August is the Anniversary of the Suffragettes |
6/14/22 - William Morrow - $16.99
New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini returns with The Women’s March, an enthralling historical novel of the women’s suffrage movement inspired by three courageous women who bravely risked their lives and liberty in the fight to win the vote.
Twenty-five-year-old Alice Paul returns to her native New Jersey after several years on the front lines of the suffrage movement in Great Britain. Weakened from imprisonment and hunger strikes, she is nevertheless determined to invigorate the stagnant suffrage movement in her homeland. Nine states have already granted women voting rights, but only a constitutional amendment will secure the vote for all.
To inspire support for the campaign, Alice organizes a magnificent procession down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, the day before the inauguration of President-elect Woodrow Wilson, a firm antisuffragist.
Joining the march is thirty-nine-year-old New Yorker Maud Malone, librarian and advocate for women’s and workers’ rights. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Maud has acquired a reputation—and a criminal record—for interrupting politicians’ speeches with pointed questions they’d rather ignore.
Civil rights activist and journalist Ida B. Wells-Barnett resolves that women of color must also be included in the march—and the proposed amendment. Born into slavery in Mississippi, Ida worries that white suffragists may exclude Black women if it serves their own interests.
On March 3, 1913, the glorious march commences, but negligent police allow vast crowds of belligerent men to block the parade route—jeering, shouting threats, assaulting the marchers—endangering not only the success of the demonstration but the women’s very lives.
Inspired by actual events, The Women’s March offers a fascinating account of a crucial but little-remembered moment in American history, a turning point in the struggle for women’s rights.

9/13/22 - Riverhead Books - $30.00
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of What If? and How To answers more of the weirdest questions you never thought to ask The millions of people around the world who read and loved What If? still have questions, and those questions are getting stranger. Thank goodness xkcd creator Randall Munroe is here to help. Planning to ride a fire pole from the Moon back to Earth? The hardest part is sticking the landing. Hoping to cool the atmosphere by opening everyone’s freezer door at the same time? Maybe it’s time for a brief introduction to thermodynamics. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade, built a billion-story building, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on a geyser as it erupted? Okay, if you insist.
Before you go on a cosmic road trip, feed the residents of New York City to a T. rex, or fill every church with bananas, be sure to consult this practical guide for impractical ideas. Unfazed by absurdity, Munroe consults the latest research on everything from swing-set physics to airliner catapult–design to answer his readers’ questions, clearly and concisely, with illuminating and occasionally terrifying illustrations. As he consistently demonstrates, you can learn a lot from examining how the world might work in very specific extreme circumstances.

9/20/22 - Random House - $28.00
From Pulitzer Prize–winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Strout comes a poignant, pitch-perfect novel about a divorced couple stuck together during lockdown—and the love, loss, despair, and hope that animate us even as the world seems to be falling apart.
With her trademark spare, crystalline prose—a voice infused with “intimate, fragile, desperate humanness” (The Washington Post)—Elizabeth Strout turns her exquisitely tuned eye to the inner workings of the human heart, following the indomitable heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton through the early days of the pandemic.
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea.
Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire. At the heart of this story are the deep human connections that unite us even when we’re apart—the pain of a beloved daughter’s suffering, the emptiness that comes from the death of a loved one, the promise of a new friendship, and the comfort of an old, enduring love.

Fiction Addiction's Featured Reader: Grace Anne, Store Employee

Everyone has a story behind the books that mean the most to them, and we want to tell yours. Want to be featured? Reply to this email and let us know, and you might see yourself in an upcoming newsletter!
What was your favorite childhood read and why?
One of the first books that I remember being head over heels in love with was A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. After all, what little girl doesn’t love a happily ever after? When I got a little older, I became obsessed with The 39 Clues, and found myself wishing that I could travel the world and solve mysteries spanning generations with Amy and Dan.
Do you have a go-to comfort book that you’ve read over and over?
I’ve read Jane Eyre more times than I can count. I fell in love with it when I was thirteen, and it’s remained my favorite ever since. I also re-read Every Soul A Star by Wendy Mass every summer, and it’s one of my favorite nostalgic traditions.
Why do you love reading?
I love getting to escape into another world and live in someone else’s shoes. Seeing a new perspective is a beautiful thing, and I love the way that a good book can make you feel a little more seen, too.
What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year?
Book Lovers by Emily Henry absolutely stole my heart. It made me laugh and made me cry, and was the kind of book that I wished would never end.
What’s on your nightstand right now?
I just started reading The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins, and I’m fully intrigued. After that, I’ll be diving into The Summer I Turned Pretty series by Jenny Han, per my sisters’ request - they’re obsessed with the new show, and want me to read the books so that I can catch up!

