Update from site
All four arms of the junction opened yesterday
Yesterday (28 July) Whitworth Road and Beechcroft Road were reopened to road users, and motorists are now able to use all four arms of the Moonrakers junction for their journeys. We would like to thank local residents and drivers for their patience while these closures have been in place.
Over the next few days, engineers will be on-site to fully optimise the new SMART traffic lights at the junction. These lights will use sensors and technology to reduce day-to-day congestion by regulating the flow of motorists passing through the junction, prioritising lanes with heavier traffic flow in real time and improving bus punctuality by prioritising buses entering the junction.
Final surfacing work
This month our contractor has laid the final layer of tarmac and painted white lines on the northern end of Cricklade Road, Beechcroft Road and Whitworth Road.
In August the contractor will be carrying out the final three nights of resurfacing work at the southern end of the scheme to ensure the road has the longest lasting and best finish possible.
Night-time closures will take place between the hours of 8pm and 6am. The expected dates for this work are as follows:
4 August: night-time closure on Cricklade Road
5 August: night-time closure (with potential for a day-time closure*) on Cricklade Road
6 August: night-time closure on Cricklade Road
(*Please note, if a day-time closure is required on Cricklade Road on 5 August, both directions of Cricklade Road would be closed to motorists until 6am on 6 August and a diversion route would be clearly sign posted.)
To avoid delays, we would advise avoiding the Moonrakers junction during this work.
Other work happening on site
Work is progressing on the re-positioned traffic islands on Headlands Grove and Chestnut Avenue
A base layer has been laid across most of the footpaths around the junction and the profile of the footpaths has been remodelled
The contractor has set the sign post foundations
The contractor's compound has been reduced in size and moved to Bradley Road
A tree pit has been dug in the Beechcroft Road traffic island and will be planted up in the autumn
What's coming up?
Remaining work to be completed in August
The footpaths around Beechcroft Road have been built up and are awaiting the final surfacing layer. The contractor is also progressing work on the footpath along the shops on Cricklade Road
Our contractor will be installing lighting columns around the junction
As detailed above, resurfacing work will be undertaken at the southern end of the scheme in early August
Utility work on bus lane
We are currently waiting for a utility company to divert their utilities under the bus lane going northbound past the parade on Cricklade Road. Once this work has been programmed into the utility companies' schedule, we expect the work to take a week to complete.
We do not expect these works to impact on other motorists using the junction.
