Reducing MCs - Update 2

Dear HR Practitioners,

Appreciate if you could share some of your strategies on how to reduce absenteeism at your organization.

We understand people could get sick and may have conditions. However, we had some instances where an employee would take MC before or after their annual leave.

Thank you.

Just to share that we make it a point for them to apply through the system upon returning back to work and the original MC has to be submitted to their managers for endorsement before the staff pass it to HR dept. And we tried to pre-amp department managers to always prompt and further questions on it and to encourage them to have good healthy lifestyle. with an extra step to get their MC to be endorsed, it seems to somehow keep the situation in control and our MC rate has since reduced.

How long will your company tolerates high absenteeism employee’s behaviour? It is not the attitude of an individual over work that matters most.

We follow the basic process:

· Counselling and reiterates that individual performance bonus and incentives will be affected;

· Showed evidence of leave pattern and how it impacted team/dept KPIs;

· Agreed fixed period [2-3 months] of monitoring of employee’s performance;

· Record each session with employee and employee to acknowledge;

· issuance of warning letters and termination.

We implemented zero sick leave half yearly and rewarded with benefit dollars of $100 to redeem for health products, supplements etc.

Our Company works well till to-date that every of our staffs reserve a sum of S$300-400 to each yearly as Medical Benefit. This sum is used for consultation whenever they are unwell. Receipt and Mc will submit back to HR the next day to record and reimburse during the pay day. Balance of medical sum will progressive being reduce and reflect on the payslip. However, if the medical benefit is not been used as well Mcs has not taken, the full entitlement will reimburse during end of the year. And those employee has been used and balance will automatically waived off.

We reward staff with no MCs taken for the year by giving them additional bonus.