The latest in the New York Times bestselling Cork O’Connor Mystery Series from the “master storyteller” (Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author) follows Cork in a race against time to save his wife, a mysterious stranger, and an Ojibwe healer from bloodthirsty mercenaries.
The ancient Ojibwe healer Henry Meloux has had a vision of his death. As he walks the Northwoods in solitude, he tries to prepare himself peacefully for the end of his long life. But peace is destined to elude him as hunters fill the woods seeking a woman named Dolores Morriseau, a stranger who had come to the healer for shelter and the gift of his wisdom.
Meloux guides this stranger and his great niece, Cork O’Connor’s wife, to safety deep into the Boundary Waters, his home for more than a century. On the last journey he may ever take into this beloved land, Meloux must do his best to outwit the deadly mercenaries who follow.
Meanwhile, in Aurora, Cork works feverishly to identify the hunters and the reason for their relentless pursuit, but he has little to go on. Desperate, Cork begins tracking the killers but his own skills as a hunter are severely tested by nightfall and a late season snowstorm. He knows only too well that with each passing hour time is running out. But his fiercest enemy in this deadly game of cat and mouse may well be his own deep self-doubt about his ability to save those he loves.
From “an author who never disappoints” (Bookreporter), this is another gripping and richly told addition to a masterful series.

8/9/22 - Penguin Press - $27.00
An epic, mesmerizing debut novel set against a rapidly changing post–Cultural Revolution China, A Map for the Missing reckons with the costs of pursuing one’s dreams and the lives we leave behind
Tang Yitian has been living in America for almost a decade when he receives an urgent phone call from his mother: his father has disappeared from the family’s rural village in China. Though they have been estranged for years, Yitian promises to come home. When Yitian attempts to piece together what may have happened, he struggles to navigate China’s impenetrable bureaucracy as an outsider, and his mother’s evasiveness only deepens the mystery. So he seeks out a childhood friend who may be in a position to help: Tian Hanwen, the only other person who shared Yitian’s desire to pursue a life of knowledge. As a teenager, Hanwen was “sent down” from Shanghai to Yitian’s village as part of the country’s rustication campaign. Young and in love, they dreamed of attending university in the city together. But when their plans resulted in a terrible tragedy, their paths diverged, and while Yitian ended up a professor in America, Hanwen was left behind, resigned to life as a midlevel bureaucrat’s wealthy housewife. Reuniting for the first time as adults, Yitian and Hanwen embark on the search for Yitian’s father, all the while grappling with the past—who Yitian’s father really was, and what might have been. Spanning the late 1970s to 1990s and moving effortlessly between rural provinces and big cities, A Map for the Missing is a deeply felt examination of family and forgiveness, and the meaning of home.

In this powerful novel about the cost of greatness, a legendary athlete attempts a comeback when the world considers her past her prime—from the New York Times bestselling author of Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones & The Six, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father, Javier, as her coach. A former champion himself, Javier has trained her since the age of two.
But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning player named Nicki Chan.
At thirty-seven years old, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in an attempt to reclaim her record. Even if the sports media says that they never liked “the Battle-Axe” anyway. Even if her body doesn’t move as fast as it did. And even if it means swallowing her pride to train with a man she once almost opened her heart to: Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever.
In spite of it all, Carrie Soto is back, for one epic final season. In this riveting and unforgettable novel, Taylor Jenkins Reid tells her most vulnerable, emotional story yet.

