Last night (Wednesday 22nd), our Image Steward Richard mentioned that EDI images for the March evaluation were due in by 11.59 that night.
There was an audilbe, collective gasp from many of the members present who assumed that the old system of breaking up the print and EDI deadlines into two different dates was still in force.
It wasn't, but Richard has extended the deadline (this month only) for those people who were unaware of the changes.
Thanks Richard.

National
Night, well done everybody, thanks to Richard and Bec for the
technical set up, and thanks to members that took on the role of
judging.
This type of judging is pretty much exactly the way
āNationalsā such as Warragul, APS, and Pakenham National EDIs are
judged.
Our judges last night were pretty lenient in some cases,
there is always a very important reminder when entering āNationalsā,
or any other comp for that matter, āREAD THE RULES/DEFINITIONSā
then read
them again. This includes deadlines, please people.
When entering a National you normally have to pay per entry, you
donāt want to blow your money on an entry that is basically
disqualified. When you see photographers listed such as Joe Blogs
MAPS,AAPS , they generally earn those letters after their name by
entering Nationals and Internationals. Some great entries last night.

KPS has officially cut all ties with the Commonwealth Bank with the closing of our old Commonwealth Bank accounts this week.
This brings to a close the always seemingly difficult interactions with the Commonwealth Bank much to the relief of the KPS financial team (especially Peter Collens) who had to deal with them.
Please check your bank account for payees and remove any reference to KPS/Commonwealth Bank.
KPS now banks with Bendigo Bank and our account details are available on our website HERE

Outing Sunday February 26th
|
|
|
|
First
outing for 2023 Sunday 26th
Feb, Docklands Area.
You can drive to dockland or catch a train to
Southern Cross; however, busses will be replacing trains on part of
the Lilydale/Belgrave lines in Feb / Mar so allow a bit more time if
using the train.
We will meet at 10 oāclock, around the āCow up
the Treeā. Then take a wander around the docklands area, water
features, boats, architecture etc.
For lens wide may be more useful
than long, a tripod whilst always good will probably not be necessary
unless you are planning some slow shutter work, eg. using ND filters.

If members want to car pool, please post on our Members Only Facebook Group to offer/seek a lift to make your own arrangements.

Myuna Wetlands near Floriana Avenue Doveton
Short walk down Floriana to the wetland area. Lyn and I went there Monday 20th, and there were squillions of bats. You can get within just a few metres of them. (A hat may be useful). There were also lots of water birds, especially ducks. A longish lens would be useful. There is no coffee shop nearby. It would be easy to pop back to the car and pick up your thermos then sit by and watch the birds. Thanks Bill S for your suggestion for this outing.
If you use What3Words for finding locations (and you really should try it) this is the reference: https://w3w.co/blocks.rocketin...
Otherwise . . . From Boronia head South down Stud road, go over the Freeway and turn left at Heatherton Road. Down Heatherton Road over the Freeway again, then Right turn into Power Road. Down Power Road, over the Freeway once again, right turn (straight after crossing the Freeway) into Botanical Grv. (Serbian Club is on the corner). Along Botanical to Cootamundra. Right turn into Cootamundra. Park in Cootamundra near Floriana. Avoid parking in Floriana as it is a dead -end street and the locals wont love us if we clog up the street.

Box Hill Camera Market 2023
|
|
|
|
Treasurer Peter Collens has proposed that KPS again takes a stall at the Box HIll Camera Market this year.
The market has provided KPS with much needed funds (our membership fees do not cover our expenses, so we need to fundraise to keep the club financially viable).
If you have old gear that you no longer want and are willing to donate to KPS for our market stall we would sincerely appreciate your gesture. Partiicularly popular are compact film cameras in working condition.
See Peter C for details (or to give him your old equipment). Peter is also amenable to selling more valuable items on consignment, with the club taking a cut of the proceeds for saving you the hassle of having to sell it yourself.
|
|
|
|
Peter Knight has graciously agreed to run his photography course to benefit KPS again in 2023.
Details will be forthcoming but if previous years are any indication, the course will run over 5 or 6 Saturday afternoons and be remarkable value for the aspiring photographer.
Peter generously donates his time and expertise as this course is another fundraising venture for KPS, for as mentioned above, our fees do not cover our running costs.

