From the Director
May is Older Americans Month!
Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Older adults play vital, positive roles in our community. Just as every person is unique, so too is how they age and how they choose to do it – and there is no “right” way. That’s why the theme for Older Americans Month (OAM) 2022 is Age My Way.
Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the celebration of OAM. This year’s theme focuses on how older adults can age in their communities, living independently for as long as possible and participating in ways they choose.
While Age My Way will look different for each person, here are common things everyone can consider:
- Planning: Think about what you will need and want in the future, from home and community-based services to community activities that interest you.
- Engagement: Remain involved and contribute to your community through work, volunteer, and/or civic participation opportunities.
- Access: Make home improvements and modifications, use assistive technologies, and customize supports to help you better age in place.
- Connection: Maintain social activities and relationships to combat social isolation and stay connected to your community.
Diverse communities are strong communities. Ensuring that older adults remain involved and included in our communities for as long as possible benefits everyone. Your participation in NEXT Village strengthens our community as the Older American’s Act intended. If NEXT can support you as you age in place, please let us know. Thank you!
Jacqueline and the Team at NEXT Village SF

Camille's Volunteer Corner
Meet Julie!
I love to volunteer; I also spend my time helping the Girl Scouts, Food Bank, Family House, Helping Hands, and World Central Kitchen.
I have met some wonderful people and I enjoy hearing how they grew up in San Francisco, or how they ended up here. I am so glad to be a part of this wonderful organization where I can offer help and connect with seniors I might not have the chance to meet otherwise.
About me: I moved from the East Bay to San Francisco in 1988 after college. I enjoy hiking, movies, reading and traveling with my family. We are tackling all the staircases of San Francisco and really are seeing some wonderful things including spectacular views, awesome architecture, hidden gardens and cute neighborhoods.
If you need help from any of the amazing NEXT Village volunteers like Julie, contact our Volunteer Coordinator Camille at 415-574-0156 or Camille@nextvillagesf.org

SF's Barbary Coast History: from the Dancing Heifer to Historic District
The Barbary Coast was born during the Gold Rush of 1849 in areas of what is now Chinatown, North Beach and Jackson Square. Join us to learn the history of this historic area that was the city's first commercial district; then SF's first red-light district; and now is a stylish officially designated double landmark district!
Catherine Accardi will tell us what made Terrific Street so terrific and share tales of some of the rather unique performing ladies of the Barbary Coast, like the Galloping Cow, the Dancing Heifer, and the Little Lost Chicken. Our journey will be illustrated with historic images punctuated with a dazzling array of factual accounts and shockingly saucy tales as Catherine guides us from the district's historical past through its successful transformation to the landmark it is today.
SF's Barbary Coast is part of the Jackson Square local and National Register Historic Districts. It contains the first and only remaining Gold Rush businesses and over 100 architecturally significant structures. Invite friends & neighbors who love SF History to register to join us for this enlightening event!

Friday, May 27 | 12-1:30 PM | Marina
Walking Group: Marina Green Loop
On this flat level loop walk, we'll walk along a bit of the SF Bay Trail to enjoy the views along the Bay. This will be a walk for exercise rather than history, however our location does have a history. Prior to the 1906 earthquake, the area was a tidal marsh. After the earthquake it was filled and was the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. It was also the first terminus of the US Transcontinental air mail route. Now it's a beautiful grassy area to relax, play and enjoy as we walk. Loop walk is approx. 1.5 miles, but you can go at your own pace and a longer or shorter distance. Meeting up instructions will be emailed after you register.

Warning: Callers are impersonating FTC Commissioner Noah Phillips
You’re minding your business and the phone rings. If you don’t screen and ignore it, you answer — and the caller says he’s Commissioner Noah Phillips from the FTC. (He’s not.) He gives you a badge number (it’s fake), says there’s a warrant for your arrest (there’s not), and demands that you pay up (nope). Click HERE for more.
