7GA’s Personal Climate Action Center’s goal is to inspire individuals to take climate action with simple steps adding up to make a big difference. Our first tip of 2022 demonstrates just that: wrap your water heater in an insulating blanket. (Or another way to think of this: give your water heater a hug!)
Wrapping your water heater in an insulated blanket can save up to 250 lbs. of carbon emissions annually, which is equivalent to about 12 gallons of gasoline. How do you know if your water heater needs a blanket? If it’s warm to the touch, it’s losing heat and wasting energy. You may also check the R-value on your tank’s sticker. If below 24, your heater needs to be insulated. According to energy.gov, “Water heater insulation could reduce standby heat losses by 25%–45% and save you about 7%–16% in water heating costs - and should pay for itself in about a year.”
It’s easy to insulate your water heater. Shop at your local hardware store or online to purchase an insulation roll for less than $50. Some utility companies offer blankets at low prices or offer rebates, so it might be worth it to check there first. If you are installing it yourself, set aside a couple hours, find a helper, and measure, cut and tape carefully. energy.gov provides some easy step by step instructions.
You may also consider simply lowering your water heater temperature as well since the preset temperature is usually unnecessarily high. This also saves energy. To learn how, watch this video here. Finally, if you’re considering replacing your water heater, think tankless.
Studies show that when people take constructive action, anxiety over climate change diminishes, so start the new year off right by joining us in participating in simple, personal and effective actions.
