Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Ezra: Faith and Action Preacher”
Aim: Contrast the peoples need for repentance with their joyful response to God’s word, Believe that God’s truth is eternal, and Grow in determination to serve God in our community and beyond.
Background: Ezra 9-10
Bible Lesson: Ezra 10:1-12
Memory Verses:
“And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.” Ezra 10:10-11 KJV
Some Highlights:
- A remnant of the exiles from the southern kingdom, Judah and Benjamin, had been permitted to return home to rebuild the Temple of God which had been destroyed when the Babylonians invaded their land and carried them away into captivity. Ezra led the second group of exiles back to their homeland. Ezra was a priest, one who interceded between man and God. The Persians had overthrown the Babylonians and God moved through the Persian ruler to allow a remnant of Israel to return to their homeland. In Ezra chapter 9, Ezra is informed of the sins of the people. Some of the men, including some of the priests had intermarried with the women of the land that God had given to them to possess. God had forbidden Israel to intermarry with the women of the land. This was not to preserve racial purity, but to prevent them from being drawn into the worship of idol gods as practiced by the people of the land. (Deuteronomy 7:3,4) Ezra’s response to the news of this great sin was to tear his clothes, weep, and to lay prostrate before God.
- Our Study opens with Ezra lying face down in front of the Temple of God praying, weeping and making confession to God because of this great sin of the exiled men intermarrying with pagan women of the land. His emotions were so dramatic that the people ( men, women, and children) of Israel gathered behind him and began to weep bitterly as well.
- Shecaniah, a man from the assembly, speaks up and confesses that the people had been unfaithful to God and acknowledges that they had married the pagan women of the land; however, he stated a belief that there was still hope for Israel. He further stated that there needed to be a renewal on their part to the Covenant with God which they had broken. He suggested that they divorce their pagan wives and send them away with their children. In addition, they would follow Ezra’s advice and guidance in getting back in line with God’s Law and His Commands. He called upon Ezra to lead them back to the path of righteousness.
- Ezra arose and sought commitment from the leaders of the priest and the Levites and all of the people to swear to accept Shecaniah’s declaration. All the people swore with a solemn oath to accept.
- Ezra continued to mourn the sins of the people. He fasted, drinking and eating nothing. He was sorrowful because the exiles had been unfaithful while God had been so gracious and faithful to them.
- A proclamation was issued that all the exiles would assemble in Jerusalem at a set time in three days, which would allow time for those living some distance away to travel to Jerusalem. Violators of the proclamation would forfeit their property and be expelled from the community.
- On a cold, rainy day the people of Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem as proclaimed. They all sat trembling in front of the Temple of God because of the seriousness of the matter being addressed and because of the inclimate weather.
- Ezra restated the sin of the men marrying pagan women in violation of God’s Law and His Commandment. He exhorted the people to confess their sins and to take action by separating themselves from the pagan customs of the people of the land and from the pagan women.
- With one voice, the people acknowledged their sins and vowed to do as Ezra had said.
- In the remainder of Ezra Chapter 10, actions are taken to follow through on their commitment and to do as they had vowed, even though this was a very difficult and emotionally stressful action.
Take Aways:
- We must seek and obey God’s Will for our lives.
- When we violate or disobey God’s Will, we must confess our sins, seek forgiveness, and take action to rectify our behavior.
- God is loving and forgiving. He knows our weaknesses and our limitations. No situation is really hopeless. We can change our ways and God can bring restoration.
Bible Verses to Keep in Mind:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 KJV
“Like as a father pitieth [his] children, [so] the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we [are] dust.” Psalms 103:13-14 KJV
“For thou, Lord, [art] good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.” Psalms 86:5 KJV
“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16 KJV

Tennessee State University (TSU) and Meharry Medical College, two historically Black academic institutions in Nashville, today announced a new partnership focused on establishing a pipeline of African-American doctors and dentists who will provide essential care to underserved communities. The historic agreement will recruit, select and support the medical education of a cadre of African American students who are interested in becoming physicians or dentists. The overriding goal is to increase the number of African American trained health care providers who will stay and work in minority communities that have the greatest burden of health care needs. The accelerated program seeks to reduce the amount of time it takes students to enter medical school. The traditional four-year Bachelor of Science degree will become a three-year program—students will spend three years pre-med at TSU before going on to study medicine or dentistry at Meharry. The result is total completion in seven years, instead of the customary eight years. Students participating in the pathways program will be those with the highest academic preparation and quality. Requirements for admission will be based on a 3.5 grade point average, a score of 1300 on the SAT (two components) or a 29 on the ACT. Mentoring, tutoring and coaching will be crosscutting elements of the program, as will be career and professional guidance for all students involved. 505 New COVID-19 Cases & 18 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for
April 10, 2021
(22 New Cases in Fayette County)
As millions receive the COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people continues as a high priority for the Biden Administration with July 4th as a milestone objective for families whose members have been fully vaccinated to have small celebration gatherings. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.
