"Back to School" event in Manurewa
Denise was present at the "Back to School" event in Manurewa last week. It was a great opportunity for us to connect with new families and adults with disabilities. The brightness of the sunshine muted by the smiles on everyone's faces. There were many stallholders from Te Whatu Ora and other organisations promoting the health and well-being of tamariki.

EGL (Enabling Good Lives) in Action for Indika and his family
Asoka's son Indika, is neurodiverse and needs constant care and supervision. In spite of this, he has been able to make a delightful contribution to the community with his talents in singing and voice narration. Indika and his family believe that a good life, as defined by the EGL principles, focuses on ordinary life outcomes that enable people with disabilities to live a good and meaningful life of their own choice and are happy that he is making a positive contribution to the community. You can watch him singing and signing the popular Māori “Pepeha” song here. ‘Storytime with Indi’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi04SSWOXZs
Enabling Good Lives is a socio-political movement and a practical framework guiding disabled people and their families to aim high to achieve their dreams and live fulfilling lives of their own choice. There are 8 guiding principles that will help you create a vision, navigate life and focus on how to achieve what is important to the disabled person.
- Self-determination: Control over life.
- Beginning early: Early investment in families.
- Person-centred: Tailored supports.
- Ordinary life outcomes: Living life like everyone else in the community
- Mainstream first: Using community resources.
- Mana enhancing: Respecting abilities.
- Easy to use: Simple and flexible systems.
- Relationship building: Strengthening community links
You can read more about EGL here: Supporting disabled people that offers greater choice and control over supports
