World Backup Day: Coping with disasters

We are experiencing the Information Age, where everything we know is being stored through data on computers. Malicious individuals, collectives, or events will attempt to take these benefits away and reduce our sense of security and privacy. In a single stroke of a key, people could lose everything valuable to them. How can they recover?

Data breach potentially impacts 368,000 current, former Florida Virtual School students

Florida Virtual School (FLVS) has alerted students, parents, and alumni after a massive security breach affecting 350,000 or more of its students, teachers and parents statewide. The compromised data includes complete school records of students and teacher information including Social Security numbers. No financial information was involved. FLVS has contacted the FBI, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and an independent forensic cybersecurity firm to assist in their investigation. FLVS is offering one year of free identity protection services for those impacted.

Pennsylvania AG Sues Uber Over Massive Data Breach

Pennsylvania is seeking up to $13.5 million in damages from Uber after the ride-sharing platform suffered a data breach of 57 million driver and passenger data accounts worldwide. The company kept it secret after paying a $100,000 ransom. Instead of notifying impacted consumers of the breach within a reasonable amount of time, Uber hid the incident for over a year — and actually paid the hackers to delete the data and stay quiet!

3 Strategies every security team should have

For those who are unaware of the cyber-threats present all around us, many believe 2017 was a year that served as another wakeup call for what the digital world is up against! Others, who are already highly-aware of the threats we face, understand  that while some of these attacks and discoveries proved to be highly sophisticated, cyber-criminals will continue to do what they do best – go after the path of least resistance. After all the cybersecurity threats and events in the last 12 months, infosec teams should focus on these priorities as the craft strategies into the future:

  1. Patch Management
  2. Cloud Security
  3. Email Protection
