Prognosticators expect a record-setting turnout in the 2024 presidential election. The polarized climate has people on edge, as does unsettling news across the globe.
Has all the attention, the nasty talk, and the fear-mongering caused you anxiety? Have you lost trust in the system?
We live in an increasingly dangerous world that is shrinking, seemingly by the day, with technological advances. I'm reminded of this when I field chats from distressed people anywhere in the world at the click of a button.
Whichever presidential candidate assumes power brings uncertainty for different reasons. And we tend to find comfort in what is predictable or what we can control. Right now we have neither predictability nor control.
Yet a peace that transcends the chaos comes from recognizing Who is in charge and trusting in His care and goodness. Yielding our powerless spirit to the All-powerful frees us.
He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 NIV). He also says, “Fear not, for I am with you. I will never leave you nor forsake you” (See Deuteronomy 31:6-8).
FDR famously said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”
And it seems fear is at the crux of our anxiety. But “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (II Timothy 1:7 NKJV).
If the noise surrounding the election becomes unbearable, shut it out. Go to the One who promises peace. Pour out your heart to Him in prayer. Worship Him and spend time with His people at church. Read His words of comfort in His love letter to you, the Bible. Seek shelter beneath His wings.
