A Message from Our President

Lighting the Way

As United Methodist Women, we have learned that working in partnership with others helps us to accomplish more.  Not only does it bring about greater results, working with those who are to receive the assistance, helps our work to be more lasting as well!

That is why the UMW materials talk about our mission work WITH others. When I was looking into other mission organizations, their materials showed how they were helping others by "Doing Mission on" them or "Sending mission to" the others.  

When we talk with those who will be on the receiving end of our mission work to find out what is actually needed, how best to assist them, how to help them learn so that they will be able to continue the projects on their own after we are gone, etc..... We find out how to best use our limited time and mission money!  

This also allows us to empower them to help themselves and others.  It encourages self esteem (sometimes lacking for those in need) and sets a good example.

When we work in partnership with each other, we come up with more ideas, we are able to help hold each other up when the energy starts to lag, and we can build a better world for all!

Book Review - Social Action 2020

"Midnight Teacher" is one of the 2020 Social Action books from our program. This book is a good example of mission work done WITH others.  It discusses how a person taught others to read and, when it became dangerous, she offered to cancel classes.  Those who were being helped chose to brave the dangers and so she continued the lessons.  Read the book for the full story and to learn how things turned out! (Note: if your unit does not own it, most public libraries in the district have it.  Reading it for a unit meeting and then discussing how the lessons from the book could help you and your unit to grow in faith would make a great addition to a program!)

2020 Day of Giving

If you are going to be helping us to grow the Legacy fund, thank you!

From our conference last year, the total donated to the legacy fund was $24, 352.18.  It would be nice if we could keep up the good work and do better this year.  This fund will allow United Methodist Women mission work to continue as our membership declines through age.  We could also work on bringing in new members.  If we do this, we have to allow for new ideas as well!

Final Thoughts

I have learned the hard way that simplifying your life actually helps you to be able to better take care of yourself.  When you take better care of yourself, you are able to take better care of others.

Another benefit of simplifying your life (and what you do) is that you can actually accomplish MORE!
