More live workshops, films and music events are being offered as the new rules on live entertainment settle in. Also, see below for listings for the first few events of what promises to be a packed weekend of blended live and virtual events, O:Pen (April 2nd-4th), organised by the newly relaunched Penang Arts Council.

A 2014 comedy-drama film written and directed by Wes Anderson, which explores tragedy, war, fascism, nostalgia, friendship, and loyalty. WORKSHOP - POTTERY, PLANTS & COFFEE, Tropical Spice Gardens, Teluk Bahang, Saturday 27th March 9am-1pm

Gather at K(an)opi Coffee, the TSG’s jungle cafe where a brand-new nursery is situated. Try your hand at wheel throwing and clay pinching with Clay.Pu or bring a plant or seed along to join in the plant exchange fun. Choose one plant from the TSG nursery in exchange for one plant/seed from you.

Freshly brewed coffee will be available for purchase throughout the morning and K(an)opi's signature masala kombucha will be served, on the house (while stocks last)!

Each wheel throwing session runs for 15 mins with a maximum capacity of 2 persons each time. For larger groups arriving together, other guests can remain at the clay pinching table until the wheels become available.

WORKSHOP - ECO-FRIENDLY ONLINE SHOPPING, Jetty 35, 35 Weld Quay, Saturday 27th March 9.30am-12pm

Lockdown has led to a drastic rise in online shopping and e-commerce, and has created a new problem - a huge increase in bubble wrap and cardboard boxes going into the landfill. A Yo Yo, the founder of the 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭, explains how to reuse and reduce packaging materials.

WRITING AND MOVEMENT WORKSHOP - LIVE FROM TROPICAL SPICE GARDENS, Online, Sunday 28th March 10am-11.30am

Weave words to life with Mislina Mustaffa and Aida Redza on this 2-day online workshop of writing and movement - this time, featuring live music. Trace the language of the body to bring more depth and life into your daily writings and thoughts.

This group class will start with movement to get everyone into a creative state, followed by a writing session led by Mislina. Finally, we will use somatic movement ideas to weave our words together into a simple choreography.

FILM - THE PIANO, The Screenery, 81 China St, Tuesday 30th March & Saturday 3rd April 7pm

1993 period drama film written and directed by Jane Campion and starring Holly Hunter. Set in the mid-19th century, the film focuses on a psychologically mute Scottish woman who travels to a remote part of New Zealand with her young daughter after her arranged marriage to a frontiersman.The Piano was a critical and commercial success, and in 1993, the film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making Jane Campion the first and only female director to ever receive this award. It won three Academy Awards out of eight total nominations in 1994.

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY - THE ALLEY CATS, Online, Sunday 4th April 2pm

During the late 70s through to late 90s, the Alleycats, a multi-ethnic musical band, successfully broke cultural and racial barriers in the Malaysian recording and performing music industry. Since then, other multi-ethnic musical groups have tried to attain the same level of impact in the Malaysian pop music industry but have fallen short. Why is this so and what is the effect of it? This research film documentary explores the untold stories of the band of brothers. Their love for music, relationships with their family and friends in a culturally rich environment, how they overcame the many ups and downs along the way and learned to stay true to what they loved best - making great music that cuts through all boundaries and enjoyed by all.

MUSIC - SOLOS FOR SPRING, E&O Macallister Ballroom, Sunday 4th April 5pm

The Penang Arts Council was founded in the 1950s and organised dozens of concerts, operas and art exhibitions until it went dormant in 2005. It was relaunched at the beginning of the year to help promote the arts in Penang, which are suffering as never before because of the pandemic. This first concert features some of the best singers and musicians in Penang performing solo repertoire, as for much of CMCO and MCO 2.0 rehearsing with other musicians was impossible. This is the first of a series of concerts to be held throughout the year.

SHORT FILM SUBMISSIONS - G-SHORT, Online, Until 11th April

G-Short will be a short film festival held as part of the George Town Festival 2021. G-Short wants to encourage local film-makers to create original films, in a 90 second format. Cash prizes for winners.

Of Malaysian Indian heritage and with a rural Australian upbringing, Shobana Anne was influenced by indigenous Australian art and modern western abstract art. In this exhibit, she responds to the beauty of nature, exploring it both at a microbiological level and with deconstructed organic shapes that represent her impressions of her experiences. For more information, click here.

KECIK-KECIK GROUP SHOW ARTIST CALL OUT, Online, Until March 31st

Penang Art District once again collaborates with Hin Bus Depot to bring Malaysian contemporary art to a wider audience by introducing a variety of affordable contemporary pieces to grow a strong culture of collecting Malaysian art. 

In light of the periodic Movement Control Order, this year, Kecik-Kecik will be conducted online for accessibility while keeping it safe for all artists and collectors.

Sattama is an artist from Sabah. Hin Bus Depot created an mixed exhibition of his sketches, prints, canvas works as well as wood works, but as the MCO forced Hin to close, the exhibition is now online here. All works are for sale.
