Visiting friend Mary and I kind of got skunked on our Great Backyard Bird Count last weekend. There was a good bit of wind when we were out and winged creatures were tucked into safe spaces.
However, we did know (and so did you) that the GBBC was begun by National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in 1998. From the website, you will find that Colombian counters reported the largest number of different species at 1,265! I find it astonishing that the US sent in the most number of checklists by FAR but really didn't do all that well in diversity of species.
As we explore additional weeks devoted to living things, we find ourselves this week in the midst of National Invasive Species Awareness Week, a great time to revisit Dr. Carolyn Sears' blog posts from April 2022 about invasive management in your own world. What does Dr. Sears say is the mantra of invasive management?