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen
Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen is a gentle ghost story set on a made-up island off the coast of Charleston. I loved the quirky characters (a reclusive bestselling author, odd birds, a henna artist, and a James Beard-award winning Southern chef) and the theme of letting go of the past to open oneself to the future. Recommended to anyone who loves Southern novels and a touch of magic.

The beginning of a fabulous new series from Allen Eskens. Lila Nash is a newly minted (almost official) prosecuting attorney. She is determined to get justice for rape victims, and put the perpetrators away for a long time. Something that didn’t happen when she was attacked 10 years earlier. When a rape and attempted murder seems to have links to previous murders, Lila and the detectives soon think maybe her case is also related. But there is absolutely no evidence. Not only does Lila have to contend with her past trauma rearing its ugly head but she has to deal with the head of the division who wants nothing more than a chance to fire Lila. This is a terrific example of great police work, determination and what a women can do when she faces her fears and doesn’t let the bad guys win. You will love Lila and her boss Andie Fitch.

Dirt Creek by Hayley Scrivenor
The small Australian town of Durton (Dirt Creek or Dirt Town to the locals) is the setting of this slow burn mystery about a missing child and her friends, family, and family friends. In a small town such as Durton everyone becomes a suspect and secrets long hidden are slowly revealed. The main story is told in first person by Esther's best friend Ronnie, and by another friend named Lewis. The story from the adults' point of view - Esther's mom, Ronnie's mom, and an incredibly determined police detective named Sarah Michaels - is told in third person. The Greek chorus of We - the other children in the town - help to highlight what it is like living in such a small and isolated community. I loved the unusual way Scrivenor told the story and her vivid descriptions of the heat, the dust, and the isolation. Definitely recommended for fans of The Dry.

Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister

I went into this totally blind, and boy am I glad I did because of I had read a blurb I may never have started it. As it turns out I was hooked from the beginning when Jen witnesses her teenaged son commit a murder outside their house, so once I realized what was happening in the story it was way too late to stop. This is a thriller unlike anything I have ever read. I am still amazed at how it was plotted and told in such an ingenious manner.

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney
Four generations of a dysfunctional family that all have dark secrets come together on Halloween for the first time in a long time to celebrate Nana's 80th birthday. A birthday that was prophesied years ago to be her last. If that isn't enough to make you know something awful is going to happen, add to it that they are all gathered at Seaglass, the family home that is located on a remote tidal island on the Cornish coast. It is only accessible during low tide so once they are all there and the first death occurs, they are stuck together for 12 hours. This is definitely Alice Feeney's best yet with an ending that you will never see coming.

The Lost Kings by Tyrell Johnson
A true psychological story that also is a family drama, a love story, and a little bit mystery. By age 12, Jeanie King knows she is damaged and because of that she protects people from being hurt by her. She keeps her distance and only makes one true friend, then runs away from the ones who love her the most and are trying to help her. This is a moving story about a young girl who finally figures out what she needs to do to heal. I was so involved with Jeanie and the story of her life that I was totally thrown for a loop by the ending of the book. If you love a long-extended look into someone's damaged psyche and an OMG ending, then you won't want to miss The Lost Kings.

The Photographer by Mary Dixie Carter
I have started and stopped quite a few psychological/domestic/suspense books lately because they all seemed to be the same old thing and because I just didn't care anything about the main character. Not only did I not stop reading The Photographer but I read it in less than 24 hours. Delta Dawn is an extraordinary photographer. She is especially in demand to photograph the birthday parties of the children of elite New Yorkers. She is so successful because she knows how to capture an image (or slightly manipulate it when necessary) to show the parents a picture of what they perceive the reality of their lives and relationships to be. Delta tells her own story in the book and she is just as accomplished at making the reader see reality as she wants you to believe it exists as she is at manipulating what you see. I have never encountered a character quite like Delta. This extremely addictive and suspenseful look at obsession, desire and obviously some deep-seated psychological trauma will have you asking yourself what is real until the very last page. Plus, you will learn a lot about photography.

