The teacher training school ADPP - Lundal Sul received a visit from Dr. Pacheco Francisco, Secretary of State for Education, in August. Accompanied by Moxico’s Vice Governor for Social and Political Affairs, the visitors were shown round and heard about plans for the coming year. Thanks for the visit! |

"Women in Action” projects aim to help women create their own small sewing business and, importantly, the projects provide extended support to help women succeed. In August, we caught up with some graduates from the courses to hear about their business plans. |

STEM is about creativity, exploration, experience, skills, analysis, decision-making, inspiration, flexibility, curiosity, teamwork, communication, sustainability and being ready to respond to real world challenges. One of the biggest challenges in STEM teaching is helping pupils grasp basic concepts, whether in mathematics or science, which is where practical sessions are essential. | |

New school year |

A new school year is underway at ADPP Teacher Training Schools and polytechnics. The disruption and frequent reorganisation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic that characterised 2020-2021 has left its mark but if anything, the schools and the students have emerged stronger than ever, with consolidated education and sanitation systems and recognition for the efforts made to control the pandemic. |

Conference on methodology for technical professional schools |
|
|
|
|
Angola is focused on achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of quality inclusive education at all levels. INFQE organised a “Zoom” conference on 7 October for technical and professional schools at which ADPP’s 8 Polytechnics were among the 135 participating institutions including agrarian, maritime, health, management, hotel, telecommunications, religious and general technical schools.

Road Traffic Safety Project Cabinda |
|
|
|
Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, even though a helping hand is often needed. In this case, road signs outside schools to warn drivers. Cabinda Municipal Education Secretary, Education Department officers, the Provincial Inspector and the Head of Cabinda Road Safety Department attended the ceremonial installation of the first road sign. In-service teachers trained by the project in road safety continue to play their part by giving road safety lessons to clusters of pupils in the community. |

|
The campaign to ensure all teachers and students at ADPP teacher training schools are vaccinated against Covid-19 is in full swing. Currently, 95% of all teachers are vaccinated, and all over-18s at around half of the schools. The campaign continues. |

|
Math, science and natural science are key subjects that are brought to life by ADPP’s STEM project. With a good ideas and simple educational tools, teachers can make learning fun and effective for their pupils. The project is already starting Phase 3, having reached a landmark 1500 in-service teachers trained. Click to see the coverage on the national news. |

Young entrepreneurs!
The future of Angola, or at least a significant part of the future, depends on the next generation of entrepreneurs. Students at the Polytechnic School ADPP Caxito showed the way on 22 November, with demonstrations of cookery in an outdoor kitchen and the sale of food by the Modern Cooks; the sale of items made by the Textile Artisans; and the display and sale of energy saving stoves at the hands of the Energy Assistants. 24,000 kzs was earned in all. Governor of Bengo Province, Maria Quiosa, was especially keen to learn more about the energy saving stove.

International Teachers Day |

|
On the 5th of October each year, we celebrate the vital role of the teacher in ensuring quality education. At Teacher Training School ADPP Luanda, and all other ADPP schools, students learn to fulfil this role, assume responsibility and maintain high standards. They celebrate the day with the community and provide a taste of modern, child-oriented teaching. |

Theory & Practice at the ADPP Polytechnic Schools
Water Assistant students at the Polytechnic School ADPP Bengulea combine theory with practice. They gain experience by working on local pipework systems, including at the school itself. Benguela Provincial Director of Water & Energy, Fernando Ekuma, made good on his promise to send a team of technicians to check the water pipes at EPP Benguela. They came on 6 November and the students had the opportunity to watch professionals at work – as well as to see if their own work was up to standard.

Education Department Visits |
|
The Ministry of Education supervises all ADPP schools and the education authorities at all levels take a keen interest in the work of the ADPP teacher training schools. Uíge Provincial Education Director visited the Teacher Training School ADPP Uíge to see for herself the modern learning and teaching methods employed. |

|
40 Pedagogical Sessions for teachers in Huila |

|
Thousands of school children are benefiting from the additional skills, and renewed motivation and enthusiasm that the in-service training course engenders in participants. Primary school teachers in Gambos and Bibala received their certificates in December on completion of the 40 Pedagogical Sessions. Berta Morais, Head of Huíla Provincial Education Office, spoke of the impact ADPP has in Huíla and Namibe, during the graduation ceremony for 154 in-service teachers in Huíla. In Bibala, Namibe, 73 teachers graduated. |

Getting Cheap Airfare For Last Minute Travel
Art and Music play a key role in engaging children, making school a fun place to be, and contributing to academic development. Students at Teacher Training School ADPP Zaire are piloting art, music and physical education thanks to ADPP’s Jimbuetete project, financed by LNG. They have been giving lessons to children in local primary schools this month, after intensive training at the end of November.

