The latest batch of prints from Croydon Camera House has been collected and are available directly from Jim Reid.
Contact Jim on 0411 581 730 to arrange a time to collect them from his home. We apologise for the iconvenience but Albert is unable to attend KPS in person next Wednesday night when the prints would normally have been distributed.
The upside is that you can now get your prints earlier, and remember, prints no longer need to be matted (but it looks so much better if you do). Packaging material is now available from KPS for unmatted prints. See the KPS Shop for prices etc or click here for more information about the packaging.
If you want packaging materials before the next physical meeting, order them online and you can collect them from Noel Butcher.
Call 0419 727 777 to arrange collection of packaging materials, not prints.

Home Insurance. Update Below. An odd thing to talk about in a camera club newsletter. Or is it?
There have been a few stories recently on the ABC News website. https://www.abc.net.au/news/20...
In essence, it seems that some insurance companies have been voiding insurance policies if there is even a whiff of a 'business' being run from a home. Being a photographer, you may have charged someone for photography services and if so, you may be in breach of your insurance agreement where you ticked 'No' at the spot where it asks if you run a business from home.
I checked with my insurance broker and sure enough, on the surface, she thinks that I was at risk because I occasionally make some money from photography (mainly the books I have been involved in) as I 'run a business' from home.
I have also asked the insurance company to define a 'business' from their perspective. There is nothing in the Product Disclosure Statement that defines 'business', so it may be whatever they say it is, which means that it is a huge benefit to the insurance company to deny a claim should I be unfortunate enough to have to make a claim. They may not worry about a $5000.00 claim but a $500,000 claim is a whole different situation.
If you make any money from photography to help fund your hobby, please check with your insurance company. Be advised though that in at least one case mentioned by the ABC, the insurance company cancelled a policy on the spot https://www.abc.net.au/news/20... when queried by a policyholder.
I have found out that, in my case, according to the insurance company, I can be covered for a Home Business Extension at a cost of $500.00 pa on top of my regular home insurance. So generous of them. At that rate, I would effectively be paying about $100 per day for insurance for the amount of time I spend editing my photos for the books I have been involved in. I would also pay $500.00 per annum if I was working 24/7 doing the same. I am currently leaning towards no longer photographing for money and having the satisfaction of telling the insurance company that they can shove their Home Business Extension in a place where the sun don't shine.
So, if you earn anything from your photography, please check your insurance policy.

Insurance Update #2
Given that I do not believe that I run a home business but my insurance company does, I have queried them not twice, not three times, but four times now, seeking an answer as to what they think a business is.
I asked them specifically for a definition of 'business, profession, trade or occupation' which is their definition of a Home Business run from the insured premises. The response from the insurance company starts with "Sorry I am a little unclear on the question".
I would have thought the question was crystal clear, but that's just me.
My last two requests asked if and how they differentiate between a hobby that may make some money and a business. I hope the word 'differentiate' doesn't stump them.
One email has simply been ignored whereas the second said, in part, "Unfortunately, we are an intermediated insurer and are not licensed to deal directly with clients. If you have any queries regarding policy coverage please speak to an insurance broker to find the best policy for your needs."
So, basically they declned to tell me anything.
This saga is definitely starting to get tedious.
Noelb.

Paul Reiffer is a British landscape and architectral photographer who is a Capture One ambassador. The vast bulk of what I know about Capture One, I learned from watching his videos on YouTube, mainly during lockdown. Paul was doing weekly sessions but now does one free session per month which is based around Capture One but he also does one paid ($12.00 session of about 90 minutes or so) also once a month. The paid sessions are about specific subjects, not so much about Capture One and as such may be of use to non Capture One users. Read about this class here.
The class is interactive although they are normally held at ridiculous o'clock Melbourne time so I simply watch the replay at a civilized hour. You can revisit as many times as you like.
Previous paid classes have been about night cityscapes, golden hour landscapes and black and White conversion. Capture One is mentioned in all but although the tools may have different names and slightly different functionality, many other image editing packages will do similar things.

