March is Women's History Month!
From the Director
There are so many interesting and accomplished women in NEXT Village – members, volunteers, donors…and board members! We would like to single out one board member in particular: Co-founder and board chair, Janet Crane. During our Spring Fling party, we will be honoring Janet for her strong work in the development and stewardship of NEXT. She’ll be in good company that evening with fans like YOU, The Honorable David Chiu, and representatives from Supervisors Peskin and Stefani.
Not only is Janet the co-founder of NEXT along with her friend, the late Jonee Levy, she is an architect at Freebairn-Smith & Crane; a field she has worked in since 1973 with her partner, Rod Freebairn-Smith. To this day, if you give her a piece of paper with photos of random pieces of furniture, she will have that room measured and organized to scale within an inch of its life. She also serves as President of the Organization of Woman Architects and Design Professionals.
Harvey Hacker says: “I met Janet in 1969 when, I believe, she was still an architectural student: smart, funny, and totally cute. Fifty-three years later, none of that has changed. Memories include the wide variety and ambition of her work in architecture, including retail stores, Ghirardelli Square oversight, and pro bono design of North Beach Citizens facility; her distinguished teaching career at UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design; her co-founding NEXT Village SF and helping to see it through difficult early years; and her stunning channeling of Elizabeth II at the North Beach Citizens dinner in her (Janet’s, not the Queen’s) honor".
Janet is notoriously famous for:
- A huge a collection of snow globes, gathered from around the world
- Wearing blinking Christmas lights around her neck at Christmas time
- Walking or taking public transportation everywhere
- Her love of great music and dancing at any opportunity; often while wearing unique and glitzy accoutrements
- Shopping for cool clothes. She is a maven of thrift & consignment stores with her artistic eye.
- Janet is a loving caregiver for every one of her friends, and is famous for Lending a helping hand to neighbors and NEXT Village members
Join us on March 25th to give her a well-deserved high-five, or send your regards to her via info@nextvillagesf.org

Camille's Volunteer Corner
Meet Charlotte!
I joined NEXT Village because I love getting to know my community and the opportunity to help where I can. My grandparents live in France, which has been hard for me to miss out on spending time with them. Meeting the NEXT Villages members has allowed me to help and connect in person, in a way I can’t with my grandparents right now. I find it rewarding and fulfilling when I'm able to make members smile and brighten their day a little. Plus, they always have some exciting stories to share! Thank you all for bringing a smile to my face!
Charlotte, thank you for volunteering your time and going above and beyond! If a NEXT Village volunteer put a smile on your face or went above & beyond, feel free to let us know and we'll pass it on!
Be well - Camille. 415-574-0156, Camille@nextvillagesf.org

Scam of the Month
Beware of fraudulent solicitation letters warning you that your Medicare plan is changing. It is not on official letterhead and contains grammatical and punctuation errors and is poorly formatted. There is also no date on it. The letter states that you may pay little or nothing for Dental Care - which is patently false. Medicare doesn’t cover Dental Care.
Feel free to ask us if you get a suspicious letter.
