The first person to visit every country in the world - Rauli Virtanen

Meet Rauli Virtanen, the first person to visit every country in the world.

For the past 50 years, Rauli has distinguished himself as a renowned journalist specialising in conflict zones. His work uncovers the darker facets of world history, offering invaluable perspectives often missing from mainstream narratives.

His journey goes beyond merely racking up passport stamps. He delves deep into the darkest corners of human experience, returning with stories that will challenge your perspectives and inspire you to think differently.

Q: How did you transition from general reporting to war reporting?

A: Well, at first, after the School of Social Sciences, I was more of a general reporter, but I was following Latin America, that was my first ‘foreign beat’. It was an interesting time, there were guerrillas and there was Che Guevara, and all that.

Read the full interview with Rauli here.

DARE region list

Those of you with a keen eye may have noticed a change in our list names.

Our list of 1301 Many Quirky Places (M@P) has been renamed DARE - Distinctive Alternative Remote Extremes. We believe the name DARE exemplifies the quality of this list better than any other name.

We will focus more on DARE and its upcoming expansion as of October. Why not take this opportunity to update your DARE regions visited?

Travel Book Nominees

Continuing with our special spotlight on the nominees for our inaugural 2023 Award for Best Travel Book/Author, we present our final duo, both masters of their craft, pushing boundaries and redefining the essence of travel.

The final two books/authors to be nominated are:

LEFT. Rolf Potts. The Vagabond's Way

In 'The Vagabond’s Way,' Rolf Potts explores the deeper meaning behind travel. Instead of just destinations, he delves into the transformative emotions and thoughts that journeys evoke. Using daily reflections and insights from diverse thinkers, he paints a philosophical picture of the traveler's mindset. This book isn't just about places—it's about understanding and cherishing every step of the journey, whether you're exploring new terrains or dreaming from home.

RIGHT. Kate Rawles. The Life Cycle

In "The Life Cycle," eco-adventurer Kate Rawles narrates her gripping 13-month journey, cycling 8,000 miles down the Andes on a bamboo bicycle she crafted herself. Her journey, spanning the Pacific coast to rainforests, reveals environmental challenges and the heroes combating them. Merging her passion for cycling with environmental philosophy, Rawles delivers a poignant call for nature's protection.
