Reading Program

Book Review - Social Action 2018 Bonus Book

"Hospitable Planet:  Faith,  Action, and Climate Change" by Stephen Jurovics.   Climate change is a very timely topic.  One that cannot be ignored . The author presents excellent information on how international, national and local measures can be taken to alleviate some of the issues of global warming.  Unfortunately it was written just before our current administration denied the facts and cancelled many of the plans that were being implemented.    Therefore, it is even more imperative that individuals, churches and organizations work harder to mitigate environmental catastrophe and "choose life"..

TAKE ACTION

For Mission Today, if you need more information and forms, please contact Bev Thomas, our Crest to Coast District Education and Interpretation (E&I) officer.

Let your reading bloom and grow this summer

Another way to increase summer reading is to participate in a summer reading challenge or program.  It is suggested that people read at LEAST 20-60 minutes a day.  Most areas offer summer reading programs for children. Many also have them for adults!  I have not yet found out what is available in all areas of our district.  For those in Clark, Klickitat, Skemania, and parts of Cowlitz counties, the summer reading program is available to adults.  I am going to print off some of the child, youth and adult "game boards" logs and have them available with the reading books.

For the Timberland Library System, I was told. The Summer Library Program runs June 1 through August 31, but you can sign up any time. You can sign up online by going to trl.beanstack.org https://trl.beanstack.org/reader365  or in person at your local library branch. If signing up online, be sure to stop by a library branch after June first so you can get a tote bag. There is a free app for the program that can be downloaded from the play store on a device by searching for Beanstack Tracker.

All ages are welcome to participate in the Summer Library Program. The prizes will vary by age group (kids, teens, and adults), but everyone will get a free book after completing 10 tasks from the log. There is one log for all ages.

Mission Today

For Mission Today, if you need information or forms to help you with this, please contact Bev Thomas, our Crest to Coast District Education and Interpretation (E&I) officer. She can be reached at bevthomas@centurylink.net or 360-573-0399. Charter for Racial Justice (Clubs)

Viewing, sharing, talking about the film 13th is ONE way that you can satisfy one of the parts of the Charter for Racial Justice.  If you have more questions about this, our Social Action officer for Crest to Coast District is Sarah McCoy.  She can be reached at jinxmccoy@comcast.net.

Annually, every Charter for Racial Justice Club Unit must  read and review the Racial Justice Charter. Find printable or downloadable on website unitedmethodistwomen.org.

The link above takes you to the printable word document. It explains how easy it is to participate in this program.

“We recognize racism as sin and affirm the ultimate and temporal worth of all persons.  We rejoice in the gifts that ethnic histories and cultures bring to our total life.  We commend and encourage the self-awareness of all racial and ethnic groups and oppressed people that leads them to demand their just and equal rights as members of society.”

Final Thoughts

As we go about our business this summer, let us be like the queen bee, productive and leading the way to a better world. We do not want to be like the mosquito who buzzes around, being annoying, and not accomplishing anything. Remember, the bee is praised and the mosquito is swatted!
