December 2

Greetings, St. Andrew’s Community and friends!

The day has arrived! I am now officially your new pastor and I couldn’t be happier. On Tuesday morning I arrived in the office and hit the ground running. I’ll confess that it feels a little like running alongside a moving train trying to jump on. Getting the sermon recorded and ready to go by Wednesday changes up my weekly ritual of reading, praying, and writing. I will adjust and get it done, but---just a head’s up---it may be a little rough for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, these next few weeks in which my learning curve will be its steepest is also a very important time of year in the church calendar--Advent/Christmas. It's the season of church traditions and rituals that are deeply lodged in our memories. In normal years, the campus would be buzzing with activity--Christmas teas, decorations, choir rehearsals, mission events, youth gatherings. It's hard to imagine how we might replicate what is so memorable about this time of year for online viewing or Zoom meetings.

And yet, we will adjust and get it done. I cannot tell you how (because I don’t know yet) but I have faith that the Spirit will provide a meaningful experience for us this season, despite a pastoral transition in the middle of a pandemic. The Spirit will provide, not for the sake of our comfortable rituals, but as a reflection of a reality that transcends our present circumstances. So, stay tuned! The Spirit is stirring! God is speaking an ancient truth to us in a new way.

2nd Advent Candle Lighting

This Sunday, December 6th, is the 2nd Sunday in Advent. Please join us this Sunday as Mona Wise & Michelle Hertig light our traditional 2nd Advent candle.

We have received a few orders for poinsettias. We will continue to receive orders until next week. Thank you.

To order poinsettias: on or before December 10th, please call, email, or leave a message with the church secretary, Nancy Boger, at, indicating how many poinsettias you would like to order.

Then please mail your check payable to Ariel Bowers to the church office at 4575 Auhay Dr., Santa Barbara CA 93110. The cost is $5 per poinsettia. Include the number of poinsettias ordering and to whom "in honor of" or "in memory of" the poinsettia is for.

In lieu of a physical, paper church bulletin, these remembrances will be typed out in the weekly Sunday email before Christmas.

Poinsettias will be available to pickup from the Sanctuary after December 15th during normal office hours Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00am to 2:00pm, or during Vesper service on December 24th.

Thank you!

Ariel Bowers
