A month-long free festival of fun in Swindon town centre, organised by Swindon Borough Council, has delighted thousands of people with the biggest weekend of activities still to come.
The Summer at the Green events, located at Wharf Green, launched at the start of the month and will come to an end this bank holiday weekend (23 to 25 August).
Throughout the month, activities have included a pop-up cinema, pop-up skate park, circus workshops, bubble magic and more.
Feedback from those who have attended has been incredibly positive. One attendee said: “My boys had so much fun and I can’t even believe it’s free. So good to have a day out with the kids and I didn’t even get to hear ‘oh mummy we’re bored can we go back home’.”
Another added: “Great event, great to see a council put something nice on that kids can enjoy for free during these harsh economic times. Great to see attempts made to liven up a town centre.”
One visitor also highlighted the benefits of getting the kids out of the house, saying: “Great entertainment for kids and families that can’t afford to do something every day during the school holidays and don’t want to spend the summer in front of a screen playing games.”
This weekend, a pop-up planetarium, in association with Immersive Experiences, The National Literacy Trust, and the National Trust, will allow families to discover the wonder of space and our solar system.
Alongside the planetarium, there will also be a hands-on meteorite artefact, space suit dress-up, a photo area and the opportunity to experience space in VR.
Then, Bank Holiday Monday (25 August) will see a grand finale featuring vibrant musical performances and the hunt to find Swindon’s next town crier, with Swindon 105.5, Eastcott Studios, Billy and Louie, Swindon’s Elvis, Rhythmix Goa and Luna Face Painting.
Swindon Borough Council created the series of free events throughout the summer, with support from local community groups, businesses and organisations, to help draw footfall into the town centre and provide entertainment for all ages during the school holiday.
A pop-up park has also been in place throughout August for children to enjoy.
Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, said: “It’s so great to see so many people enjoying the amazing Summer at the Green events that we’ve put on over August.
“I’ve really enjoyed seeing everyone having fun and taking part in the various activities and events.
“A big thank you to all our partner organisations who helped to make the events possible and to our team at the Council for organising everything.
“There’s still one weekend left which is set to be just as amazing, so please join us if you can.”
You can find out more about the remaining Summer at the Green events on the Council’s dedicated webpage.