The Couple at Number 9 by Harper Paperbacks
An idyllic cottage for the couple in number 9 turns out to be anything but idyllic when two bodies are uncovered in the garden during some remodeling. Rose, the original owner of the cottage is now in her late seventies and living in a care home with dementia. Her granddaughter Saffie, who is expecting her first child, and Saffie's husband Tom were thrilled when given the cottage by Saffie's mother Lorna. Little did any of them know that their remodeling would uncover and bring to light many unanswered questions from the past. Why didn't Lorna know her mother owned this cottage? Why did Rose never talk about Lorna's father other than to say he died before he was born? Who was Rose's mysterious boarder and what happened to her? Why did Lorna always seem to be running away from something? Who is the man who claims to be a PI and says that Rose has evidence his client wants and will use force if necessary to obtain it? And of course - who were the people buried in the garden, and what happened to them? Told from several points of view and several time frames, Douglas is an expert at slowly feeding you information while at the same time leaving you with many new questions. All of the information finally comes together in a twisty ending you won't see coming.

The Fixer Upper by Lauren Forsythe
After running into an ex who has his life amazingly together, Aly's friends determine that the reason for his (and every other ex's) success is...Aly. She sees people's potential and 'fixes' them, helps them become what they want to become. After noticing their female coworkers' problems with the burdensome mental labor in their relationships, Aly's friends get her involved in a scheme to help them, and anyone else who needs it. Enter Dylan, Aly's childhood best friend (and first love) whose influencer girlfriend has just paid Aly to get Dylan's tech business off the ground and propose to his girlfriend. Aly doesn't feel right doing it but figures if he's happy, if this is what he wants, then she'll do it. Now she and Dylan both have to reckon with their past and their present and figure out what, if anything, they are to each other any more. A fun slow-burn, second-chance romance that explores the potential we see in relationships and whether it's worth trying to reach that potential or if we should focus on the here and now.

Ten Thousand Stitches by Olivia Atwood

Effie is a maid who has fallen for one of the Family. She's resigned to her fate of service, until faerie Lord Blackthorn shows up offering to help. Effie is of course wary about any deal with a faerie, but she and the other servants are SO disrespected, and Lord Blackthorn seems SO eager to help, and Mr. Ashbrooke is SO nice and handsome. So Effie takes the deal, agreeing to stitch 10,000 stitches in Lord Blackthorn's jacket in exchange for his help getting Mr. Ashbrooke to fall in love with her and propose -- IF Lord Blackthorn can actually help instead of accidentally wreaking havoc. I'm loving these fun magical regency romances! This is another one with social critiques that feel timely even now, and that ultimately reinforces the idea of individual agency among hilarious faerie hijinks.

Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan
Sewanee used to be an actress until a terrible accident, but now she narrates audiobooks, and she's very good at it, as only an actress can be. While at Las Vegas for an audiobook convention, she meets Nick, who is very sexy and very interested in her, which hasn't happened in a while. They have fun then part ways, though Sewanee can't stop thinking about him. Then comes the bombshell that a mega romance author who recently passed away specifically wanted Sewanee to narrate her last project -- with romance audio superstar Brock McKnight -- even though Sewanee retired her romance persona years ago because she can't bring herself to believe in the HEA. But the money would go a long way towards helping take care of her sick grandmother, so she agrees. As Brock becomes more and more real to her despite having one of the most well-protected identities in the industry, and while Nick keeps popping up in her thoughts, Sewanee has to decide what she really wants from her life, and how she can go about getting it. An amazing audiobook narrator herself, Whelan gives us a glimpse inside the industry, as well as a fun, at times laugh-out-loud romance that's as much about personal growth as relationship growth. (And if you're a fan of audiobooks, you're in for a treat, as Whelan narrates this one herself! Listen here!)

