And now, as is both traditional and fun for me, three things I've liked in this past month:
We Are the Champions: Cheese Rolling (on Netflix)
This is a documentary series with an episode about competitive cheese rolling in England. You'd think that with a name like "cheese rolling" the cheese would be the star of the show, but amazingly, it is not. The cheese itself--a double-cream Gloucester, apparently--is rolled down a very steep hill, but the race is between all the people who compete to be the first to the bottom of this terror death-drop. I'm not even sure why there has to be cheese, but cheese is great, so I'm not going to question it.
Anyway, this one's very strange and very funny and delightfully bizarre, so please enjoy.
Andor (on Disney+)
Star Wars TV shows have been... let's go with uneven. I liked The Mandalorian as much as anyone, gave up on Boba Fett after one episode, and never did get around to Obi-Wan.
But listen. Andor is REALLY GOOD. A lot of Star Wars stuff feels very tunnel-visioned and manages to make what should be a vast, interesting universe feel downright claustrophobic, but Andor is one of the few things that makes the Star Wars world feel bigger again, mostly by exploring the part of the world made up of regular people whose last name isn't Skywalker or Palpatine.
Also, Andor managed to be truly surprising with its storyline and go in several directions I didn't anticipate, which almost never happens, so of course I love it when it does.
Anyway, this show is both very Star Wars-y and grounded and legitimately, truly good, and you should watch it.
Dragon Scale Nail Polish by Mooncat
I love shiny things, and I've been painting my nails a lot recently for whatever reason, and so far this is my favorite discovery. It changes colors when you look at it from an angle! It's pretty! It's sparkly! It's EXTREMELY shiny! It makes me happy every time I look down at my hands, which is a lot! It lasted eight entire days before REALLY getting chipped, which is a miracle!
Book news ahead! Happy mid-January!
