Voting Has Begun
by Janet Singer, CGB Political Director
We’re in the home stretch. For those of you still thinking that Election Day is 6 weeks away, I’ve got news for you. Early voting has begun. In 2020, 69% of voters voted early, and they were disproportionately Democratic voters, so we need to be talking to these voters and getting out the vote now.
Getting out the early vote has numerous advantages.
1. We’re ahead in the Senate polls now and any early vote is like money in the bank. No crazy scandal, war, or return to $5/gal gas can change a vote that’s already been cast.
2. When people vote early, campaigns can widen the net of voters to contact and get to the polls, because campaigns don’t have to contact a voter who has voted.
3. We create a social norm of early voting, which gets more people to vote early and so on.
4. If we vote early, we can be free to spend Election Day being a poll observer or making sure your cousin in Georgia made it to the polls.
So that’s why we’ve targeted our canvassing efforts on the early vote period. I was having a hard time deciding whether to canvass in Atlanta Georgia or Durham North Carolina, so I’ve decided to do both. Come join me! We also have a group going to Milwaukee WI and another to Phoenix AZ. Sign up here. And, don’t forget the day trips to NH and PA. So far we’ve been able to arrange a lot of free housing with CGB members in our target states. If you’ve never canvassed, we’ll help you and pair you with an experienced canvasser.
