A TRIBUTE TO OUR 40 YEAR CHRISTIANS WHO ARE 80 YEARS and OLDER
The Year 2021 has
continued to be a year of trouble, struggles, a health Pandemic,
along with worldly issues of racism, political strife, and the
everyday stress of life. Due to a deadly virus called the COVID-19,
some sanctuaries remain closed or have limited services. Many
churches have gone to virtual on Live Sunday Morning services with
on-line meetings, and limited contact now called “Social
distancing” and the wearing of facial masks. Now in the middle of
2021, a new variant called “Delta”, that is supposed to be worse
that the COVID-19, has emerged. After the introduction of the
vaccinations, we still remain puzzled about what is going on!!!???
Many of our
oldest church members have lived through wars, the Spanish flu,
racial unrest as well social distresses of our nation. In spite of
it all, our church continues to be that beacon on the hill in the
community that has at its anchor –a group of very active Christians
called the 40 year Christians---those who have been Christians for at
least 40 years of more.
From that
group we wish to highlight at least 25 and possibly more—that are
80 and plus years of age! They can truly testify of the goodness and
grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This group of individuals
can also truly be a witness to Psalms 46:1 which reads “God is our
refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”

Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Glorifying God”
Aim: Compare
and
contrast spiritual and physical blindness;
Appreciate
how
God is attentive and responds to our needs,
and Practice
reaching
out to those who are marginalized by society.
Background:
Mark
10:46-52;
Luke 18:35-43
Bible Lesson:
Mark
10:46-52
Memory
Verse:
“And
Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do
unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my
sight.” Mark 10:51 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The
authorship of the Gospel according to Mark is believed to be John
Mark, who was not
a disciple. However, he was Barnabas’
cousin. He accompanied Paul and Barnabas
on their first missionary journey. He is accused of being immature
and
deserted
them during the journey and returned to Jerusalem. It is also
believed that much of his material for the book of
Mark came
from sermons that he heard Peter preach.
-
The
definition of the word Glorify is to praise and worship. This lesson
gives an account of one who had
reason to glorify God for healing brought about through an encounter
with Jesus Christ.
-
Our
lesson opens as Jesus along with
his
disciples passed
through Jericho on their journey to Jerusalem. Jesus’
reputation of
miracles and healing drew
great crowds and as they passed along the road, there was a blind
beggar whose name is Bartimaeus. He was perhaps in his usual
location seeking money because
his blindness prohibited him from working. Even though he could not
see he heard
the noise
of the crowd
as Jesus passed by and when he determined that it was Jesus of
Nazareth passing by, he cried out “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy
on me!” Those around him tried to restrain his cry for Jesus who
was a
person
of importance while
Bartimaeus was a mere beggar. The more they tried to quiet him, the
louder he cried out. No doubt he was aware of Jesus’ reputation as
a Healer and Bartimaues did not want to miss out on his opportunity
to be healed.
-
Jesus
heard Bartimaeus cry for mercy over the noise and the clammer of the
crowd and He stopped and called for Bartimaeus to come to Him. The
same folks who moments earlier had been trying to shush him, now encouraged Bartimaeous to boldly get up and go because Jesus was calling for
him.
-
Bartimaeus
shed his cloak and hastened to Jesus.
When he reached Jesus, Jesus asked
“What
do you want me to do for you?” Jesus being both human and divine
obviously knew the answer to His question. Bartimaeus’ answered
“Rabbi, let me recover my sight.”
-
Jesus
said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And
immediately he recovered his sight and followed Jesus on His way.
We can imagine how thankful Bartimaeus was to regain his sight. He had
a reason to Glorify God for his healing and he gladly followed Jesus
as
a living witness to the Goodness of God.
Take
Aways:
-
We
can boldly approach God with our requests and needs with confidence
that He is able to handle them.
-
Our
God has compassion on us and cares for us. He is aware of our
conditions and situations.
-
We
must give Glory to God for His Blessings and share what God has done
for us to others as a witness of His Goodness!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Let
us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain
mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews
4:16 KJV
“And
I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall
find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that
asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that
knocketh it shall be opened.” Luke
11:9-10 KJV
“Wherefore
seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so
easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set
before us,” Hebrews
12:1 KJV
“Therefore
humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you
in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
1 Peter
5:6-7 NKJV
“For
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John
3:16 NKJV
“I
will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify
Your name forevermore.” Psalms
86:12 NKJV

Perhaps you sent a lovely card
or sat quietly in a chair.
Perhaps you sent a flower spray
if so, we saw it there.
Perhaps you spoke the kindest words,
as any friend could say.
Perhaps you could not make it there at all
just thought of us that day,
Whatever you did to console our hearts
we thank you so much whatever the part.