It's when she's pretending to be the princess that she's abducted by mysterious shadow-wielding Reven and forced on a journey across hazardous landscapes with dangerous monsters to be vanquished, all in order for Reven to ask for Meren's help. But Meren isn't even sure she can help, especially when the immortal king who has been stealing queens from Meren's dominion for generations declares his intention to marry her sister. Now Meren and Reven must work together to defeat a common enemy, even if it means putting an end to the good they've managed to find. Accomplished: A Georgie Darcy Novel by Amanda Quain
We all know about Lizzie Bennet and Darcy -- but what about Darcy's sister, Georgiana, and her sordid history with Wickham? If you're a Pride and Prejudice fan, you'll recognize several characters in this contemporary spin, but Georgiana Darcy gets the main character treatment. She has to deal with what Wickham did last year that almost got her expelled from prestigious boarding school Pemberley, a brother who's both more and less absent than he should be, and everyone in school hating her for various reasons. Her one saving grace is her band friend Avery, who is the only one who doesn't treat her as an outcast and so might be able to help her with her mission to get her life back on track. A fun take on Pride and Prejudice that is familiar enough to be enticing but new enough to keep your attention.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
Mika Moon grew up away from other witches, as specified in the Rules. It made for a lonely childhood, and continues to make for a lonely adulthood. She doesn't have any friends to speak of, on account of her moving every few months, and the only time she sees other witches is when the so-called (by Mika) Very Secret Society of Witches meets every third month. Then she gets a query from someone who saw her (pretend) witchy YouTube videos offering her a job tutoring three girls in magic. When she arrives at Nowhere House, she expects to do her job and move on, just like always. Except the people, kids and adults alike (especially scowly Jamie), manage to weasel their way into her heart, and she starts to think that maybe she's been missing out on everything that makes her human by trying to be a good witch. A moving story about found family and learning to be true to yourself. If you liked The House in the Cerulean Sea but perhaps wanted a bit more romance, this book is for you!

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen
Hart is a Tanrian marshal, whose job is to dispatch souls from their stolen bodies before they go on a killing spree. Mercy is an undertaker, whose job is to prepare the bodies Hart brings her for the afterlife. Hart and Mercy have despised each other since they first met. But after a particularly nasty run-in, Hart feels the need to unburden himself and writes a letter to an anonymous "friend". The letter makes its way to Mercy, and a tentative friendship is formed, though neither knows who their secret correspondent is. A romance set in a fantastical yet recognizable world, with characters you can't help but love, this story will tear you apart and put you back together again. I laughed and cried and wish I could go back and read it again for the first time.

Neuroscientist Bee has lived her life by the mantra, 'What would Marie do?' (Marie, of course, being Marie Curie, her hero). Except now Bee is in a situation she's not sure even Marie could help with: She just got an amazing project working with NASA, but with the caveat that she has to co-lead with her grad school nemesis, engineer Levi, who never made a secret of how much he disliked Bee. Armed with her goth research assistant (whom she loves to pieces), Bee is determined to defeat the stemlords -- made easier by the fact that Levi seems to be standing up for her. A fun and hilarious STEM rom-com with fantastic characters; Bee is an absolute delight, and you will be rooting for her the whole way, in both her individual and romantic pursuits.

On the Subject of Unmentionable Things by Julia Walton
High schooler Phoebe has been obsessed with researching sex facts for years. It's therapeutic in a way, since she doesn't feel comfortable asking her parents questions. And her blog gives other kids in the same boat a resource for their own questions. Nobody knows that Phoebe is the one writing the blog, though, and she wants to keep it that way. But now that her blog has gone viral thanks to the uber-conservative mayoral candidate who thinks abstinence only sex ed is the the way to go, Phoebe's days of anonymity may be numbered. Phoebe and her friends are very relatable characters, and the topic of sex ed is an important one that I think the author handles well.

My Imaginary Mary by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
Mary Godwin (you probably know her as Mary Shelley) wants nothing more than to be a writer. Ada Byron (you know her as Ada Lovelace) wants to do math and invent. The two are brought together by Ms. Stamp, their fae (not fairy!) godmother. It turns out, Mary and Ada are both fae, like their famous parents. Mary is quite a natural at the fae business, and accidentally helps Ada bring an automaton to life, which is very much against the fae rules. But things happen, and Mary, Ada, and their new friend Pan find themselves on the run from an evil scientist bent on discovering the secret of life. A rollicking adventure read with all of the fun pop culture references I've come to expect from the Lady Janies.