Women in Action graduations |
|
|
|
Dressmaking Courses open up employment and income-generating opportunities. 67 women in group 4 at the Women in Action project in Estalagem, Luanda, graduated in December after completing a sewing and entrepreneurship course. Viana Municipal Administration attended the ceremony. There was also a graduation ceremony for 130 participants at Zango Women in Action. |

Ready for the start of term! |

Teaching aids brighten up the classroom and make learning fun. The Teacher Training School ADPP Cuanza Sul, in Quibala, distributed school calendars to primary schools in the municipality. In addition to the calendar for the academic year, the posters also feature a map of Africa, an illustrated alphabet and the times tables. |

Teachers’ planning sessions before the start of the new term took place at all ADPP schools, ensuring a smooth start to the year. ADPP Polytechnic Benguela prepared plans for the coming months, and the Teacher Training School ADPP Cunene was in full swing with the digital learning system. |

Focus on Maths and Portuguese |

Math & Portuguese are essential disciplines for primary school teachers, helping ensure a high standard of lessons for primary school pupils. Students at Lunda Sul, pictured, and all other ADPP teacher training schools sit monthly tests in the two subjects. |

Experts contribute to Polytechnic training |
|
|
|
Community Health students at the Polytechnic ADPP Cazenga recently enjoyed a guest lecture given by a health specialist from Cajueiras Hospital, Dr Sonia. A former teacher at ADPP’s School for Street Children in Cazenga, she well understands the benefits of educating young people om health matters. During the talk, she explained about the workings of intensive care units.
Meanwhile at the Polytechnic ADPP Huambo, who better to tell students about the natural resources in Huambo Province than the Head of the Department of Natural Resources, which forms part of the Provincial Office for the Economy and Integrated Development. His talk was thoroughly enjoyed by the students, and in particular the exhibits he brought along. |

Expansion of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) project
After two successful phases in Luanda, the STEM project is expanding to Bengo Province, where directors of teacher training schools and polytechnics attended a presentation. The aim once more is to provide theoretical and practical training for teachers, as well as STEM manuals and basic equipment, with the ultimate goal of providing better lessons for their students. The project continues in Luanda.

Enterprise and the environment |
|
|
|
Five enterprising women from Lufefena community joined EPP Huambo Environment Promoter students to demonstrate the manufacture of briquettes from charcoal residue.
Partners in the charcoal stoves project, Forest Development Institute, Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Environment, and UNDP, witnessed this practical measure to reduce waste, and also visited the school’s metal workshop to see the various stages of making an IKO stove. |

Encouraging women scientists, engineers and mathematicians |
|
STEM Phase 3 at the Polytechnic School ADPP Ramiro is bringing science alive for female students, who gave a demonstration of chemical reactions, using easily available materials. Encouraging girls to study science and math at school helps double the pool of candidates for hitherto male-dominated careers. |

25 years of teacher training |

|
|
ADPP Angola is celebrating a 25-year partnership with the Ministry of Education to provide teacher training. We celebrated the occasion with the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Luísa Grilo, and directors of ADPP teacher training schools. 25 years of placing young people at the centre of learning and of promoting development has resulted in 13,696 graduate teachers, ready to make a difference in the lives of rural children, with their knowledge, skills and experiences. |

Parents and family members, together with friends and partners of the Polytechnic ADPP Benguela, were in the audience as students explained about their work experience at a People’s Exam. It was an important day, during which the fervour of the students impressed everyone present. |

Save our generation from drugs |
|
The Polytechnic ADPP Huambo invited the Secretary of The National Association Against Drugs, Adélio Sambongo accompanied by activist Rodrigues Campanha Eurico to give a talk about drugs. They explained about the danger of drugs, saying that it was better never to get into drugs because it was difficult for young people to emerge from addiction. |

Midway meetings at ADPP teacher training schools are about exchanging information, reporting on progress, receiving advice and encouragement, and preparing for the next term of teaching practice at rural primary schools. Team 2019 at TTS ADPP Benguela, Cunene and Cuando Cubango are supporting a project to empower women and girls, and will give lessons about sexual and reproductive health and rights. They received project signs and manuals during their 2nd midway meeting, to take back to the 60 participating primary schools that are benefiting. |

Africa Day – a Learning Opportunity |
|
|
|
Teacher, students and parents at the Polytechnic School ADPP Zango celebrated Africa Day with a festival of African countries. Each class studied and presented their chosen country, and invited parents to attend as well as to form a jury. Everyone learned about Angola, DRC, Zambia, Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Guinea Bissau, Namibia and Mozambique, after which the jury selected the three best presentations. |

