Is Your Current and Pending … Current? |
|
Recently, there has been a push from many of MSU’s primary sponsors to ensure that committed effort is wholly and precisely reported. As a result, policy changes have occurred with each sponsor, and detailed instructions have been released from many of those sponsors to ensure that investigators exhaustively report any committed effort. MSU Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is now taking extra steps to monitor the reported current and pending effort information against current MSU system data and is pushing back regarding any discrepancies that they find. For sponsors that require Current & Pending documents at proposal stage, this makes it even more important to carefully complete your documents and provide ample time before the deadline date for thorough additional reviews by DER and OSP.
To help eliminate any last-minute submission delays resulting from Current and Pending discrepancies, you will want to ensure your pending effort information in MSU systems is accurate. There are two primary ways you can search MSU’s systems to ensure the system information is current and any proposals that are no longer pending, were updated accordingly. The first way you can search the status of your proposals is by completing a search using “All My Proposals” under the Researcher Tab in Kuali Coeus (KC). This tool will enable you to search by investigator and filter the data by a variety of elements including “status.” A second tool is by completing a search using “All Award Search” at OSP’s website. This tool will allow you to search for any currently funded projects. If you find any non-current information in either of these reports, please report it back to DER and we will get that correctly updated in the system.
Information regarding Current and Pending requirements for MSU’s primary sponsors can be found at Current and Pending / Other Support Requirements by Sponsor. Additionally, SciENcv is now available as a resource that enables you to quickly update the entries in your current and pending research portfolio and is exportable for sponsors such as NSF.
It is important to ensure that your Current and Pending document is accurate and matches MSU’s systems. DER is here to help. If you have additional questions regarding your Current and Pending document or have questions regarding current data found in MSU systems, please send an email to proposals@egr.msu.edu.

SUBJECT: NIH Application Forms and Other Support Updates
December 03, 2021
From:
Amanda Blank, Office of Sponsored Programs Manager
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) would like to highlight some upcoming updates from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) related to applications and Other Support.
For applications due on or after January 25, 2022:
- All individuals listed on the Key Person Profile form must have an eRA Commons ID prior to submission. This includes Other Significant Contributors and collaborators outside of MSU. If an MSU employee needs a Commons ID set up, please contact your OSP Proposal Team.
- NIH will be using FORMS-G. This is primarily to update their standard forms’ expiration dates and to change from the use of a DUNS number to the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) – see the summary of changes document for a comprehensive list of updates. Please ensure you have chosen FORMS-G when pulling in an opportunity to the System-to-System tab in KC.
- The new NIH biosketch format will now be required. As a reminder, these changes include:
- Section B renamed to ‘Positions, Scientific Appointments, and Honors’. NIH clarified that the following must be included in Section B:
- All positions and scientific appointments (domestic and non-domestic), including:
- Affiliations with non-domestic entities or governments
- Titled academic, professional, or institutional appointments
- Whether or not remuneration is received
- Regardless of full-time, part-time, or voluntary
- Including adjunct, visiting, or honorary
- Section D removed from the non-Fellowship Biosketch. Details on ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years may be included in the personal statement, Section A.
- Section D on the Fellowship Biosketch is updated to remove ‘Research Support’
- The new Biosketch format is currently available in SciENcv.
Also beginning January 25, 2022, the new Other Support format will be required.
- The new format has been reorganized to separate Project/Proposal support from In-Kind support
- A signature block is added for the Program Director/Principal Investigator or Other Senior/Key Personnel to certify to its accuracy. NIH will not accept wet signatures, only electronic. Do NOT scan signatures.
- For submissions that include non-domestic activities and resources, senior/key personnel are required to submit copies of contracts, grants, or any other agreement specific to their non-domestic appointments, affiliations and/or employment with a non-domestic institution. All supporting documents must be in English and included as part of the Other Support submission. It is the PI/department/college’s responsibility to translate supporting documentation to English. NIH has confirmed that they will accept machine translations (e.g., Google Translate). More information for this requirement is forthcoming.
- The new Other Support format will be available in SciENcv
in FY 2022.
Resources
OSP has put together the following resources for these changes:
NIH has also created websites devoted to Other Support and the Biosketch. These websites include the new formats, instructions, samples, and FAQ’s.
We will continue to provide resources and update you on any changes related to these new requirements. If you have questions related to applications or JIT, please contact your OSP Proposal Team. For questions related to NIH progress reports (i.e., RPPR), please contact the CGA Cash Management group.

Spartans in the driver’s seat: The future of autonomous vehicles
|
|
At Michigan State University, researchers are accelerating the future of driving by making autonomous vehicles safer under any road or weather conditions.
Integrating different technologies and using multimodal sensor fusion, they are leading innovation that allows autonomous vehicles to perceive the environment in challenging conditions like snow, heavy rain and fog and react appropriately.
“That's one critical aspect of what we are doing that's differentiating MSU from other research groups,” says Hayder Radha, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the Connected and Autonomous Networked Vehicles for Active Safety {CANVAS) program at MSU. “The immediate impact of what we’re doing is really achieving a high level of safety. It's very well known that more than 90% of fatalities that happen due to accidents and crashes on the road are due to human errors. First and foremost, autonomous vehicles will be saving lives.” …
