Africa Day – a Learning Opportunity |
|
|
|
Teacher, students and parents at the Polytechnic School ADPP Zango celebrated Africa Day with a festival of African countries. Each class studied and presented their chosen country, and invited parents to attend as well as to form a jury. Everyone learned about Angola, DRC, Zambia, Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Guinea Bissau, Namibia and Mozambique, after which the jury selected the three best presentations.

The Many Facets of STEM Education |

As part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths project, engineers from ExxonMobil explained about oil refining and the many uses of oil. They visited teacher training schools in all of the clusters in the project, including the teacher training schools Marconi, Dom Bosco, Mutu and ADPP Luanda.

Keeping Covid at Bay |
|
ADPP Polytechnics in Luanda are organising vaccination campaigns for students and staff as part of the constant vigilance regarding the virus and sustained prevention measures. In Zango, the school collaborated with health workers to ensure everyone had the appropriate dose, whether the first, second, or booster.

All United for Primary Education in rural communities! |
|

|
Final year students in long-term teaching practice from the ADPP Teacher Training School in Uíge have been running community preschool as part of the government’s “TUPPI” (All United for Primary Education) project. They received a visit from an assessor from the Ministry of Education, together with representatives of the Provincial Education, Health and Justice Departments, and Puri Administration. The Ministry was full of praise for the work being done.

Peer Educators at the Forefront |

|
HIV prevention among young people can be achieved when peers are in charge of spreading messages about the disease. In Benguela and Cuanza Sul, members of the Girls Clubs (“Bancadas”) were trained as peer educators in Amboim, Quilenda and Conda. They gained a thorough understanding of the facts on HIV/AIDS, and of how to explain to their peers about the importance of prevention, testing and treatment.

Theatre on Malaria Prevention |
|
TCE Uíge organised an open day for pupils at Lunkulo Pedro school, as well as for members of the surrounding community. School Patrol Pupils performed a theatre play on malaria prevention, then demonstrated the correct use of mosquito nets.

Cabrais Health Centre, Benguela
Biopio Communal Administrator paid a visit to 11 de Março Health Centre in Catumbela as part of a meeting on developing a partnership and flow of communication in the field of community health, with particular reference to the HIV/TB project in Benguela and Cuanza Sul. The health centre was constructed in 2016/2017 as part of a broader USAID/ACEPA financed ADPP community health project in Cabrais that served thousands of people.

Local NGOs MWANA PWO, ASPC and ALPS are joining forces with ADPP on a community led monitoring project in four provinces: Huambo, Lunda Sul, Benguela and Cunene. The idea of the project is to improve HIV services at health centres through collaboration with communities and users of the services. In May, the Provincial Health Director of Lunda Sul, Dr Viegas, met with a representative of Mwana Pwo and ADPP at the start of the project. In Cunene, the Director of ASPC and the provincial ADPP leader met with members of the Provincial Health Department.

Agriculture & Environment |
|
|
|
|
After a successful start-up phase with introductions to authorities and planning, activities are starting in the “Greener Viana” project. Women and young people are the driving force behind the various components designed to make the local environment greener in urban districts of Estalagem and Zango, municipality of Viana. Improved charcoal burning stoves, collection and recycling of waste, giving second-hand clothes a new lease of life, and tree cultivation are key activities. Training and practical classes in stove production and sewing give participants vital skills. Residents’ Committees are collaborating with Environment Brigade Leaders in planning and organising actions. Young people are enrolling to attend courses to join the Environment Brigades.

At the FEPROMEFA fair in the Waku Kungo at the beginning of May, Governor Job Pedro Castelo Capapinha visited the Farmers Clubs Cuanza Sul stand, where the farmers displayed 9 different types of products. Club members explained about their experiences and how they were achieving good results. Members of Farmers Clubs Cuanza Sul also proudly exhibited the results of their hard work during the provincial fair in Quibala on 27 – 29 May. 12 municipalities in the province were represented at the fair.

Exchanges of Experiences |
|
Members of Farmers Clubs Luanda in Belas municipality met with the technicians from the Agrarian Development Institute for an exchange of experiences at Kididi and Cassumuna model field. These exchanges are important for the farmers and informative for the IDA.
|

|

Integrated Community Development |
|
|
|
|
Participants in literacy classes in Gambos, Huíla, sat end of Module 1 tests during the month of May. Equivalent to 2nd grade level, the participants will continue with Module 2, which brings them to 4th grade level over the space of 9 months. The majority of learners are women, so it is not unusual to see young children accompanying their mothers.
|

Dams Allow Productive Farming |
|
The rehabilitated water points in Oncocua mean agricultural production is on a better footing and the farmers can look forward to a good harvest at the end of the season.
|
|
|
|
|
|
A Promising Future |
|
Participants on the sewing course in Bibala welcomed representatives from partner ENI. They explained about their plans for the future and promised to make the most of their training. Time flew by with exchanges of information and explanations. The women demonstrated many of the items they had sewn, and they said their guests were more than welcome to return whenever they wanted.

|
7,200 litres/hour |
|
With much of Southern Angola facing continued drought, the good news in Quilemba, Huíla, was that the waterhole was still capable of pumping 7,200 litres per hour. The Water and Sanitation Group trained by the project carried out tests to check.
|
|
|
|
