Today's Bible Study Lesson
“David Dances Before the Ark”
\
Aim: Explore
David’s
joy and Michal’s contempt for him;
Appreciate
many
ways to celebrate God’s presence, and
Plan
celebrations
that honor God through praise and worship.
Background: 2
Samuel
6
Bible Lesson:
2
Samuel
6:1-5,
14-19
Memory
Verses:
“And
David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all
manner of [instruments made of] fir wood, even on harps, and on
psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.” 2
Samuel
6:5 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
2
Samuel Chapter 6 records King David’s efforts to bring the Ark of
the Covenant
(also, called the Ark of Testimony)
to Jerusalem, the Jewish political capital and worship center. The
Ark of the Covenant represented the presence of God in Jewish
worship. It was a
box
made of shittum
wood overlayed with gold. The mercy seat was on its top between two
cherubims. There were two rings on each side of the Ark of Covenant
to accommodate poles for transportation by the Levites. All of these
features
of the ark were overlayed with gold including the poles. (Exodus
25:10-15)
Inside
the Ark were the Tablets of the Law given to Moses by God, Aaron’s
budding staff, and some of the manna given by God to Hebrews in the
wilderness. The Ark was sacred and
it was
carried by the Levites when entering battle, when traveling in the
wilderness, and it was placed in the Holy of Holies Section of the
Tabernacle.
-
After
King David had established Jerusalem as the national capital, he
desired to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. The
Philistines captured the Ark during
a battle
and kept it for seven
months.
They
experienced death
and destruction
while
it was
in their
possession
so
they returned it quickly to the Hebrew people. (1
Samuel 5:1-12)
After
seventy years of the Ark’s displacement, David made elaborate
plans to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. A host of 30,000 accompanied
King David as he journeyed to retrieve the Ark. A new cart was
brought
to transport it
to Jerusalem.
Many musicians were present for the occasion with instruments of fir
wood, harps, timbrels, cornets, cymbals, etc. As
they proceed toward Jerusalem the oxen pulling
the cart
stumbled and the Ark tipped on the cart and Uzzah, a servant,
reached out and touched the Ark to steady it. He was instantly smote
by God and died beside the Ark. Only
the
Levites
were
authorized
to touch the Ark. This tragedy caused
King David to be upset
with
God
and the project of returning the Ark was abandoned. The Ark was
moved
to
the house of Obed-edom for safekeeping.
-
In
the 2 Samuel 6:11-13, we learn that the Ark remained with Obed-edom
for three months. During this time, he and his household were
greatly blessed by God. King David heard of these blessings and he
decided to once
again to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. His first attempt failed
because God’s instructions for transporting the Ark were not
followed. God’s instruction required
the Ark to be carried with the poles on the shoulders of the
Levites. This time King David approached the movement of the Ark
obediently following God’s instructions. King
David even put aside his royal robe and dawned a linen ephod, a
priestly garment for the occasion.
-
As
King David and the entourage journeyed from Obed-edom’s house with
the Ark, they offered sacrifices and rejoiced along the way to
Jerusalem. As
the people and the Ark entered the City of David, King David’s
wife, Michal (Saul’s daughter) saw her husband, the King, leaping
and dancing with all his might before the Lord. She
despised or was greatly displeased with what she saw. She did not
possess
the deep appreciation for the return of the
Ark
of the
Covenant
as exhibited by King David and the Jewish people. Perhaps, she had
not embraced King David’s Jewish faith and
clung to the pagan gods of her ancestors.
-
King
David’s plan for the Ark included a special tent which was
prepared in the city which is where it was placed. King David
offered burnt and peace offerings to
the Lord
and blessed the people in the Name of the Lord. As
part of the celebration of the return of the Ark, King David gave
everyone, men and women, a cake
of bread, a nice
piece of meat, and
some wine to take home. The people departed happily
to
their respective
homes
with their carryouts from the celebration.
Take
Aways:
-
We
must recognize that because our blessings from God are as
unique as is our personal relationship with Him;
therefore,
our
expression of praise and worship is uniquely our own.
-
We
must recognize and respect the various forms of praise and worship
of others even
if they express
themselves in ways different than ourselves.
-
We
should not let others dictate or control how we praise and worship
God because it comes from our own unique relationship and experience
with God.