A really simple tip this week,
I much prefer to edit with a medium grey background for my images but always change to a "Proof Margin" where the background is white.
The first image shows my editing screen with its medum grey background that I find easier to look at. Your image editing program will likely give you a choice of tones from white to black.
|
|
|
|
Once I think I have finished editing I swap to my white background "Proof Margin" screen to re-evaluate my choices.
I often end up lightening my images once they are seen against a white background to simulate a large white border or matt.
It is definitely worth doing, particularly if you are making prints yourself or are having them made for you.
|
|
|
|
Try it.
I am sure you too, will see a difference in the perceived brightness of your image.
NoelB
|
|
|
|
Is this what your editing screen and environment looks like?
If so, this is very much sub-optimal.
Why?
- To start off, it's a laptop. Not ideal for imaging work as it is only an sRGB screen, it's small (1920 pixels wide) and it needs to be viewed from completely straight on to see what it is producing. It's probably a TN screen, not the preferred IPS type (Google the difference).
- Even though this laptop has a matte finish screen (much better for imaging work than a glossy screen) light still reflects from it.
- The screen itself is crowded with distracting elements
- The background is way too bright, as is the editing environment.
Ths setup below is much better for getting the best out of your images.
|
|
|
|
Here we have reasonable size monitor (27") which is an IPS screen from Eizo and covers 99% of the RGB colour space, it is fitted with a hood to keep unwanted light from the matte screen and the screen is the brightest object in view.
Ideally the background should be a blank wall, painted a neutral grey with no distractions (but even I'm not that keen). The working environment should have subdued lighting at about 5000k (colour temperature), that does not shine on the screen and the light level ought to be low enough so that you can just read something (as a rough rule of thumb).
There is a really good article from Imagescience on your working environment HERE There are even paint formulas if you are keen enough to paint your room neutral grey!

Software articles on fstoppers.com |
|
fstoppers have been running a series of articles on how various software packages for image editing perform.
Most people default to Lightroom because it is very competent and is a bit of a one stop package that has a lot of functions (whether most people use them is another matter). I happily used Lightroom for many years but not any longer as another program plays better with my Fujifilm files.
According to fstoppers, there are other brands of cameras that may benefit from software other than Lightroom. Is yours amongst them?

Many KPS members will remember Jaime Murcia, not only from a series of laneways excursions but from his presentations to a KPS Bootcamp. Jaime was a lovely bloke and a great photographer who sadly died far too young in 2021.
Ten Bag Press has commissioned an exclusive, short run book to commemorate Jaime and his work.
Please consider purchasing a copy (Warning: It's not cheap).
From Ten Bag Press:
JAIME MURCIA RETROSPECTIVE
Our great friend Jaime Murcia, who was part of the photography team on our best-selling books The Mallee and The Wimmera, died in 2021 after a long illness.
Jaime was a wonderful person and a very talented photographer. He travelled around Australia and around the world capturing scenes from tiny towns in regional Victoria to the cities and countryside in Spain where he had family ties.
Jaime Murcia Retrospective celebrates his remarkable collection of work. The book will cement Jaimeās legacy as an Australian photographer whose work was both artistic and important.
Only 100 copies of the book are being produced. In keeping with Jaimeās artistic qualities, the book is being printed and hand-bound in Melbourne.
All profits from sales of the book will be donated to a charity of the Murcia familyās choosing.

Hiring a studio is likely not something that most photographers would consider doing but if you are into portrait photography, perhaps you should condier it.
Focal Point Gallery in North Geelong has a studio for hire for only $50.00 per hour which includes just about everything required apart from a model. If three people got together you could hire a studio for a few hours and practice your lighting/photography skills in a controlled environment.
Focal point is a vibrant photography centric business in North Geelong who publish a newsletter lettng people know what is happening with the gallery and/or the darkroom for hire.

Important.
Pretty
soon KPS will need to put together 15 Prints and 15 EDIs to represent
KPS in the interclub. (we will probably need to have these ready by
the VAPS Mid- Year meeting on March 26th.).
The
process of entering the images:-
You can
submit images for selection via VP just like entering an Image
Evaluation event.
-
We need
EDIs and Prints.
-
We need
quite a few images to choose from, as we probably will be allowed 1
EDI per member and 1 print per member.
-
We put
together a āvolunteerā
selection panel.
-
Select
the images.
-
Upload
the EDIs and deliver the prints.
Return
all images to members. So
get those images together NOW, be ready when needed.
There
will be more on the VAPS Convention soon. We hope to have a good KPS
contingent make this weekend away a really good outing. Colac is not
too far away. To attend the Convention you need to register and pay
on the VAPS website. There are options, 1 day, 2 day, dinner, special
events etc. with different costs. We would need to organize
accommodation either as a club or as individuals, or in groups. The
convention is 17-18 June.
VAPS.
(Victorian Association of Photographic Societies).
Convention
2023 is at Colac.
From
VAPS website:- We also hold an annual Interclub competition where
camera clubs compete to receive the highest ranking out of all camera
clubs. The 2023
Annual Convention in Colac will
commence on Friday 16th June 2023 and sessions will be held at the
Colac Otway Performing Arts & Cultural Centre on 17-18th
June 2023. For
