Amazing African American Filmmakers |
|
|
|
|
Today
we salute history making African American filmmakers who have worked
to make sure black stories are part of the American movie industry.
Oscar
Micheaux
-
Oscar
Micheaux was an author, film director and independent producer of
more than 44 films.
-
Although
the Lincoln Motion Picture Company was the first movie company owned
and controlled by black filmmakers, Micheaux is regarded as the
first major African-American feature filmmaker.
-
A
prominent creator of race films, he produced both silent and sound
movies.
-
Micheaux's
films were made during a time of great change in the
African-American community.
-
He
sought to create films that featured contemporary black life…Films
that would counter negative portrayals of African Americans.
-
Micheaux
has been described as "the most successful African-American
filmmaker of the first half of the 20th century".
Jordan
Peele
-
Jordan
Peele is an actor, comedian and filmmaker
-
He’s
known for his early work in sketch comedy, starring in numerous
shows including Mad TV and Key and Peele.
-
Later
in his career, he transitioned to other genres as a writer and
director.
-
In
2017 he made his directorial debut, with the horror film “Get
Out!”
-
It
was a critical box office success, and he received numerous
accolades, including the Academy Award for best original screenplay,
as well as an Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director.
-
He
also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture for
producing Spike Lee’s drama “Blackkklansman.”
-
His
voice is also featured in the animated films “Captain Underpants”
and “Toy Story”.
-
Peele
continues producing box office hits and has established his own film
and television production company.

He
was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential people in
the world.
Ava
DuVernay
-
Ava
DuVernay is a filmmaker and former film publicist. She is the
recipient of a Primetime Emmy Award, an NAACP Image Award, and a
BAFTA Film and TV Award.

DuVernay
became the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Golden
Globe Award for Best Director, and an Academy Award for Best Picture
for her work on Selma, a biopic about Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
-
She
also received an Academy Award-nomination for the Netflix
documentary “Thirteenth” as well as an Academy Award nomination
for the Disney fantasy film “A Wrinkle in Time “ which made

her
the first African-American woman to direct a film with a budget of
over $100 million dollars.

In
another history making first, DuVernay became the first black woman
to win the directing award in the U.S. dramatic competition at the
2012 Sundance Film Festival for her feature film “Middle of
Nowhere”.

Ava
DuVernay was also named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most
Influential people in the world.
