Explore the use of touch in this one-day, deep dive into the theory, practice and ethics of touch in therapy. This practical, experiential, in-person workshop is suitable for Dance Movement Therapists, Creative Arts Therapists, and those working in somatic and body-based practices – professionals through trainees. Along with what it means to engage in physical touch (of others and self) in this workshop, we will also explore what it means to be touched metaphorically.

Questions that will be addressed through a blend of presentation, practical exercises, reflection, movement-based exploration and group discussion:

• What must we be mindful of when seeking to touch others?
• What do we need to be mindful of in ourselves when others touch us?
• What does consent mean in the context of touch?
• What about self-touch - is there room for it in the therapeutic setting and if utilized, for what purpose?
• What are the qualities of interaction that cause people to say they've been touched?
• What then does it actually mean to be touched?
• How does being touched emotionally feel?
• As a therapist, what do you have to do/embody to touch others?

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the attributes involved in being physically touched and being touched emotionally, and how these two are both separate and interrelated.
2. Understand the responsibility of the therapist in creating a safe space in which touch can occur.
3. Understand the different ways in which physical and metaphorical touch of self and others can be used therapeutically.
