It's been a very weird spring here in the Washington, D.C. area. Swinging from quite cold to quite hot with little warning is not usually a feature of springtime weather here, but it kind of reminds me of my childhood home further north. But! This year we have spring with bonus extra insects! Whee.
Yes, you may have heard about the "Brood X" cicadas - those bugs with a 17-year life cycle. This is their year, and they're out to party. They're quite large, rather hideous, but otherwise utterly harmless. They don't bite, they don't eat anything, they don't do much except molt, crawl, sometimes fly with rather astonishing ineptitude, make a ton of noise, and have sex. They'll shortly all die off, leaving their children to crawl back underground and hibernate for another 17 years.
In happier (and considerably less buggy) news, I'd forgotten to tell you about something very cool that happened all the way on the other side of the world! Reader Tamara Amsdt of Australia has started decorating things like bags and shoes with art from some of her favorite books and she did a pair of book shoes based on the cover artwork from Method Acting! As an author, there are some funky things you dream about happening. Big stuff like hitting a bestseller list and small stuff like someone doing fan art of your characters. I never once in my life considered book shoes, but how cool? (Photos in the tweet below).