Members may not realise it, but the committee is always striving to improve how KPS runs. At the August committee meeting, we decided to trial unmatted prints for our internal evaluations.
Matting prints has always been an issue, for while a mat finishes off an image nicely, they are time comsuming to make and can be costly to produce.
For the remainder of 2022, KPS will trial unmatted prints for our internal evaluations.
Of course, you are still welcome, even encouraged, to mat your images for the best presentation.
KPS will source suitable clear bags (photo friendly - not all plastics are), thin backing board and possibly rigid cardboard envelopes, all to protect your unmounted images if you choose to look after your prints.
Members could submit unmounted prints:
- As is, without any packaging/protection.
- In a clear bag.
- In a clear bag with backing board.
- In a clear bag in a rigid mailer.
- No bag but in a rigid mailer.
- In a clear bag with backing board in a rigid mailer.
We wil let you know when we have acquired these items and how much they will cost in a future newsletter. As with everything KPS does, we will try to strike a balance between cost to our members and the financial viability of our club.
We are doing this in an endeavour to encourage more prints in our image evaluations and will decide if we continue this at a later date.
We still have a few issues to sort out with this idea, so stay tuned.
We will update the website instructions to reflect this change as time and circumstance permit.

After successfully trialling using our web system for obtaining prints for members from Croydon Camera House, we have now set up a payment process for members.
Members can now submit prints and make payment online.
Basically, work out how much you need to spend, make a payment via the KPS Shop, add your prints into the relevant monthly print batch and then wait for the prints to turn up at a KPS meeting.
You will need to plan well ahead to take advantage of this system.
Visit the KPS website, Information, then Useful Documents for detailed information.
The direct link is here but you will need to be logged in. This file automatically downloads to your system and is a docx file.

Paying for your Prints from Croydon Camera House |
|
Once you know how much you need to pay, simply use the dropdown button and choose the correct amount.
Due to a limitation with the PayPal system we cannot have more than 10 options for payment, so if necessary, simply re-visit and repay as many times as you need. For example if you need to pay $500.00 just make 10 x $50.00 payments. Simple really!

Are your prints rubbish? Perhaps too dark? Borrow a calibrator from the club to help. |
Can your prints be better?
We have provided a few hints that may help here.
|
|
|
|
|
|
KPS has obtained two sets of a series of small prints made by Croydon Camera House for you to see the various surfaces available if you prefer a surface other the the 'matte' which is actually a lustre surface, which is what we order.
You cannot specifiy a surface with our ordering system and you will need to do your own thing if you want a different surface.
In the sample prints collection is a print of a standard test image that you can download and compare to the same image on YOUR screen to give you an idea of how your files may turn out. This is not a very scientific method but better than nothing.

KPS
at the Stringybark Festival
Knox’s
Stringybark Festival is back again this year - an event show-casing
creativity and environmentally sustainable practice, with live
entertainment, community stalls, workshops. There’ll
also be a great selection of food stalls. It will be held on Sunday
16 October, 2022, 10am-4pm, at the Rowville Community Centre.
KPS
will be represented at the festival. With
a 3 x 6m marquee, we will be showing member photos, on this year’s
festival theme of Our Backyard (you can of course read almost
anything into this!), providing simple set-ups for visitors to take
portrait or still life photos using their own camera or phone, and
providing several short info sessions on still life or portrait,
emphasising simple sustainable accessible ways of working.
This
will be a fun day, with opportunities to entertain and inform kids
and adults, and maybe get a few new members as well!
Given
that we will need a minimum of 3 members at the stall for most of the
day, we will be calling for helpers. So, if anyone could spare KPS
2-3 hours on Sunday 16 October, that would be wonderful.
Please get in touch with Gwyn or Adam if you can help support KPS with this short project.

A woman decided to give herself a big treat for her 70th birthday by staying overnight in a really nice hotel..
When she checked out the next morning, the desk clerk handed her a bill for $250.00. She demanded to know why the charge was so high "I agree it's a nice hotel, but the rooms aren't worth $250..00 for just an overnight stay - I didn't even have breakfast!"
The clerk told her that $250.00 is the 'standard rate,' and breakfast had been included had she wanted it.
She insisted on speaking to the Manager. The Manager appeared and, forewarned by the desk clerk, announced: "This hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center which are available for use."
"But I didn't use them."
'Well, they are here, and you could have."
He went on to explain that she could also have seen one of the in-hotel shows for which they were so famous. "We have the best entertainers from the world over performing here."
"But I didn't go to any of those shows.."
"Well, we have them, and you could have."
No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, she replied, "But I didn't use it!" and the Manager countered with his standard response. After several minutes discussion, and with the Manager still unmoved, she decided to pay, wrote a check and gave it to him.
The Manager was surprised when he looked at the check.
"But Madam, this check is for only $50.00"
"That's correct I charged you $200.00 for sleeping with me."
"But I didn't!"
"Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have."

Phil's Dad Jokes
Why is it a bad idea to iron your four-leaf clover?
Cause you shouldn't press your luck.
Imagine if you walked into a bar and there was a long line of people waiting to take a swing at you.
That's the punch line.
