Magical project
Holiday herb bundle
I wanted to tell you about the herb bundles I created because it was a fun, tactile project that was satisfying and lifted my spirits. There are only two ingredients: fir and rosemary cuttings. I used the cuttings from our holiday tree, which we'd left outside, where they remained preserved. If you live someplace with evergreens, you can often find branches on the ground, or you could even use your tree after the holiday. Cedar would also work in place of the fir. Here's what I did:
- Rinse the cuttings and let them dry on a towel.
- Pull them together to create a small bunch and kind of twist them around each other—this is not an exact science.
- Wind a piece of string to secure the bundle, top to bottom, and tie a knot. Leave a long enough bit of string to hang the bundle to dry for a few days. I cut a long piece of string and made a bundle on each end, so I could hang them over something (nail, closet rod, door).
These are festive looking as decoration, or you can use them for a natural type of incense. Simply hold one end and light the other, and gently blow out the flame, allowing the bundle to smoke. Cautionary words: Observe safety precautions of course—don't set it on anything flammable or leave it unattended. I hold something under it to catch the ashes, and carry it around the room. When it goes out, I place it on a dish or bowl until I'm sure it's fully out. It smells amazing!
