New season underway!

First day of Woodside Nippers

It was great to be back on the beach for our first day of Woodside Nippers at Secret Harbour SLSC. Thank you to all of our volunteers who made Sunday a success. Despite the conditions, it was a great first Nippers day!

Nipper Season Guide

We have put together a guide for all new and returning Nipper families. Please take the time to read this important information (link below) This guide can also be found under "Documents" in Team App.

Woodside Nipper rashies and sizing

If anyone finds they need a different size nippers rashie, you can visit the office during normal hours to swap out your rashie vest, or the office will also be open this Sunday from 8:30- 10am. Sizes range from 6-14 + S/M/L for bigger sizes/older kids.

No Nippers on Sunday 22nd November

Please note that Woodside Nippers is not running on Sunday 22nd November due to the Senior Carnival. We encourage Nipper families to come and check out the surf sports carnival and assist during the event if you can.

See you on the beach!

Woodside Nippers 2020/21 Season Guide

Age Group Roster

U14s on November 8th

U13s on November 14th

Every age group is rostered on for 2 weeks during the season to help with set up and pack down. Parents and Woodside Nippers will need to arrive at 7:30am to help set up the sign-in area and beach arenas for the morning activities. We also need 3-4 parents to help with the BBQ each week. There will always be an experienced club member on hand to guide you. Our beach set up/pack down coordinator is Lewis Harrison - thanks Lewis!

The roster for the season is on page 3 of the Woodside Nippers 2020/21 Season Guide.

Join a great team of Nipper Parents who provide essential Water Safety services every Sunday.

The NRC course is a great introduction to surf lifesaving and will qualify Nipper Parents/Guardians to perform water safety for Nipper water-based activities.

The NRC course is free for members and will cover surf awareness, recognising safe beach zones, aquatic rescues with rescue tube/contact tow, and Surf Lifesaving signals. Participants must be able to complete a 200m Ocean Swim in 6 minutes.

We need as many water safety assistants as possible to support every age group - please register via the office. More information and how to register are in the info sheet below.

**Requalifications: To maintain currency, members who hold an NRC will need to undergo an annual proficiency test. You can join the scheduled NRC course for this. If you are unavailable on November 14th, please contact Director of Education Derry Smith to make an alternate arrangement.

NRC Information Sheet

We are proud to be hosting the upcoming SLSWA Senior and Surf Boat Carnival right here at Secret Harbour SLSC on Sunday November 22nd!

We are calling on all members and families to support the event by helping with a range of tasks such as BBQ, water safety, first aid, set up/pack down, and general assistance throughout the day. Please view the roster below and contact Carolyn Wilson to let her know where you can help. (Carolyn's contact info is on the roster)

SHSLSC Competitors: Click here to enter.

**Please note that Woodside Nippers will not be running that day so we would encourage Nipper families to come and check out the surf sports carnival and assist during the event if you can.

Update from Club Captain

IRB Water Safety Roster & IRB Maintenance Session

A page has been added to the patrol roster for all IRB Drivers and Crew to fill shifts for the Woodside Nippers water safety on Sundays. If you all could put your names down on that roster, that would be great. There is also a spot that needs filling before our nippers take to the water this weekend, so if anyone is available to help out, please let me know and add your name to the roster.

I am also looking at holding an IRB Maintenance Session on the 4th of December to ensure our boats and engines are looked after properly and to teach the future drivers (our Crewies) everything they need to know about the boat and the engine. If you will be available to make that session, please let me know!

Long Service Awards

It is a tremendous honour to be awarded the Long Service Membership award at Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club as it requires 10 years of active service patrolling on our beaches.

This means making all patrol obligations for each season for a decade, consecutive or otherwise. I am excited to announce that seven members reached this colossal milestone this year: Vanessa Aikins, Daniel Andrew, Sarah Lowe, Lee McGovern, Lorraine Rule, Mark Thomas and Mark Turley.

So what does the recognition of Patrol Long Service Mean?

· You will be recognised at the next major Club function as a long Service member of SHSLSC;

· Your name will be proudly displayed on the Clubs Long Service Honours Board;

· You will have earnt the privilege of not having to patrol to compete;

· You will be excused patrol duties but we would like you to continue to patrol and mentor our membership, as we acknowledge your vast experience;

· You will be afforded Gym Membership if you so choose to take up this option;

· You will be afforded a reduced membership;

· You will have the same privileges around the club as other active members;

· Your Long Service Membership can be recognised on transferring clubs if that was to occur in the future.

A massive congratulations to the seven members who have now joined the ranks of the greats at our amazing club. Members such as you exemplify what dedication and perseverance look like. Thank you Lorry, Daniel, Mark Turley, Mark Thomas, Lee, Vanessa and Sarah for the years of service you have devoted to our club and we look forward to the years to come.

Gold medal wins for SHSLSC at Endurance Comp

Congratulations to all of our competitors at the SunSmart Endurance Championships at Sorrento on Saturday, October 31st!

Competitors from Secret Harbour put in an outstanding effort and included U13's Kyra Tierney, James Whelan, Jack Wicks, Flynn Senior (Nipper Gold, 2km beach run). U15's Ruby Moogan, Jed Moore & Joseph Tyrell competed in the 2km swim. Ruby unfortunately couldn't complete her other events due to injury (she's OK now). Jed and Joseph went on to do the 3.5km board race with Jed also completing a tough 4km beach run.

We had an amazing 3 gold medal wins with Kyra Tierney and James Whelan (U13) taking home the gold in the 2km beach run and Kyra winning the Nipper Gold Female Ironwoman Race.

Check out the latest issue (Nov 4) of the Sound Telegraph for an update on our competitors!

A special thank you to Jenny Whelan and Charlotte Moogan for taking up the sun shelters. This type of support for our club is greatly appreciated.

There is a role for everyone

As a volunteer-run organisation, we rely on the support of our members to run our club programs and activities. There are also many ways to get involved at the club without getting in the water!

You can join a committee, help with bbqs, beach set up on Sundays, becoming a patrolling member or getting your Nipper Rescue Certificate to do water safety and helping our Admin team in the office, to name a few.  If you have an idea of how you'd like to help but are unsure of how to go about it, please email Club Captain Jess Williams.

If you would like to gain work experience in a particular area of operating a small business, volunteering at the club is a great way to do this and we can provide a reference for you too.

We need every member to take on one activity; big, small or in between to run our club to its maximum potential.
