Easing into opening our office, June is Pride Month, Halloween!, & Welcome, New Board Member, and office holiday.
Light at the end of the tunnel? We are so ready! In fact, we did our first in-office event – a tech teach-in with the Coast Guard, on May 13, and were able to give everyone sufficient space to spend an hour with a volunteer. It sure felt good. The office is small, and we have been given some guidance that says we can have a 50% occupancy rate – we are still sorting out what that looks like, but watch for more in-office events and the beginnings of some in-person/Zoom blend classes.
June is Pride Month, and we are reaffirming our commitment to being a welcoming environment for our LGBTQ members. NEXT is part of the LGBTQ Partnership, a coalition of directors from a variety of organizations that serve older adults in San Francisco. When you join NEXT, we ask you a series of questions about your LGBT status. We do so because the City, and the State use that data to ensure that programs that serve Californians, and in our case, older adults, are also serving the LGBTQ community as well, and that this population is not being left behind when it comes to services and socialization. If you have suggestions for events or presentations that would be of value to our LGBTQ friends, please let us know.

Believe it or not, we are busy planning for our annual Halloween in the Village party! This year, Halloween falls on a Sunday, (October 31) and we will once again be live at the Italian Athletic Club with the super fun band, Hey Jude. Come sing along, dance along, buy raffle tickets, or find a treasure in our online auction. Tickets will go on sale in August, and sponsorships are available now. Bring some recognition and goodwill to your business or organization by becoming a sponsor, or if you’re a community member who wants to help us be of service to your neighbors and friends, please click the blue button below to learn more, or give me a call. We are also accepting raffle and online auction items – both are good ways for people to show their support and maybe win something along the way.

Office closed: May 28-31st. Memorial Day weekend. We have a number of members who served our Country, and we salute all of them.
The staff at NEXT Village will be taking a well-deserved break. We work very hard to bring quality programming and provide support to our community, and this will give us a chance to recharge a bit. If you need help from us, please make that request no later than Monday, May 24th if possible. Thank you and enjoy your holiday.

Welcome new board member, Dr. Nandini Joseph.
If you've attended any of our recent health presentations or read some
of our health-related articles in the newsletter, you may have "met"
Dr. Joseph already.
“I’m originally from Texas, but
have spent the last 15 years in the Bay Area with my family. I am a
physician in endocrinology and I recently completed my MPH (Master’s of
Public Health) at UC Berkeley."
"I joined NEXT Village SF because of its commitment to help members age in place. As a physician, I’ve seen how important community, support and education are to help us all live more healthy and independent lives. The NEXT Village supports its members in all these ways and is an amazing resource for many!"
NEXT is fortunate to have 13 outstanding board members. If you'd like to join them, please let us know.

Grateful.
Meet Shea!
Shea English has been delivering weekly meals and smiles to NEXT members since joining our volunteer team this year! She's also a Personal Stylist and Wardrobe Consultant - check out her website!: http://www.sheaenglish.com
Shea said, "Grateful is the word I would use to describe joining forces with NEXT Village SF to drop prepared meals to our community along with the help of my mother, Judy. It is something we look forward to weekly. Getting to know them over the last year has given me perhaps more joy than they even realize: the conversations, smiles and simple knowing they are doing ok. I look forward to my weekly routine and seeing my regulars!" 🥰
If you would like help from a cool volunteer like Shea, or would like to volunteer yourself, please contact Rachel: rachel@nextvillagesf.org, 415-574-0156

In
May, we had our first in-person event at our office! Volunteers from a
Coast Guard ship called "The Tern" answered member's technology
questions one-on-one. Their expertise and patience was appreciated by
all!

"Be Still, Breathe, and Smile—Mindful Meditation”
Many of you know Cat Hampton from Women's Conversation Group, Improv, or as a performer in many of our holiday shows. Cat will lead a weekly meditation class for NEXT Village & D2U called "Be Still, Breathe, and Smile—Mindful Meditation”. We’ll meet on Zoom every Friday morning for 45 minutes. The practice of meditation is a sure pathway to experiencing a deeper sense of peace in life, a renewed sense of well-being even in the midst of life’s myriad challenges, and a more expanded sense of compassion and connection with others. In this class we will be learning about and practicing various types of meditation techniques, including silent and guided meditation, movement and mantra meditation, mindful breathing, chanting, mudras, and more. Whether you are a first-time meditator or you are interested in deepening or transforming your daily practice, this weekly gathering is a safe way to explore and practice this ancient spiritual art of mindfulness. 911, What is your Emergency? / Behind the Scenes of 911
Have you wondered when you should really call 911? This will be an eye opening presentation to explore some of the mystery behind a 911 call and help to put your mind at ease so you feel more confident and better prepared in case of an unexpected medical emergency.
Hillarie Grenier has worked as a 911 operator, as an EMT (emergency medical technician) a volunteer firefighter, and now works for AMR managing the dispatch center (you probably see their ambulances regularly). She will share her experience to help us understand better what to expect if we are ever faced with a medical emergency, as well as some things we can do to be better prepared. Last Supper in Pompeii - A docent-led Virtual Tour
In AD 79, the Bay of Naples was rocked by the fiery eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii and nearby villages and farms were completely buried under pumice and hot ash, which killed thousands in the midst of their daily activities. The exhibition brings us back into this world by focusing on everyday life and especially on food and drink. Along with the pots, pans, and other paraphernalia in the distribution, preparing, and serving food, this exhibition includes glorious works of art, which reveal the splendor and luxury loved by the wealthy Romans who called Pompeii their home. Join a docent on zoom for a live, interactive virtual tour of highlights from the exhibition. This tour will be captioned. Other accommodation requests may be sent to access@famsf.org by June 1.
11:00 am: Docent Beth Beisecker will discuss highlights from the exhibition. This virtual "tour" will be captioned.
FREE Admission by Registration. To register click the link below.

Live & Learn: Fiduciary Presentation
Rebecca May. CA Department of Consumer Affairs What is the role of a Fiduciary? Why would one want to hire a professional fiduciary, what should you consider before hiring a professional fiduciary, what can a fiduciary do for you, what might it cost, and is it possible to petition the court to assign a fiduciary for someone? How are fiduciaries licensed? Hear from Rebecca May, from the CA licensing and enforcement body overseeing the profession. Their focus is on consumer protection, not advocating for professional fiduciaries. Outreach is one way that they educate the public on what to consider before hiring a professional fiduciary.

IrisVision Webinar - What You Wish You Knew About Vision Loss
IrisVision is a breakthrough, wearable, smart device that leverages the working areas of your eyes to immediately restore vision while giving you easy-to-use connectivity tools for communicating and social engagement. If you’re living with legal blindness or a low-vision condition, your world may extend only as far as a handheld magnifying glass.
IrisVision changes everything, opening your world visually and socially. See the smiling faces of your loved ones, read a recipe, stay on top of the news, take in a sunset, scan a grocery shelf, connect to your social media pages, share photos, or simply watch a movie on the couch with your family.
IrisVision’s founder, Frank Werblin, PhD, is a professor of neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley. Having discovered a number of cellular associations underlying visual information processing in the retina, he had been working on retinal chip implants to help the blind see when he sought a solution that was less invasive and more affordable: a tool accessible for the wider low-vision community.
