As many of you know, I’ve been trying for a while now to find a way to get books into prisons. It’s proven to be a rather convoluted, challenging process. One, the books have to come from the publisher directly, which made previous efforts destined to fail.
Until I latched onto Square Tire ©. The original plan was to take ST and turn it into an indie publishing house, putting out the work of other authors like me. But the best laid plans and all that. I’m not the only author published by the house, but it’s nowhere near as big as I’d hoped to have grown it. Mostly because I spend so much time writing new books! At any given point, I am either writing, editing, proofing, or promoting one to four books. Doesn’t leave a lot of time to launch a publishing house.
But one of the perks has been that, yes, as a publisher, I am now allowed to deliver books, in person, to the librarian at San Quentin. Last week. I brought up 25 books, and the guy was beyond thrilled, super appreciative, and said anytime I have more books to donate, he’s glad to take them.
Many of you have asked how you can donate to the cause, which I’ve named “Reading Is a Right.” And the answer just got a lot easier. Send a copy of your new book to me, and I will pack it up with others for my next run across the Richmond Bridge to San Quentin, where I will deliver them, personally. If interested, write me at joe@joeclifford.com, and I’ll explain how.
