Charlotte Steers carries the wisdom of Winston Churchill close to her heart: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” As a graduating senior majoring in Marketing with a concentration in Digital Marketing & Analytics, she recently completed two impactful internships at Travelers during the summers of 2022 and 2023. In this article, she shares her unforgettable experience with Marketing Today.
Among Charlotte’s many memorable experiences at Travelers, one stands out: the Travelers Championship, a professional golf tournament on the PGA tour. Recalling her participation in Travelers Women’s Day during the tournament, she reflects, “It was inspiring to be part of an event that celebrated and empowered women in the world of sports and business. This experience allowed me to gain valuable insights and broaden my perspective on diversity and inclusion in the workplace.”
During her first internship with Travelers in the summer of 2022, Charlotte took on the role of Digital Media Intern. Her daily responsibilities included analyzing trends, conducting keyword research for paid search campaigns, and assisting in campaign setup and creative analysis. Additionally, Charlotte earned certifications in Google AdWords and display ads, contributing significantly to campaign strategies. Transitioning to the role of an Enterprise Marketing Intern the next summer, Charlotte was able to use her previous skills and learn new ones while managing communication calendars, facilitating training sessions, and exploring opportunities in AI for sales enablement and media, demonstrating versatility and adaptability in diverse marketing domains.
The inclusive and supportive office culture that Travelers fosters was what initially drew Charlotte in. She found this inclusivity evident through various networking events, educational opportunities, and experiences like working at the Travelers Championship. This exciting environment for growth and learning at Travelers seamlessly complemented the ideals and values Charlotte holds in her academic pursuits as well.
Reflecting on the internship selection process, Charlotte emphasizes the importance of focusing on hiring rates, networking opportunities, work arrangements, and compensation. She also hopes aspiring interns prioritize their individual search with an eye towards personal and professional goals. Her work-life balance was easily managed by a hybrid work schedule and supportive management, allowing Charlotte to engage fully in projects while maintaining a healthy personal life. Charlotte recounts that her managers at Travelers would “often check in with me to see if I wanted more responsibilities or if I felt overwhelmed.”
Offering advice to her fellow Huskies, specifically current undergraduates hoping to secure internships, Charlotte emphasizes the significance of Churchill's quote that success is never final and failure is simply part of the journey and will not be fatal. She encourages building your resume with online certifications, actively networking, attending career events, leveraging connections, and maintaining a professional online presence. She recognizes both her experiences within her sorority Alpha Chi Omega as well as the guidance from the career center as two essential experiences that helped prepare her with skills such as interview preparation and effective communication. Both of these skills and experiences played pivotal roles in securing her internships at Travelers.
Charlotte's journey proves how proactive engagement and strategic preparation pave the way for success in the competitive landscape of internships and beyond.
Thank you, Charlotte, for sharing your amazing experience with Marketing Today!
