In 1886, Samuel Gompers set up the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in America. The AFL wanted private companies to succeed, and for workers in those companies to share in that success. Communists and socialists wanted to overthrow that system, and have labor unions run the government and all major businesses. During May of that year, communists and socialists (Until 1919, those words were used interchangeably) provoked deadly riots in Chicago. Later, they created their major worldwide holiday on May First to show support for those riots and socialist and communist movements around the world. American labor unions rejected that holiday and created Labor Day instead. Labor Day celebrated the ability of American workers to enjoy a long three day late summer weekend with their families.
