are crucial locations for children to learn and develop both their intellectual and social abilities. We need your help to make this feasible for the children's development.
Planned as part of a mini project to improve our kid’s playground are the building/installation of a merry-go-round, sandbox, additional swing and football pitch with movable goal poles.