The Many Facets of STEM Education |
|
As part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths project, engineers from ExxonMobil explained about oil refining and the many uses of oil. They visited teacher training schools in all of the clusters in the project, including the teacher training schools Marconi, Dom Bosco, Mutu and ADPP Luanda. |

Keeping Covid at Bay |
|
ADPP Polytechnics in Luanda are organising vaccination campaigns for students and staff as part of the constant vigilance regarding the virus and sustained prevention measures. In Zango, the school collaborated with health workers to ensure everyone had the appropriate dose, whether the first, second, or booster. |

All United for Primary Education in rural communities! |
|
|
|
Final year students in long-term teaching practice from the ADPP Teacher Training School in Uíge have been running community preschool as part of the government’s “TUPPI” (All United for Primary Education) project. They received a visit from an assessor from the Ministry of Education, together with representatives of the Provincial Education, Health and Justice Departments, and Puri Administration. The Ministry was full of praise for the work being done. |

Strong support for quality education |
|
|
|
Dr Pacheco Francisco, Secretary of State for Pre-School and Primary Education, led the first quarterly coordination meeting of the project "Strengthening Municipal Education Systems to Ensure Quality Education for All Children," attended by the Provincial Departments of Education of Bié and Huambo, the Municipal Departments of Education of Cacuso (Malanje), Londuimbali (Huambo), Catabola (Bié), and Baía Farta (Benguela), and the municipal administrator of Cacuso. ADPP is helping to support municipalities, schools, teachers and communities to provide quality education for all children through teacher training, promotion of active learning, strong school-community collaboration and a focus on the importance of educating girls to better each child's learning. |

Education & Food Production |
|
Students at ADPP teacher training schools acquire many useful skills that complement pedagogical knowledge. Food production is one such skill, that helps improve the daily diet and enables the students to promote environmentally friendly agriculture during long-term teaching practice. At TTS ADPP Londuimbali, production from January to June was impressive, with 300 kg of maize, 239kg of beans and 20 kg of soya, plus large quantities of bananas and all kinds of vegetables, sufficient to accompany every meal. The students raise pigs, hens and ducks too. Next season will see a considerable increase in production thanks to abundant rainfall. |

The STEM Project kicked off the month of June with a mathematics competition and an exhibition of practical experiences. Students from Teacher Training Schools ADPP Luanda and Caxito participated alongside students from host school TTS Marconi. Students from EPP schools and pupils from primary schools involved in the project also took part, demonstrating their skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for these key science, math and technical subjects. Members of Luanda and Bengo Provincial Education Departments as well as partners were treated to a most interesting display. |

Nature field trips are more than just about studying plants and animals. On their nature trip this month, 8th Grade from EPP Caxito also studied how plastic is endangering life in the oceans, and they made an important contribution by cleaning the beaches in the commune of Barra do Dande. |
|

|
Zones of Pedagogical Influence (ZIP) |
|
|
|
Education benefits from experience sharing and exchanges of ideas, which take place when schools work in ZIPs throughout the country. Directors from the 45 schools in the local ZIP met at the Polytechnic ADPP Huambo to elect a school coordinator for the next five-year period. Also present were the municipal administrator, the municipal director of education, representative of the national police, the mayor, and parents. EPP Huambo gave a demonstration of the charcoal efficient stoves and briquettes being made and promoted by the school for the sake of the environment. Moreover, each guest received a tree sapling and everyone was encouraged to collect and plant seeds and grow trees. |

STEM Ready for school year 2022/2023 |
|
|
|
The STEM team, consisting of teachers from four teacher training schools in Luanda are looking forward to a well-deserved holiday after completing training, tests, experiments and production of the new manual for Module 3. All are aware of the responsibilities that lie ahead in the implementation of these experiences for students, pupils and teachers at participating schools in the academic year 2022/2023. Long live STEM Angola! |

Building week at all schools |
|
|
|
Teachers & students at all our schools spent a week doing maintenance, making repairs and generally improving the physical environment at their place of study during the month of July. Everyone benefits from these actions, that ensure optimum conditions for learning, provide an opportunity for gaining new skills, and promote team work to achieve goals. Students take these skills with them wherever they go. During teaching practice, they organise maintenance and even construction tasks at primary schools and in rural communities. |

Practical Aptitude Tests
A trio of students at the our Polytechnic in Benguela demonstrated their knowledge of their chosen profession and the results of their 9th Grade practical exam task at a Practical Aptitude Test in the presence of a jury, partners and family members. All 9th Graders at our polytechnics conclude their 3-year training with these oral exams.

Admission tests are taking place at all our schools for the school year starting in September. The tests are rigorous, in compliance with Ministry of Education directives. Here at TTS ADPP Uíge there were 130 candidates seeking one of the 70 places on the next team at the school. |
