Hi ,
What is your favorite quote?
The one that really speaks to you. It's so powerful that it feels like it can change your perspective on negative events that happened in your life.
Well... I have one that literally helped me break free from the pain from my past that I want to share.
"You may not be able to forget, but you can forgive."
This is what someone told me about 20 years ago, and I still tell myself from time to time as a reminder.
Before I heard this quote, I was struggling with the pain caused by some people from the past.
What they said and did was so hurtful that I just wanted to forget about it and move on.
But no matter how hard I tried, I would get triggered by the memories.
And every time I thought about them, I felt victimized and experienced a sense of rage.
So when I heard the quote for the first time, it was like some finally gave me permission to be ok not to forget about what happened but instead learn to live with it peacefully.
It also made me realize that I was having a hard time letting go of my pain because I was trying to justify what happened and convince myself that it wasn't a big deal.
So I started acknowledging the pain instead of brushing it off and allowing myself to be ok to remember the memories from time to time.
I eventually found a way to live with them peacefully and even forgive the people who caused me the pain.
I would be lying if I said I don't get triggered by them anymore. But the difference is that now I use the quote as a reminder to feel empowered and be in control, so I don't get stuck in the rabbit hole.
I hope this email gives you a different perspective on something you have difficulty letting go and helps you learn how to make peace with it.
