Bid farewell to the old city office

Dear ,

At this week's Bennington City Council meeting, we reviewed the final plan for auctioning the old city office building at 15514 Warehouse Street. An open house was held last Saturday, and the auction will be held this Saturday, February 16, at 10 a.m. With 1,500 square feet of office or retail space in the heart of Bennington, this is a great opportunity for a small business. Know anyone who's interested? Check out the sale bill here.

You may have noticed the disappearance of two nearby homes, including the old "snack shack" at the corner of 156th and Warehouse streets. With the city's encouragement, the owner of those two dilapidated buildings sold them, and the new owner has demolished them. (Both were beyond repair.) These are all exciting redevelopment opportunities!

Because of the snow Monday evening and the absence of our city engineer and auditor, we postponed a discussion about roads funding and the presentation of the city's 2018 finances. We will revisit those items at the March 11 meeting. In other business:

  • Streets plan: We approved the One- and Six-Year Plan for street repairs and improvements. Since the last meeting, we added N. 4th Street. Let me know if you want more detail on this plan.
  • Police chief: An advisory committee of law enforcement officers has been reviewing applicants for the police chief position. That committee will screen candidates for the mayor, and the mayor will make a hiring recommendation to the City Council after interviews.
  • Scout project: Boy Scout Josh Lueders presented his proposed Eagle Scout project. He plans to build a trail kiosk near the pedestrian creek bridge that will display wayfinding and historical information. The Mayor and the Council encouraged him to proceed.

The complete meeting minutes will be posted here.

It looks like snow will keep our Public Works Department busy this weekend. I think they have been doing a great job this winter. If you have any snow removal issues, you can contact me or call the city office directly at (402) 238-2375.

Have a great weekend!