Long Story Short by Serena Taylor
Beatrice has been homeschooled her entire life, with the end goal of going to Oxford. Now her goal is in sight, she's been accepted -- and her parents don't think she's ready. So they come up with a plan: Shakespearean theater camp. But as if that weren't enough, they've also come up with a list of tasks to help her make the most of being a teenager and the social situations they want her to be comfortable with before sending her halfway around the world on her own. And Beatrice is thrown right into the fray almost as soon as she arrives, surprising herself by making friends with her roommate almost immediately, but also by making an enemy of the camp founders' (attractive, great actor, confounding) son Nik. As the summer goes on, Beatrice finds herself drawn into Nik's orbit more and more, though she can't for the life of her figure out what the end game is. This story has some major Pride and Prejudice vibes, but also manages to capture socially awkward Beatrice's foray into teenage drama (and Romeo and Juliet) with perfection.

Heat 2 by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner
'Heat 2' by writer-director Michael Mann and award winning mystery writer Meg Gardiner has delivered a solid follow up to the 1995 film 'Heat'. Stars Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer, to name a few, brought a ultra gritty take on the cat and mouse scenario between the L.A. Homicide Robbery division and a elite group of thieves in the original film 'Heat'. This novel, which is both a prequel and sequel, gives us a deep dive into the beginnings and conclusion to this deadly rivalry. A very satisfying and, at times, pulse pounding read.

The Family Remains by Lisa Jewell
Lisa Jewell revisits the characters from The Family Upstairs, along with some new faces, in The Family Remains. The lives of multiple characters, including those who starred in The Family Upstairs, intertwine as new mysteries are introduced and old crimes are discovered in the modern-day. While The Family Remains is technically a sequel, it can also be read as a stand-alone novel, full of mystery and suspense as readers attempt to connect things that happened in the past with the characters who narrate the story. Perfect for readers who want a fast-paced, immersive read that is not too scary or intense.

This is a great installment in the Mercy Kilpatrick series. When a boy no one knowns walks inn the diner and announces his Mother and infant child are missing, Mercy becomes involved and is focusing on the missing mother and child and also navigating how to protect the remaining children. Treasure hunters are a different type, daring, risk averse, always sure they will prevail. Now town is over run with them and Truman hardly has time to focus on one issue before another arises. Then he is faced with a murder and this changes the tolerance for the treasure hunters and their actions. Family secrets begin to unravel and it seems the children and missing parents may have a connection to other events. Very suspense filled with a complex plot and engaging characters.

The Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook by Brian Noyes
I have always been interested in cookbooks, the recipes, the notes, the tips, I enjoy them all. To say I enjoyed the Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook would be an understatement. I was captured by the forward and could not wait to explore the heart of the book. I'll address the recipes, I did not see any that were not intriguing, the attention to the ingredients and why they matter is well explained and designed. The heart of the book is the love and energy for cooking and feeding that shines through in Brian Noyes words about the particular recipe. How it came to be, the historical twist, who it was created for, and happy accidents (like the chili for the neighbors chili cookout). I felt like I was in the room listening to him talk and create, and oh how I wish that were so. Buy this as a gift for someone special, get an extra copy for yourself to ensure the gift actually makes it out of your hands!

The Ninth Month by James Patterson
It's been awhile since I've read James Patterson, but this one looked interesting, and was it ever. Emily Atkinson has it all: beautiful, brilliant, wealthy and despite that is alcoholic and self destructive. After a night of drinking and drug use, Emily wakes up in the hospital only to learn that she is pregnant. Patterson takes us on a nine month journey along with Emily who may or may not be the target of a stalker, one who might also be entering and rearranging things in her apartment. Or is she suffering paranoid delusions? This brilliantly written story keeps the reader in the same mind-set as Emily - not really knowing what might be real or might not. What it will do is keep you glued to the story and not wanting to put it down until you learn the truth. Story telling at it's finest. A great read!
