On the 2nd of October 2024, Laura Íñigo Álvarez participated as discussant in the online SPEED seminar entitled Access to Remedy for Victims of Transnational Business-Related Human Rights Abuses Through Private Dispute Resolution: A Human Rights-Centred Assessment that was presented by Gustavo Becker, PhD Candidate, University of Amsterdam and University of Luxembourg.

Guest lecture by Olena Uvarova
The NOVA Centre on Business, Human Rights and the Environment had the pleasure of receiving Olena Uvarova for a visiting day on the 4th October 2024.
Olena Uvarova gave an insightful guest lecture on The Corporate Responsibility to Respect Human Rights in Challenging Contexts in the framework of the module on Business, Human Rights and Sustainability.

Guest lecture by Anaïs Tobalagba
On the 18th of October 2024, the NOVA BHRE was delighted to receive our visiting researcher, Anaïs Tobalagba, for a guest lecture in the framework of the module on Business, Human Rights and Sustainability. During the guest lecture, Anaïs shared her practical insights on the corporate-related human rights and environmental harms in the industrial cobalt mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On the 25th October 2024 our visiting researcher Anaïs Tobalagba also moderated the panels on Advancing Women’s Rights at the Workplace and Global developments on Human Rights Due Diligence at the event Business & Human Rights: Peer Learning Event, which took place at the Egmont Palace in Bruxelles.

On the 24th of October 2024, members of the Center participated in The 26th General Comment of the Committee on the Rights of the Child at the 2024 edition of ‘The Lisbon Climate Conference’ which was co-organized by Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Università di Torino, Koç Üniversitesi, and members of the Law Schools Global League.
Laura Íñigo Álvarez and Daniel Iglesias Márquez presented their paper Unpacking the Potential of State-Based Grievance Mechanisms in Rights-Based Climate Cases Brought against Corporations: Insights from OECD National Contact Points.

New Blog Series: Exploring Litigation for Corporate Accountability
Last month, we announced the launch of a new blog series titled “Explorando los caminos hacia el acceso efectivo a la justicia en materia de empresas y derechos humanos” which explores the evolving landscape of litigation related to the negative impacts of business activities.
Coordinated by Daniel Iglesias Márquez and Estrella del Valle Calzada, and edited by Laura Íñigo Álvarez, this series brings together contributions from authors across various regions, offering both theoretical insights and case study perspectives on corporate accountability. In October, we concluded this blog series, publishing 6 more blog posts.

ESG Reporting and Due Diligence (Portuguese Edition) |
|
The ESG Reporting and Due Diligence Course (Portuguese Edition) coordinated by Claire Bright and Lucila de Almeida has been taking place throughout the month of October and until the 27th of November. It has notably featured interventions by Claire Bright and Ana Santos Duarte on the regulatory framework on business and human rights, with a special focus on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, the EU Forced Labour Ban, the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, Responsible Contracting Practices and Audits, as well as Social Indicators and by Céline da Graça Pires on the Human Rights Due Diligence Process in practice.
