Denarius Frazier, is a maths teacher in New York.
He has opened my eyes to a new way of teaching (and coaching)
Watch this video of him teaching math class.
What do you observe?
He walks around the class, absorbing data about every student’s progress while reinforcing his individual relationship with each of them. His energy and engagement with the students is inspiring.
Imagine how affirming it would feel to be in this classroom.
In The Coaches Guide To Teaching, Doug Lemon explores how great coaches teach.
When you observe the classroom closer you will notice:
- A clipboard - Denarius has intentionally planned the things he will observe, ticking them off as he goes. He also has a exemplar answer documents
- Open questions - He invites curiosity from the group: Who agrees? Who disagrees? Who can build on it?’
- Focus and accountability - "Waiting on one" This indicates that one person is not paying attention. He will only proceed once everyone is focused
How would your organisation perform if teams worked with a learning environment like this?
There are too many insights to share in this short newsletter.
In this summary I share more about:
- How to check for understanding
- How to give feedback that people act upon
- How to stop over talking
