It’s Christmas time! And as we celebrate the holiday season we look at key biblical figures who impacted the world through the divine birth of Jesus and beyond! This morning, we start with Joseph, the “earthly father” of Jesus.
Joseph was the husband of Mary the mother of Jesus but he was not the biological father of Jesus. Matthew 1:18 explains…“This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.”
After discovering Mary was expecting, Joseph was faced with a dilemma. He thought of divorcing her. Scripture says, however, that the angel of the Lord intervened. Matthew 1:19-20 states…”Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”
The angel also told Joseph that the name of the Son would be Jesus. Joseph was further informed that this Child would be the Savior of the people of Israel. Matthew 1:21-23 says, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us).
Joseph immediately obeyed the commandment of the angel of the Lord. Matthew 1:24-25 explains…“When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.”
To God Be The Glory for Joseph, the obedient, earthly father of Jesus! Each and every time the Lord called upon him to do something, Joseph immediately obeyed. Joseph led his family by following God. He didn't ask questions. He didn't need the entire plan laid out for him to study in detail. And although he wasn't sure where God was taking him, he held his family close, trusting and obeying that God’s ways were good. This unquestioned obedience of Joseph is a lesson for us all!

Children Christmas Tree Trimming
It’s Starting To Look A lot Like Christmas!
As many rushed to
purchase gifts on Black Friday, members of our congregation turned
their minds to the birth of our Savior, Jesus the Christ. Who is
this Jesus? HE is the light of the world! (John 8:12) Jesus reminded
his disciples that they should also be light! (Matthew 5:14)
We’ll walk in the light, beautiful light, come where the dew
drops of mercy shine bright. Shine all around us by day and by night.
Jesus the Light of the World!
Yes! Jesus the
Light of the World could be the theme song for our 2024 Christmas
decorations. Sister Beverly Horton carried the torch for the weekend
of decorating. A compassionate leader, she provided lunch. Lunch was
food for the body as young and “older” feasted on love and
laughter.
As you make your
way through our church home, embrace the light. Jesus is the light
of the world. As His disciples, HPGMBC is the light on the Hill.

Every holiday season brings an opportunity to spend quality time at home with loved ones. While some parents worry that time away from school might hinder their child's learning progress, most teachers emphasize the importance of rest and relaxation during breaks. Children need time to recharge and reset before diving back into their studies.
However, this doesn't mean you can't incorporate fun and engaging activities that stimulate their minds and keep them learning throughout the holidays. Here are 10 simple yet effective ways to foster learning and growth during the festive season:
3. Thought-provoking Discussions About Beloved Holiday Stories and Movies
Many families have cherished holiday films and stories that become annual traditions. Engage your child in meaningful conversations about these beloved works.
- Ask open-ended questions: Inquire about their favorite characters, plot points, and themes.
- Encourage critical thinking: Ask them to analyze the story's message, compare and contrast different versions, and express their opinions.
- Keep it casual: Avoid turning the discussion into a formal book report; let it flow naturally and organically.
4. Game Night: Unveiling the Educational Side of Family Fun
Family game nights offer a blend of entertainment, learning, and social interaction. Choose games that promote problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork.
- Scrabble: Enhance spelling, vocabulary, and literacy skills.
- Yahtzee: Practice addition, multiplication, and probability.
- Monopoly: Develop money management, arithmetic, and problem-solving strategies.
- Memory, Go Fish, and other matching games: Strengthen memory and cognitive skills, particularly short-term item retrieval.

BED BUGS
Here are some tips for dealing with bed bugs:
Prevention
Keep your home clean and free of clutter, especially in your bedroom. Vacuum regularly, including mattresses, box springs, furniture, and carpets. You can also use a mattress and box spring cover, and seal cracks and crevices in your home.
Inspection
Check for bed bugs and bites regularly. You can use a flashlight to look in dark areas like behind the headboard and under the bed. Look for dark rust-colored spots on mattresses and sheets.
Treatment
If you have an infestation, you can try these methods:
Wash bedding: Wash bedding and clothing in hot water and dry on high heat.
Vacuum mattresses: Vacuum mattresses, seal them in plastic, and leave them outside in the sun.
Use a pesticide: Spray common hiding spots with a surface pesticide that's registered to control bed bugs. Follow the label directions carefully.
Use a home remedy: Sprinkle baking soda on areas where you think bed bugs are, let it sit for a week, and then vacuum. Repeat until there are no more bugs or eggs.
Call a professional
If you can't get rid of the bed bugs on your own, you can call a professional exterminator.

FLU
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.
RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.
RSV shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a RSV vaccination.
COVID-19
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.
The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
Both COVID vaccines and Booster COVID vaccines are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding COVID vaccinations.
