As the days get longer, February is my favourite winter month. It is an
excellent time to explore the region without the crowds and the heat. Here are
a few ideas (in alphabetical order) for exploring in February or at any time.
Apt is not just
about its renowned Saturday market and candied fruit. The town's rich
historical legacy and cultural charm, often overlooked by many visitors, are
worth exploring. A stroll through this
mid-sized Luberon town reveals treasures such as a Roman-era wall, medieval
towers, and beautiful Belle Époque buildings.
Bandol is a serene coastal
resort to the west of Toulon on the Côte d'Azur. Its scenic beauty makes it a
popular holiday destination, perfect for those seeking a relaxing
getaway.
Carpentras is
located between Avignon and the Southern Rhône Valley. One of the many reasons
to visit this city is the Friday morning market and the annual strawberry
festival in April.
Marseille's Château d'If, a fortress rising on a rocky island, was
built in 1524 under François I to defend the city from naval invasions.
However, it was quickly converted into a state prison. The fortress is most
famous for its association with the fictional character in Alexandre Dumas' The
Count of Monte Cristo.
